The first episode of Coding History: 3D from Mode7 to DOOM is live now! It explains how to rotate points in 2D space and why the rotation formula so often used in game development is the way it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JC5IMfK7Yfw

Moved the hacked PS1 mini (it has like 80+ games on it now thanks to Autobleem, the most important of them being Diablo) to the living room to start up a new Diablo run. I beat it two years ago in September and I started my run(s) in August 2021. Something about August and fall, I guess. Last time, I tried a sorcerer but struggled til I switched to fighter, which I beat it with. This time, I'm trying a rogue. Never tried rogue before. Should be wild. Time for tons of saving and leaving all my gear on the ground in town! 🤣
And there we go. Briley Witch Chronicles 2 has been released and we managed to get started. Players of part 1 will feel right at home. It obviously uses the same game engine, some music and graphics changed, but the great UI stayed mostly the same. So no great learning curve there. The story picks up right before some festivities in Maepole village. #brileywitch#commodore#c64#retrogaming
Portal is a 1986 game by Activision. It's a cyberpunk thriller / playable novel. You return from a 100 year exploration trip through the galaxy to find the Earth deserted and desolate. You log onto Worldnet to connect to Homer, the AI, to figure out what happened to humanity. #commodore#c64#InteractiveFiction#retrogaming
When I was a youngster in the late 1980s, I formed an Amiga game dev team with 2 friends.
Before making games, we started by trying to sell game music that used minimal RAM, made with our music editor SIDmon.
To promote our game music, this energetic music module was composed by our musician Ramon Braumuller. The file, including tiny sampled sounds, is only 22 kilobytes.
The card that started it all. And by it I mean the retro soundcard revival. This one was reverse engineered by @tubetime and it still features the illegitimate AdLib logo. I assembled it myself and even drilled holes for the volume control and headphone jack. #retrocomputing#retrogaming#adlib
Yearly reminder to charge all your portables, controllers, and anything with an internal battery at least once a year, or better yet, every 6 months.
This way you lower the risk of the batteries going bad and starting to bloat.
I had this happen with 4 PSP ones a couple of years ago, so I started taking precautions.
Excuse the mess, as this is the only place where I have more than a dozen outlets in the same spot. :blobcatscared:
Anyone #RetroGaming anything good at the moment? I'm still on my PSP kick playing MGS Peace Walker which I think is going to keep me busy for a while. Especially as I'm not great at it 😶.
So happy I picked up a PSP again though. Such a fun console. I maaayyy have also bought Silent Hill Origins. I think that's probably all the games that I definitely want for it, but any suggestions of hidden gems that I should look out for?
I've learned to lower my expectations with the Anbernic RG35XX when it comes to playing PICO-8 and TIC-80 games. Lots of them are fine, but some either run super-slow, or get errors when they run.
The ones that do work definitely work well, so I just need to focus on those.
(To be fair I didn't even know about PICO-8 or TIC-80 when I got it, so those are all just bonus games.)
I've released the second episode of Coding History! This episode teaches the basics of 3D, and shows that anyone can build their own basic 3D engine armed only with simple concepts and a little bit of math: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxMYroGay8c

HARD OFF is my favorite store ever. It’s a Japanese chain of tech thrift stores that will buy your junk and resell it. There’s also OFF HOUSE (clothes/household items), the confusingly unrelated BOOK OFF (used books, games and other media), LIQUOR OFF, etc
I’ll start off by posting some overview photos of what kind of stuff you can find there, and then start following up whenever I find something interesting
The #Miyoo Mini Plus is on sale on AliExpress alongside a bunch of other retro handhelds from #Anbernic and the like. So it might be a good time to grab one :P
Ultima Underworld related: while searching for the Sound Blaster, I also found a childhood save disk I made to preserve my "Real Tough Mage with lots of stuff", and a set of Elder Futhark runes I begged my parents to buy for me because I thought they were the ones from Ultima Underworld. (The seller was a marketplace fortune-teller, and she was bemused but delighted to see a tiny child so excited by a set of runes. If only she knew.)
I'm too scared to try the disk to see if it's corrupted... my younger self would have been so upset!
Still have no idea how to get followers on #mastodon. Teach me your ways! Follow me if you like #retrogaming, #80s / #90s#nostalgia, #tech / #cyber related stuff, and #dog pics! Keep me away from Twitter, I beg of you.
