Moved the hacked PS1 mini (it has like 80+ games on it now thanks to Autobleem, the most important of them being Diablo) to the living room to start up a new Diablo run. I beat it two years ago in September and I started my run(s) in August 2021. Something about August and fall, I guess. Last time, I tried a sorcerer but struggled til I switched to fighter, which I beat it with. This time, I'm trying a rogue. Never tried rogue before. Should be wild. Time for tons of saving and leaving all my gear on the ground in town! 🤣
@benjamin heres the whole thread- it was a blast. I documented here and there.. What a game. 60 some days ago. With my super limited time, I beat it in a month! 🤣
Update - I played a little bit yesterday and today, my rogue Alathra is now level 5. Cleared out floors 1 and 2 except for the butcher, trying to get a little more experience down on floor 3 here etc before I tackle him.
It's SO much fun (I always have to speed it up though, the regular walk is so slow -- there's a tip for ya, as long as you can deal with slightly faster monsters. It's a game changer for me).
It's just a thrill every time I play this game. I always forget how much I love its AMAZING soundtrack and sound effects. I remember first seeing it at my friends house when it first came out, and I've been hooked ever since.
@jake4480 I remember on the later floors (12+ I think) there were always these Succubus type enemies that shot missiles and ran away if you came close. I eventually had to cheat to beat the game.
btw what effect does your class have, besides initial stats/equipment? I don't remember at all if the Rogue was better with a bow, or if it was only a matter of putting points into the right stats...
@spinning_bird those succubi are SO annoying haha. They were tough with fighter. All 3 classes really have their strengths since rogue starts with bow, but to get that dex and str up is super important, I know they can be great at spells too. Fighter is mostly strength. Sorcerer I hear you have to build into a mana chugging machine, which I wasn't able to do, I couldn't beat the butcher with him, I hear you wanna find a spot to shoot him with a grated opening and closing yourself in a room with him outside? The proc gen is pretty cool with the levels but I'm not even seeing a good place to do it on this run 🤣 loot is kinda sparse at first too and to build up definitely takes a bit.
@spinning_bird@jake4480 Better archers and more access to sorcery than fighters but not as much as sorcerers. Also can find hidden items, doors, and traps.
@jake4480 I managed to luck out years ago and bought the soundtrack. The same composer wrote the soundtrack for Torchlight and I bought that too. I keep them in my music rotation.
@cynical13 woww that's a good point, I need to grab this soundtrack haha. And I didn't know that but I should've figured about Torchlight, which is a game I really love too. I've played all 3 now!
@brettmn 🤣 he straight up killed me a few minutes ago. I've died several times now but the best part of Diablo 1 is saving anywhere and being able to leave stuff in town. Damn butcher. I need to be stronger haha
@brettmn totally. I guess they changed that in II to just in town but then when you do all the monsters reset to be more fair or something? Which bugs me. Today, I saved 3 times through a fight with those little stupid 4 legged creatures, you try to make a choke point but they slip around and surround you like jerks. With 1, you can really pick and choose your own way. I've skipped beating the 2 big boss battles so far because I'm trying to get my character stronger. I saw you can save the GAME and you can also save the CHARACTER, so I'm doing both this time, in case I hit a wall where I keep dying, and I believe you can reset the game's monsters (strategically is cool) so you can build up some more experience that way. Ah, Diablo. 🥰
@brettmn oh and as for IV- I did play the beta with a barb and a necro, the graphics are so beautiful. But yeah from 2 and on, Blizzard's focus on certain quests in order, too linear. I get it, the story. I dig it. Maybe I want a game like Diablo or Torchlight that doesn't have/need much of a story, just for dungeon crawlin. That's why I love traditional roguelikes. And the battle pass stuff.. It's exhausting. They always push coop. I'm not into it. My friends always ask me to and I just don't have a lot of time. I gotta squeeze it in. I also don't like big boss battles in games, I play normal, not hardcore. And I even played a bunch of Immortal, the mobile one. It's fun to a point. But then it's a drag. Certain quests I don't like 😂 Don't know if you saw, since the console versions of IV can do couch co-op, my wife will try Diablo for the first time when I get IV! I'm so psyched to play with her. She's so good at games. She's playing a Wii U in bed next to me right now 😂🤣
Alathra's now level 16 and I'm starting in on floor 9, which is of course where that difficulty ramps up! However, I just went back to kill the Butcher and now I'm gonna take out Leoric. The Butcher was SO easy to take out with a level 16 rogue 🤣 I figure Leoric will be too. Diablo tip - wait to kill these two til later, when you're stronger! 🔥
@DanielTuttle hahaa yes! I got and modded the PS1 mini basically just for it. 🤣 Beat it a couple years back with warrior but now doing a rogue run, never done one!
@jake4480 Go get him! Btw, you can kill Leoric early and efficiently with Holy Bolt, as he takes double damage from it and it makes short work of him ;)
@dabbling_duck oh wow good to know - she's level 3 charged bolt which is pretty similar right? I do think that helped! And I got him fast! He was super easy. I don't even think I took damage in that whole area 🤣 So weird. It'll straight up slaughter you sometimes if you're doing it in its intended order as you're going down! Pretty wild. I did die pretty fast at floor 9. The key for me is always going pretty slow (even though I speed up the walk) and making sure they don't surround/gang up. Love those choke points. And rogues, wow the distance helps. She's has level 2 inferno too which I really love. Threw that one on the Butcher as soon as I opened the door, which is another trick I heard about.
@jake4480 Holy Bolt is unique in that it does double damage to undead - and I think it also works on Diablo himself - and, in multiplayer, actually heals other players when you shoot them (which is very silly but cool.) It pretty reliably drops as a spellbook early on, but another tactic is just to grab a staff of Holy Bolt from Adria and really let Leo have it.
Diablo is funny in that 90% of enemies will give you no trouble as you go, and all the strategy goes into dealing with that vicious last 10%. It can make it feel like you're running into a series of roadblocks when really the game is just inconsistent about when you need to swap from "kill 'em all" tactics to "time for devious tricks!"
@jake4480 (oh, and it goes without saying that the Caves and Hell are definitely where it tips more into the devious tricks side of things! if you can get access to the Golem spell before Hell, it is very nice to have a tank)

25 years later and I still literally hear this quote, word for word, in my head. He's definitely on par with Diablo as far as the game's encounters go.

@jake4480 My Diablo discs are also a fun memory of the time I used their big boxes (I had two copies) as emergency bedding for two ducklings. I really didn't think about the whole "collector's value" thing at the time, but there's something very wholesome about their fate. I feel like that's the truest way to defeat the Lord of Terror - with happy warm ducklings.
Well, I kept hitting a wall at floor 9 in my PS1 mini Diablo run, so I just saved my character and restarted the whole game to respawn monsters. Had to sell my extra stuff and they took the special stuff (Arkaines Valor, etc) but I bought a new helmet and armor and now maybe I can get a little bump before trying floor 9 again. Argh!
Still working my way back down to floor 9, gradually, just hangin out a little, grabbing up good gear. Got a better bow.
Every time I come back to town to sell stuff, I feel Griswold eyeing my badass backup axe, the unique and indestructible Wicked Axe, (that I'm keeping to thrash those jerks up close that instantly surround you on floor 9).
Finally making some damn progress on level 9 in Diablo with my rogue run.
A big key for the rogue here is firing arrows toward where you know the monsters are (once you've died from them enough times to learn, ffs) to taunt them to come over near one of these wood enclosures with the door.
Then, you run inside, close the door, and fire out, chugging health potions. It works. They run over fast and want to surround you. My rogue Alathra is level 18 now, and pretty tough (Arkaines Valor etc) but if the monsters surround you on floor 9, they'll just kill you over and over. You can't even chug potions fast enough.
So I fully filled my inventory with health potions, had a town portal ready to go, kept saving every time I killed a few more, and I think I'm finally getting somewhere now.
I mean, I kept dying here a LOT. Was even trying Stone Curse, melee weapons, anything. It was brutal. Maybe now I can progress some more.
Down in level 13 (and Alathra is now level 20). Was thankfully able to skip a lot of level 11, as those damn demons there kept surrounding me and killing me- but the succubi and other demons aren't too bad now since I found this BADASS bow that adds 101% damage. Almost breezing through level 13. Only a couple more to go!
@jake4480 oh that's fantastic. I modded my original psx from childhood with a PSIO and then ripped all my old games to SD card. It's heaven. I love when you can do new stuff with the old stuff. Are you a jrpg fan?
@jake4480 They’re both great. I think Xenogears is the greatest meditation on the Freudian super ego with giant Mech battles i’ve ever seen. If you have the patience for them they are well worth the time.
@rtw oh wow I don't know that there's many on there 🤣 Diablo might come closest. But there's tons of amazing shooters on it- which was the other reason I wanted it. Dodonpachi, Airgrave, Harmful Park, Sexy Parodius - SO many!
@jake4480 oh I'm a schmup guy for sure. I love dodonpachi with my entire being. I need to try harmful park too. I own the plates from an ikaruga cabinet. One day I'll go to Galloping Ghost here in Chicago and play schmups all day.
Killed Lazarus, and I'm at the end - exactly 30 days after starting my run as Alathra the rogue! I like to take it fairly slow, and I have. Now for the big demon himself. I suspect I won't have too much trouble - Lazarus is usually tougher and he was pretty much a breeze. Rogue arrows ftw! Find or buy a good bow!
Beat Diablo as a level 25 rogue today on 9/7/2023 - 30 days after starting it. (After the quick cinematic at the end, it takes you back to this intro screen).
@Englebert3rd@dabbling_duck@Vyothric@ellestad it really is! Modding it to add games was so easy - Autobleem is a breeze. It has 80+ games on it now. Some amazing shooters and a couple other platformers I need to try to get somewhere in- but who am I kidding. It's mostly a portable Diablo machine. hahaha
@jake4480 Rogues are more beginner-friendly than the other two classes. You are kind of squishy, but you can kite a lot of mobs into doorways, which makes the last half of the game more enjoyable. If you get trapped between mons though… Good luck and have fun, that game is amazing!
@chrisn heck yeah! Oh yeah choke points were my friend even with a warrior. I love how fast and accurately she shoots! I haven't even come close to dying yet, those ranged attacks are so awesome.
@jake4480 The trick with the Sorcerer is just to dump near-everything into mana and max out Mana Shield to become a tank mage/death cannon, which is very meta-gamey and also kinda breaks the game after a certain point (you end up only caring about one resource pool, and you're constantly refilling your inventory with mana potions because they are your everything.) Rogue is IMHO the most fun class because she's the hybrid: her animation speeds are good across the board, allowing her to toe-to-toe and cast spells to a respectable degree, but then her bow attack speed is ridiculous if you go down that conventional route.
@dabbling_duck awesome. Really good to know - I'm doing rogue and she's already level 3 - yeah her bow skills are AMAZING, I was even already able to buy a stronger bow. I always have to run the game at higher speed, the walks are WAY too slow 😂 I have the old guide book for it, I always find them at thrift stores and can't resist grabbing them 🤣 I like knowing what all the shrines do.. and their tip for killing the butcher with rogue is genius, just closing yourself in a room with grated openings and firing out. With the fighter I was strong enough to stand there and just hack at him. Butcher killed sorcerer instantly though. So tough. Sorc just isn't that strong early game, even if you can make him a mana chuggin maniac later 🤣
@jake4480 Sorcerer strategy for the Butcher is the same as the Rogue, you just bring more mana potions and you make very sure you don't get stunlocked before you get behind cover ;) Firebolt still goes through grates!
Speaking of which, don't forget that the rogue can still use those magical projectiles too - don't let that blue orb go to waste. Holy Bolt especially will be very helpful in the early stages!

I've tried most. Many I am NOT good at 🤣😂🤣 some surprises. Kyuin, Sexy Parodius and Harmful Park I like a LOT. Beat DoDonpachi on it with a trillion continues. 🤣
@ellestad it's SO good. Wish they'd remaster it like they did with II, just to get some of the amazing new graphics on it. The graphics of IV on I would be wild.
