The #Windows11 era:
We decided to ruin our image and any reputation we had as an industry standard operating system in the name of innovating with #AI and "changing the way you compute" (or something like that) #Windows#Microsoft#copilot#recall
Heaven for domestic abuse: a new spywaretool just up for grabs. It's like having Pegasus at home. What could possibly go wrong? Microsoft knows most families share their accounts or at least can easily log into eachothers accounts. They just choose to ignore it.
Microsoft #Copilot+ Recall feature 'privacy nightmare'.
The UK data watchdog says it is "making enquiries with Microsoft" over a new feature that can take screenshots of your laptop every few seconds.
#Microsoft says #Recall, which will store encrypted snapshots locally on your computer, is exclusive to its forthcoming Copilot+ PCs. #news
Time, use and practice are key to switching OSes, platforms and apps: you get comfortable with what you use. A good start to moving away from Microsoft Windows might be to install Libre Office on Windows, and start learning to use that for your daily word processing, presentations and spreadsheets. Take some steps with open source software before you even have to tackle a new operating system. #floss#foss#freesoftware#recall#quitwindows#quitmicrosoft
Since Microsoft announced their latest spyware, sorry, #ReCall, People want to jump ship to #Linux so I'm gonna give the community some solid advice. The biggest hurtle new users will have to deal with is the community because, to be honest, they are extremely obnoxious FOSS Bros that can't stand newbies or Windows users or non technical people in general, but here's your chance! Here's a chance to really guide people, not badger them into picking Linux just because.
Don't tell a new person to Google the term. Give them a video, a book, a tutorial, something to help them along. Think it's hand holding? Tough luck.
Don't ask them to register to a forum and provide feedback. Offer to give feedback on their behalf.
As for any Disabled person in your life? Just don't recommend Linux yet at all. It's still not ready for non technical Disabled people. Just no! No!
I wrote, briefly, about that at this link, but really, I haven't even scratched the surface yet as to issues with Linux adoption for Disabled users. I run Linux on a VM. I Debloated my own windows, so I stick with that. Just listen to the Disabled community without telling them they don't know why Microsoft is shit. Listen, and then code based on their answers. https://tweesecake.social/@weirdwriter/112481584085153619#Microsoft
Glad I switched, fully, to #Linux a few months ago. I'm not a programmer or techie, and struggled with Linux in the past, but compared to a decade ago, the installation was really easy & it the user interface has improved dramatically.
I have been hearing about this type of service being in the works for years. The “productivity pundits” have been discussing it quite a bit on their podcasts, so yeah... someone was thinking to basically record everything into a massive “browser history” equivalent for your life.
They also mentioned wearing body cams to take photos with a similar frequency, so maybe that Humane AI pin will get a second life as your personal surveillance cam :)
#Microsoft naming their embedded spyware after the process of removing a dangerous product from the marketplace makes perfect sense. #KnowThyself#Recall
Fediverse, hear my plea. I have an HP Omen 15 and was thinking on switching to #Linux due to the progressive enshittification of windows and the #recall garbage. I know Laptops are tricky. What Distro would you recommend? Would Linux Mint fit the bill? I'm more of a KDE/Cinnamon person that a Gnome person FYI
Holy mother of fuck, #Microsoft. Now I understand why everyone’s suddenly talking about Linux in my feed.
What. Could. Possibly. Go. Wrong?
Even if Copilot Recall AI were 100% safe, complete recall is not what your average person needs. People are drowning in data. If anything people need to forget more of the garbage they're constantly accumulating. Having complete recall is almost as bad as having none at all.
Ask someone who's always taking smartphone photos to show you their most cherished photo from the past year. Few will be able to do it because they spend all their time taking ever more photos instead of editing their existing catalog to prune out things that don't really matter.
We all know that this new Windows #recall feature is a concern, but we also all know it's going to be hugely popular right?
Because the flip-side of the coin for "domestic abuser surveillance" is parental surveillance. Parents trying to figure out how to raise their kids safely in the digital age will gobble up the ability to check on what their young ones are doing online when they're not around.
Any Windows users wanting to switch to Linux due to the new Windows Recall security nightmare, hit me up if you need any newbie help getting setup with Linux.
I was triggered at first as well, but after giving it more thought, I agree with Redmond.
#Microsoft#Recall rightfully CANNOT blur or encrypt your passwords because doing so would require that Microsoft be a content moderator, returning your data to their Seattle mothership in order to do so.
That is a level of surveillance no one should be comfortable with.
Then again, you have given #Google 20 years access to your email inbox, so...
So here's the thing with #Microsoft's new #Recall feature:
It's not about Microsoft now suddenly spying on you. They can probably already do that if they want in a much easier way without you knowing.
So please be more realistic!
The far more severe #privacy concern in the age of #remote work is when person A shares their screen and person B having Recall enabled, thereby "recalling" the other person's screen without person A knowing.
Completely nuts....
Microsoft CEO revealed that Windows PCs will have an AI photographic memory feature called “Recall,” which will take constant screenshots of everything you do #microsoft#recall#privacy#security
For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.
From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."
Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.
