The world's first underground #railway the Metropolitan, opened between Paddington and Farringdon in 1863, with Baker Street being a major intermediate station. The platforms just visible in the background beyond the gates and tiled columns, are the originals of 1863.
On Thursday I was pleased to be at the launch of the UK Railway Industry Association's much-needed strategy for cost reduction and decarbonisation of the UK rail network. The strategy would deliver a sustainable and affordable railway and support the UK rolling stock market at a critical time, by delivering new low-carbon trains and further electrification of passenger and freight services.
