Are there any #opensource alternatives or #privacy respecting apps similar to #Pocket? I want a reader where I can save webpages to read later and possibly organise my bookmarks better. Most of my bookmarks are articles and documentation.
Hitting rock bottom on my search for #macOS and #iOS bookmark management apps. I’d like to get off #Pinboard and #Pocket, but the options I’ve tried either have broken import functionality or perform poorly with tens of thousands of bookmarks.
I've heard conflicting stuff on the Analogue Pocket:
Can I savestate in Pokemon games (I'm playing Crystal) or will it only save 1 box of pokemon?
My save batteries are all dead on GB, so I'm trying to play 'em with savestates instead.
I'll probably get them fixed some time, but I'll probably have to find a local guy with the know-how. I don't have the tools or experience and don't want to wreck my real carts.
So, Pocket, the article-archival tool that keeps getting worse the more you use it, has just become immeasurably worse.
I've reverted from version 8.6.x to no, not 8.5, not 8.4, not 8.2, but 8.1.1.0 from freaking February of this year to revert these completely fucking brain-dead changes.
A "page flip" mode, which though itself hugely flawed, is better than scrolling through articles, especially on e-ink devices.
The ability to view all articles either in the (hugely preferable, very useful) #ReadabilityJS view, or in-app in a "web view". The latter now revert to your device's default Web Browser app on mobile devices.
The problem with that latter is that the task of annotating and tagging articles (my principle remaining justification for Pocket) is made vastly more tedious --- and it's already more than adequately tedious in previous Pocket versions. To the point it's not even worthwhile.
Fortunately, I was able to hunt down a prior version of the app (using the APKMirror app), and I will not be upgrading Pocket beyond the most recent version I can find which still supports both Page Flip and Web View modes, as noted above 8.1.1. from 17 February 2023. (Few if any of Pocket's "improvements" over the past five years have had any value to me whatsoever, so this is little loss.)
There is of course a Relevant xkcd: "Software Updates":
I would so like to see a useful document-management solution for tablets and e-ink devices with the ability to managed both offline and online (Web-based) content.
Boosts and re-sharing this on other platforms is strongly encouraged.
Edits: I'm updating this toot as I'm finding out more. In particular, what version(s) of Pocket are NOT affected by these changes is not yet clear.
I HATE this business model, but I do like the analogue pocket. Went and got a backup plus it's a nice color.
Would have preferred the see through but whatever
The dock is nice BTW but either put it in ONCE insanely carefully or put a little clear sticker at the bottom. It WILL scratch your device if docked wrong, and it's very hard to get in right. Extremely disappointed considering the prices involved.
Removed all distracting apps from my phone.
Left only: telegram, books, pocket(really enjoy reading articles, thanks #Mozzilla) and thats all!
I still will use maps, #FireFox (for unexpected questions), and etc, but i removed all social media from phone(including #Mastodon and #Reddit). I will use mastodon and reddit but only on my desktop.
So I want to check how it will be going after one week! May be its just small step on my way to a #dumbphone
Anyone knows any #Pocket alternatives with good code block rendering?
I use it a lot to read articles offline on my phone while travelling, but code blocks most of the time are either missing or merged into a single line.
#FOSS would be ideal but I can settle for proprietary options if they do a better job.
Any Omnivore read-it-later app users out there?
Seems Mozilla has de-listed the #Omnivore Firefox extension and is dragging their heels to get it reinstated.
Yes, the same #Mozilla that owns #Pocket, the read-it-later app.
I smell a rat. Mozilla needs to come clean on this. They are pro #opensource right?
ofc analogue sold out of the limited-edition transparent pockets in .05 seconds this morning. but why feel fomo? you can make ur own boys! #analogue#pocket#gameboy#nintendo#retro
Looks like the latest #analogue pocket (or maybe the core updates? I did it all at once) finally lets you use the different filters on pretty much any core.
Hmm, my #analogue#pocket did the thing again, it acted like it was waking up, blank grey screen for many seconds, then restarted the loaded game on the current Core.
That's not how it acts from a full shutdown OR a wake, so it's gotta either be a bug, or some "feature" I don't know about
Trying out #Flipboard cause I thought it might be a better version of #Pocket and @mike is very supportive of the #fediverse. But it's very different. I'm used to having an extension to save stuff there, getting a clean version of the article and having it read to me. I thought there might be lots of apps that did all this. Maybe not. @omnivore fails these tests so far too. Eventual integration with the fedi is my dream.
Another one: What do people use for reading out loud articles? At best on #Android? I find that #Pocket has really robotic voice, #ReadAloud has terrible #UX and I just miss the way this works in #MSEdge.
Analogue is shipping its TurboGrafx console and restocking Pockets (www.theverge.com)
Just in time for the holidays.
