Here are 3 ways to play your favorite old games without giving your money to a fascist:

  1. Get an emulation-based handheld. Companies like Anbernic have gotten good at this actually! https://anbernic.com
  2. Mod authentic hardware. FunnyPlaying’s parts are reliably high quality. https://funnyplaying.com
  3. Get an FPGA-based handheld. The premium option is the hard-to-get Analogue Pocket. (FunnyPlaying makes one too)

it’s really cool that intel was like “our small cores are not efficient enough” and instead of improving the design created another tier of efficiency core. they now have three types of cores, creating the first big-little-littler chip 🤦‍♂️

ideal handheld gaming machine:

  • iPad mini form factor
  • switch oled-like 180-ishº stand
  • the most powerful ARM-based SoC available (no x86 on mobile devices, come on)
  • long battery life (see above)
  • detachable joycons with great ergonomics (i.e. razer kishi ultra, hori split pad pro, or even detachable dualsense halves) that also snap together to form a complete bluetooth controller
  • all the emulators
  • valve proton/apple game porting toolkit
  • ps remote play
  • ProMotion/VRR
bnys,
@bnys@lasersword.club avatar

@exchgr i was thinking the other day that it’d be wild if Apple made a handheld based on M3 that could run Steam games via Proton. not an advocate for detachable controllers tho, always gonna be a suboptimal, fiddly solution imo

bnys,
@bnys@lasersword.club avatar

@exchgr that said! after using an M1 iPad for a couple months now the battery life is only gonna be a bit better than a Steam Deck for intensive games. I can watch the battery drop just browsing in Safari yikes

san francisco has not undergone "manhattanization" in its built form but feels more and more like manhattan in that many people who work there don't and can't live there, and as a result don't care about the city as a community, only as an aesthetic.

EDIT: Apparently my system can't handle USB 3.2 2x2 so the test is moot.

For those who may be in the market for external SSDs…

Samsung's T7 has been a favorite of internet folks for some time. The T9 came out late last year with the promise of (up to) double the read & write speeds (2,000 MB/s!). I don't need the speed, but I was curious. Bought both drives with the intention of returning one.

Wouldn't ya know that the speeds are almost indistinguishable.

T7 Shield it is.

bnys,
@bnys@lasersword.club avatar

@Dylan I think the catch is that your computer needs to support USB-4 at 20Gbps speeds, which Macs do not without Thunderbolt support and neither do a whole lot of PCs.

bnys,
@bnys@lasersword.club avatar

@Dylan Ah sorry I got it slightly wrong: this uses some weird implementation of the USB 3.2 spec that is basically double lanes of 10Gbps (3.2 Gen2x2...catchy!). Apple doesn't support this. It's not USB-4 or TB, it's USB 3.
