I’ve been using new shiny languages for a while now. #Rust, #Zig and #Swift in particular.
I love Rust’s tooling, Swift’s syntax, and Zig’s philosophy, but I feel like good old #Cpp is still the goat.

Yeah, the syntax can get out of hand really quickly.
Yeah, the STL is bloated.
Yeah, the tooling ecosystem is a mess.

But at the end of the day, with a good style guide and some discipline, it can check most of my boxes.

But learning new languages is always fun so I’m still doing it 😬

I have a growing feeling that AI is going to be a massive foot-gun.

Anyone knows any #Pocket alternatives with good code block rendering?
I use it a lot to read articles offline on my phone while travelling, but code blocks most of the time are either missing or merged into a single line.

#FOSS would be ideal but I can settle for proprietary options if they do a better job.

Extra points if they have native desktop app.

Thx!

@adamsdesk

Omnivore seems to be just what I wanted, thanks!

The code block rendering is still a bit weird at times but much better than Pocket’s.

I like the fact that also works with PDFs and the integrated RSS reader (although it’s a bit too spartan).

Too bad they don’t have a native desktop app.

I’ll use it for now and if I like it and have some time I might consider contributing.

I finally got to the point in the #CraftingInterpreters book where I can have different block scopes and it's starting to feel like a real language! :D

In this week’s #Linux and #OpenSource news video, we have @elementary OS 7.1, bringing a lot of small (but welcome) touches to the distro, we have malware making its way on to the Snap store, and France working on a law that might ban VPNs or make them basically useless.

@thelinuxEXP what's going on lately with the attempts to attack privacy and censor the Internet?
First the UK and now France!? They are supposed to be liberal democracies with strong protections for civil liberties!

Anyone knows #FOSS alternatives to Apple’s “Hide my email”?

@AngryAnt @javier_salcedo I’m trying to stop over relying on services I can’t control or replace easily, so self-hosted would be ideal but not necessarily a must

Using your own domain sounds like a good approach. Does it give you any issues with spam filters?

Proposal: stop saying stuff like "we're destroying the planet" and change it to "they're destroying the planet", to pivot away from self blame when most of us don't have the power to change things and definitely would if we could, and towards laying the blame squarely on the elites propping up the fossil fuel industry so we can focus our collective anger on those actually responsible

javier_salcedo,
@javier_salcedo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@eniko I’d say that can be counterproductive.
Why are they polluting? Because they’re moustache-twirling villains that want to destroy the world? No, they do bc they are producing the goods that we need/demand.
Only blaming the producers will have either no effect (bc the demand will not decrease) or will make their products more expensive (specially damaging the lower classes).
We need cleaner and cheaper technologies, and we’re making progress.
