My opinion on #COP28: the whole event has been a hoax hijacked by fossil #lobbyists and #bigoil.
It's better to end this charade without any conclusive text than with a draft that does not mention the need to #phaseout of #fossilfuels.

I read about #COP28 delegates opting against #PhaseOut on my way to the school carol concert. Hearing all the children singing carols (in mild, balmy weather) knowing what world leaders are doing to them, worrying about their future was just 💔. And yes i know this is kitsch; it’s not about the future; all of us here are privileged and this emotion is privileged etc etc etc. But still

Not surprisingly, oil producers do their best to keep "phaseout" language out of any #COP28 agreement.
#OPEC's letters noted that a “#FossilFuels#phaseout” remains on the negotiating table at the UN climate summit and urges the oil states to “proactively reject any text or formula that targets energy, ie fossil fuels, rather than emissions”.

Didn't say though that if we don't phase-out fossil fuels soon, there will be no #humanity left to return to any cave.

51/n I mean, it IS progress that the #COP28 overton window is now #PhaseOut vs #PhaseDown. Considering that 3 years ago fossil fuels were still not even mentioned. Now at least this is what is being talked about. BUT: we just have so little time; we really do need immediate commitment to #PhaseOut, not the longest possible, most watered down #PhaseDown version now being agreed (and then pledges not even being met, of course). 55/n #COP28 🧵 well now we have it: the Landmark Deal. The Schrödinger Cat of landmark deals: it both is and isn’t one! Yes, there is an agreement to “transition away”. Which is not nothing. But it is not at all, at all enough; the weakest, possible version you can imagine.
I just hope it’s enough of a wedge to make substantial further progress on #PhaseOut at #COP29 and #COP30. Clutching straws, I know, but you have to make the most of what you have
Climate breakdown. Conflict. Energy crisis. Growing social disaffection. Economic disturbance. What will it take for our leaders to get their sheet together and declare a de facto 'wartime emergency'?
Our governments need to put the financial system and national industries on a 'war footing', just as Churchill and Roosevelt did during WW2, in order to produce energy cleanly, from renewables (not the nuclear distraction).
