On Monday will my third show on Hacker Public Radio be aired! It's a short and concise one, and a good one... ;-) One thing I like with HPR is that the shows are done by ordinary people - listeners - like myself, and you can also make a show. But why not start by subscribing to the HPR pod!
How... had I never realized that "perldoc -f <builtin-function>” is a thing? Game changer!
I realized this as I'm poking around to find out if there is /any/ way (documented or not) to substitute the current program/topic in the =pod section, so I can copy a script template around and require fewer changes to get up and running.
If anyone has an answer to that (which may be of the form "Nope, no dice”), I would appreciate it.
@nxadm@vruz Would have been a neat alternate timeline if @gruber just used #Perl#POD instead of inventing #Markdown, but the former admittedly isn’t quite as aesthetic when viewed as plain text.
(As evidenced by the above sentence, which would have had to say I<quite> in POD for the same effect.)
Different times, different use cases: POD was invented in a world of man pages and ugly nroff codes; Markdown in web pages in ugly #HTML.
Imagine living your entire life in your living room, the vast world outside becoming an alien concept. For #dolphins in #MarineParks, this analogy becomes a harsh reality. Confined within the limited dimensions of an artificial enclosure, these sentient creatures endure a daily assault of bright lights and booming noises, while their instinctive urge to explore and socialize is constantly thwarted.
#Dolphins are built for the boundless #ocean, where they travel huge distances, socialise with their #pod, hunt for food, and navigate through challenges.
But in #captivity, their world shrinks drastically. They’re confined in limited spaces, surrounded by artificial environments, and subjected to continuous human interaction and unnatural behaviours, all for humans’ amusement.
It is with a heavy heart that I write to you on the first red cove day of 2023, a day that witnessed the ruthless #hunting and #slaughter of ~10 innocent Risso's #dolphins in #Taiji. The dolphins fought hard to escape but after a 2 hour chase, the entire #pod was forced into the cove and brutally killed.
Our team is not just standing by. At the end of August we submitted an appeal
I wonder if the whole #AI thing will finally convince artists that modern #copyright regime was never meant to protect them.
It was meant to protect the middlemen. The Amazons, the Spotifies, the Sonys, the Disneys. The film studios, the publishing houses.
Now the middlemen figured out they own basically all of art, and that they can just train a computer on that, to replace artists with a piece of software.
And then stop paying artists even the pittance they were being paid so far.
Before #PrintOnDemand#POD and online book sales, a book run was generally 10K copies or more. Someone had to organize & oversee the logistics of moving them all to stores & maintaining stock at the point of sale. Plus, 10K copies requires a lot more storage space than you would think. That's also another cost.
If you were lucky & your book sold more than 10K, another print run were another cost. Translations & international sales meant more expenses.
Back then, the only form of real "self-publish" was #VantiyPress, which was as much of a ripoff and waste of money then as it is today.
Basically, it's easy to be comfortable in this modern era and think that things have always been as they are now, that the #arts were always something that #artists could do on their own and pay the rent. It's easy for younger people to think that the middlemen were always unnecessary, but that's not true.
Things are moving fast. Now, fed up with Texas and property tax rates and current interest rates, we're likely packing up and leaving tomorrow instead of next Saturday. We're so disgusted and have no idea where we're going to live now. Virginia? Georgia? We're limited to states where I have an office and Florida is NOT an option for us for reasons.
@chris I know you don't wanna hear this, but we packed our shit in a #POD and moved into a Home2 Suites til our house was ready. We got lucky in that the people gave up the property WAY early...but that's what we did. They accept dogs!

Most writers are not experts in IT or formatting and would rather spend time writing. Self publishing is really self marketing. Traditional publishers are really marketing companies, few do their own printing, traditionally a Press. Volume paper printing is now mostly China and Eastern Europe. For small numbers of paper copies it’s best value to use Lulu or a similar Print on demand (POD) company.
Authors that want help with formatting and eBook conversion can contact Booknook.biz as we only deal with some local people face to face.
