Found it: Under "email address:” in the iCloud mail account settings, it had my primary email address for reasons I can't explain, but neither of the two actual iCloud email addresses I'd created years back. I removed it and added one of the iCloud addresses and it's happy.

@joshua YES!! That sounds about right. We had a similar problem. Now our iCloud accounts are just @iCloud.com email addresses.

    @joshua did you ever use that domain with Apple Custom Domain?

    @joshua you know, they really worked out most/all of those bugs. We just went back to Microsoft 365 with our custom domains because you can do hundreds of domains and there are more controls to block people/domains, etc. The Apple Custom Domain setup works but is pretty limited.

    @joshua 365 charges by the "user". Even shared mailboxes are free. We have 2 "users" on our account and pay $144 a year for both. Then I just have dozens of domains registered with catchall on my account and a couple of aliases.

    I’ve decided to add “this email was written by a human” to my signature on my work account. It’s apparent that some emails are written by AI, which is fine. It’s a bit startling when the “author” joins a meeting and has absolutely no signs of the articulation displayed in their email prose.
