In a few weeks @w3c social web community group meeting may receive a proposal to explore chartering new social web working group that would only be open to people who work at W3C member companies. (The CG is open to all). Today there was an in person discussion at TPAC, the yearly W3C-wide f2f. It was a day-of addition to the agenda. Now is a good time to join the CG, subscribe to mailing list, and start participating in the discussions. https://www.w3.org/community/SocialCG/#vote#activitypub
Had my first Jitsi teleconference (maybe ever?) yesterday on the https://meetingrooms.canwork.cloud server and I have to say everything Just Worked. Screen-sharing, juggling multiple windows, etc. Hmmm… maybe we don’t need Google or Zoom or Microsoft to talk to each other…
@timbray@jayholler and I use Jitsi to host our "show" which we stream using #Owncast. We replaced Google Hangouts or Google Meet or whatever it was called with Jitsi a while back.
The only issue we’ve run into so far is connecting the Jitsi iOS app to our self-hosted Jitsi server. Web works great though!
@electricmaxxx I don't know about Twitch. What I used was #Owncast many months ago on my old Ubuntu laptop and I used ffmpeg to screen capture video and sound as the video source, but without a second video source like a cam.
Hey adventurers!
This heatwave won't deny me the joy of writing Yet Another Announcement (YAA! in short)
The Gamer's Tavern will take a (really much deserved if you ask me, but I'm just the innkeper) two week long hiatus from #Streaming
🌴 Summer break, wo~ho!! 🌴
#TheGamersTavern will be back in #September with ✨ shiny new things ✨ that will be disclosed in the next few days!
I cannot express how much I'm grateful about the love you showed for the previous announcement about #Owncast and sure as hell I cannot express how much I'm grateful for being on the #Fediverse.
It's marvelous interacting with other people, asking their opinion, heck, putting that extra mile you're not used to (anymore) to give 'em back the warmth they give you.
It's a long way to detoxify myself from "old" social media, but it's a long way I'm bound to walk through.
The concerts at #defcon31 by @defcon_music are streaming on #Twitch and ours at #DCG201 is restreaming them LIVE! @mcohmi & @realytcracker are on as of this post!
Any chance of getting this streamed into the fediverse using OwnCast as well?
While I'm making unsolicited suggestions, it would be great to have the conference talks up on a PeerTube too, with a channel on an instance like conf.tube too. That way we can follow the channel from any PT instance, or from any other fediverse account on instances of Mastodon, FireFish, PixelFed etc
What’s your favorite live streaming platform? I prefer #YouTube as it’s my favorite entertainment app, but most creators there seem to stream on #twitch.
I know consolidation isn’t a good thing, but I kinda wish everyone just streamed on YouTube.
Because it's part of the Fediverse, you can follow OwnCast accounts from Mastodon etc, and when they go live you will see a post in your timeline to let you know.
For example, the RetroStrangeTV livestream can be viewed at:
Let me start by saying that you don't need to mess with your NAT or ISP to get aired on thirdparty #PeerTube instance. #Owncast, on the other hand, would require you to set up some reverse proxy in order to let others see you.
At the moment, though, PeerTube's live chat highly suffers from bot abuse and the lack of interoperability with #Fediverse. On Owncast, you can identify yourself in chat by logging in via Mastodon, for example, and you can have some guards to prevent spam.
@errhead & @agates - I know you both do things with @peertube … what do you think about @owncast? I frequently see #PeerTube listed as a YouTube alternative and #Owncast as a Twitch alternative. The latter is frequently mentioned as the best live streaming option that’s hooked into the #Fediverse but I see you all using PeerTube for this instead… thus my curiosity.
@owncast@agates can explain the details, but basically I’m interested in #Owncast’s openness to supporting what’s needed so that podcasters can use it for live shows. Currently all the shows that support the <podcast:liveItem> tag are using @peertube. Here I see recommendations for Owncast for its #Fediverse integration so it seems it could also be a good option
I have an account on both misskey and calckey instances and #owncast announcements seem to be formatted in a way that breaks the link to join the channel
then misskey converts it into its own internal representation (misskey-flavoured markdown) without adding any whitespace to mark the ``, so when it converts it again to HTML for presentation, the hashtag and the link get smushed together Reported upstream
Got my first #OwnCast stream using #OBS running tonight from my #HomeLab! It worked, but I noticed that while my little server handled it really well, it took about 56% of the CPU resources at any given time while streaming.
So...just have to be aware that I probably don't want to be running this on the same machine as a bunch of CPU hungry services.
This saves me a whole $10 / mo by running it from home. 😆
I announced my conference (https://social.anoxinon.de/@RoedigerRG/110157586653566017) a few months ago. Since this will take place soon, and I am a great FLOSS friend, I wondered how I can possibly stream presentations using FLOSS to comply with data protection. It should be associated with little effort. Does anyone have suggestions (#PeerTube, #Owncast …)?
I might stream, on my #owncast tonight, some Wii gameplay since I found my USB sensor bar.
However I don't feel too good/healthy so this may be unwise.
