Are you sure that you want to power your astronomical telescopes with electricity that has such high carbon intensity? #ORM#GTC#CTA#LaPalma#ClimateEmergency
My working day started with the Today programme on #BBCRadio4 in the UK, and ended with As It Happens on #CBC in Canada! The middle was a conference in #LaPalma#IAUS385 😅
Exactly 2 years ago today after many weeks of earthquakes, we saw this happening from our rooftop. The new volcano had been born. Although it was special to witness, it brought misery to many people on La Palma.
Now two years later, new roads have been built. Tourists are welcome. The affected area is only a small part of the island and also special to visit.
Some of those affected have been able to buy a piece of land and some are already building a new house. (1/2)
Soaring temperatures last week were part of the cause of the wildfires in La Palma in the Canary Islands.
Also, the area has seen below-average rainfall in recent years, just like large parts of the drought-stricken mainland Spain, because of changing weather patterns impacted by climate change.
Weather conditions are expected to improve this week, which will help firefighters bring the blaze under control.
The Roque de los Muchachos Observatory in La Palma was evacuated yesterday as a precautionary measure against the wildfire blazing downhill of the observatory.
Gap dynamics in the summit scrub of Caldera de #Taburiente NP (La Palma, #Canary Is): The death of #Adenocarpus viscosus (yellow flowers) allows #Viola palmensis (purple flowers) to flourish.
Tajinastes (#Echium wilpretii ssp trichosiphon) in Caldera de Taburiente NP (La Palma, #Canary Is.) are now flowering. They are difficult to miss in the way to the top!
I didn't expect that the most surviving species after the #LaPalma volcano (#Canary Is) would be the #fig tree (#Ficus caria)! Their canopy (in green) emerge from ashes (most tree is below the ashes). #Pinus#canariensis in the background is not as healthy as the fig tree!.
