The odds are better for a Martian Crow to flyby the heli and say "caw-caw" than they are for the rover to cross the sand field and say "cling-cling" 🥴

PaulHammond51,

@65dBnoise I'd have to agree with those odds. I can imagine some of the engineering team that built it would give limbs to get a closer look...

Up there is where #Perseverance took some of the best shots of #Ingenuity at its final landing location. It was there two months ago, around Sol 1100. Tosol is Sol 1163 of the mission.

Another ~25m and #Perseverance will be out of t̵h̵e̵ ̵w̵o̵o̵d̵s̵ the regolith ripple field and in the mostly flat part of the Neretva Vallis riverbed.

Tosol's ~17m drive brought the rover right where those ripples start. The dark area is where #Ingenuity will be hidden from our remote prying eyes.

@65dBnoise@mastodon.social avatar

@sharponlooker
It was about time after all those months in the middle of rocky nowhere 😜 The loose regolith ahead seems rather shallow, with bedrock showing here and there (IANAG™), and the rover drivers did a pretty good job bringing it down here on a steady and safe pace. Two more drives and that's it, I think.

#Ingenuity is seen here sticking its solar panel above the sandy waves of #ValinorHills in this image from Sol 1152 received today. While the solar panel of the #MarsHelicopter may still be visible from the rover at its present location on Sol 1159, it will soon disappear when #Perseverance clears the ripples it's facing on its way northwest to Bright Angel.

It is a little frustrating that SuperCam isn't taking a break from doing close up shots of wrinkly rocks, to photograph Ingenuity from another angle.

I would think that the helicopter team would want as many photos of that final landing as possible, to help determine what, exactly, went wrong.

65dBnoise,
@65dBnoise@mastodon.social avatar

@tom30519
I may have turned into a pessimist, but judging by telltales and gut feelings, this might be a result of budgetary cuts. If NASA apply the governing US policy for space privatization, a.k.a. $→"space economy", it only follows that science missions will see dramatic changes. We may be seeing that already.

But to balance it, we may see more of:
"Here is superhero Musk crash-landing a Starship on Mars!
What a great success for space economy!
Humanity, rejoice!"
🙄

New location for #Perseverance on Sol 1144, RMC 52.1950.

This may be the last location visible by #Ingenuity's RTE camera, as the rover has now reached the theoretical limit of its field-of-view (cyan line). The #MarsHelicopter has been programmed to capture one RTE image every sol for as long as it is able to wake up every sol perform its routine of gathering environmental and system data, as a stationary testbed.

The slope of the southern Neretva Vallis riverbank appears steepening at this new location. This may be the start of the hardest part of the descent to the ancient riverbed, on the way to the geologically interesting rock formation Bright Angel, the next science target for #Perseverance.

Now we wait for the Perseverance team to downlink those images from Ingenuity.

However, it is unknown when NASA will try to retrieve images from the Mars Helicopter. Maybe people who still have an account on X, where NASA has an official presence, could ask them to do that?

New location for #Perseverance on Sol 1143, RMC 52.1700, presumably still within #Ingenuity's field-of-view. It appears there may be as many as 3 frames of the rover crossing the FOV of the color RTE camera of the #MarsHelicopter, now a stationary testbed collecting images, temperature and other data on a solly basis from its final location at Vallinor Hills.

#Perseverance moved to the center of the area which is most probably visible by #Ingenuity, and it could appear in one or more of the color RTE images the #MarsHelicopter is capturing every sol, if everything is going according to plan.

#Perseverance has now entered an area where #Ingenuity can possibly see it through its color RTE camera from its final Valinor Hills location, albeit its apparent size will be quite small and at a corner of an image (more here: https://mastodon.social/@65dBnoise/112354242549766329)

The #MarsHelicopter has been instructed to capture one RTE image and other data every sol, according to #NASA (https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/nasas-ingenuity-mars-helicopter-team-says-goodbye-for-now)

The question now is when those captured images will be retrieved.

#Perseverance at last turned its SUPERCAM telescope to #Ingenuity. That's from a 500m distance. The smudge between the heli and its footprints on the left is dust or some other SUPERCAM flaw that exists in all images.
