Toyota believes it will be possible to build a prototype powered by a hydrogen-combustion engine that could challenge for outright victories in the World Endurance Championship from 2026.
Just a few months into a joint innovation project (earlier post), engineers from Bosch Engineering and Ligier Automotive have built a high-performance vehicle with a hydrogen engine. The demonstrator is based on the Ligier JS2 R race car, which was modified for hydrogen operation. The Ligier JS2 RH2 was officially...
Mercedes-Benz has signed a supply agreement with Swedish start-up H2 Green Steel (H2GS) (earlier post) over approximately 50,000 tonnes almost CO₂-free steel per year for its European press shops and deepened its partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the aim to establish a sustainable steel supply chain...
New study estimates global warming potential of #hydrogen
"Unlike exhaust from burning coal & gas that contains CO2, burning hydrogen emits only water vapor & oxygen. Rather... leaking of hydrogen from production, transportation & usage that adds to global warming.
...its chemical reactions in the atmosphere affect ghg like methane, ozone, and stratospheric water vapor... hydrogen can cause global warming, despite its lack of direct radiative properties" https://phys.org/news/2023-06-global-potential-hydrogen.html #ClimateChange
>“We’re going to be taking technology from high income countries and moving into low and middle income countries. That’s the diffusion of environmentally sound technologies,” Sanders says. The startup plans to build much larger plants to fulfill its agreement with #Boeing and other new customers — one in #Singapore and an even bigger one in a location the company has yet to disclose.
How about this idea instead? Let's just STOP FLYING SO MUCH!!
Nationalize the airlines and shut them down. Take over the factory farms and close them for good.
Except that probably makes way too much sense. It's what any thinking person with a conscience would do.
But capitalists don't care. They don't care about killing animals or polluting the atmosphere or even bringing about the end of civilization. None of that matters to them if there's 💵 money 💵 to be made!
"The head of #QatarAirways voiced scepticism on Tuesday over an #aviation industry target of achieving net-zero #emissions by 2050, citing inadequate supplies of Sustainable Aviation Fuel and alternative #hydrogen designs in their infancy.
"Everybody's talking about it, but let us be realistic - there is not enough production of sustainable aviation fuel." "
it seems we have just discovered we will need to deal with a massive issue once the batteries need discarding / recycling...
I would be very interested to see the entire carbon footprint of the entire life of a BEV. Is it actually a benefit compared to biofuel? What about #Hydrogen vehicles?
@dimi It will be #hydrogen cars that will be the future. It solves the raw material problem of batteries while still being electric cars. And if not, then something like e-fuels which allows for clean ICE vehicles.
I've generally been skeptical of #hydrogen production as a viable #energy route going forward, but when you see headlines like this, it makes you think that perhaps green hydrogen can make sense.
Although, being dependent on the unreliability or sharp imbalances of the weather is something akin to an oxymoron become manifest.
There is a massive amount of hydrogen for heavy industries that needs to be replaced. It’s an enormous challenge even without trying to replace more efficient electric #transport.
Your document doesn’t discuss this at all. Ignoring this is folly wrt the #climateemergency.
The EU plans more joint purchasing after the success of its common gas scheme.
The bloc will push ahead with plans to jointly buy hydrogen and critical raw materials after its first attempt at aggregated gas purchases was oversubscribed.
Several leading energy players took part in a round of joint gas purchases, which matched 10.9bn cubic metres of demand — more than 80% of the EU’s year-end target — from gas buyers with potential suppliers.
@dmoser for now, it‘s inefficient, we all agree but potential is huge for get more efficiency and they already made progress in labs. Furher imagine everyone owns an EV plugs the EV at 7 pm for charging. The net has to deliver the need. Do we really think the current state of electricity network scales well enough to deliver this amount of power? I doubt. I could imagine in a not so far future a decentralized storage of power using #hydrogen in every home. We‘ll see.
There's a way to create H2 from waste, mainly soft plastic bags, through pyrolysis and steam reformation, something that should be done on an industrial level in order to produce greener #hydrogen
