Working on a session proposal for a conference, and they have , and, most surprisingly, listed as "countries" for registration.

Of course, it's a conference. You would never see this type of inclusion in a or conference.

Israel's disastrous, inhumane, & barbaric response to has led to an unfathomable amount of deaths, injuries, democide... to Palestinians trying to stay alive in Gaza. The ICC's decisions have been correct.

Amount of Israeli bombs dropped on Gaza surpasses that of WWII -Israel dropped 70,000 tons of bombs on Gaza Strip since last Oct, exceeding WWII bombings in Dresden, Hamburg, London combined.

The uninsurable world: how the insurance industry fell behind on climate change

Surge in floods and fires has caught out the insurance industry and added an ‘uncertainty factor’ to premiums

: "The official Independent Monitoring Mechanism in Bulgaria - established between the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee, the UNHCR and the Bulgarian Border Police in 2010 - reported 5,268 pushbacks in 2022, affecting 87,467 people, and 9,897 alleged pushbacks in 2023, affecting 174,588 persons.

This was, for the second time, almost a doubling of the figures reported the previous year. Indeed, a recent investigation by a coalition of media outlets revealed violent pushbacks are an “open secret” in Bulgaria.

Strikingly, the Bulgarian authorities continue to deny that these figures are the result of pushbacks. They claim these statistics merely cover "preventions of entry" as a result of increased border surveillance in Turkey."

At the time of the #brexit referendum I warned many people the real reason was not to leave the EU but to leave the European Convention of Human rights and with it the Court which protects them. Now the Tories and Hitler Farage are promising just that. Expect mass harassment and rounding up of opponents plus those they seem morally wrong if they ever get anywhere near power. #echr #humanrights #election #uk

Billions of people are currently enduring temperatures between 45 and 50°C.

This situation is occurring with just a 1.5°C global temperature increase.

At 2°C, these areas will become uninhabitable for extended periods each year.

The absence of a comprehensive plan to address this is alarming. Immediate mitigation is essential.

I ask this relatively regularly because I want to keep an eye on the landscape.

I'm a software engineer with a PhD in international criminal law. I am on the lookout for (open source?) projects that are useful to human rights researchers/activists/defenders. I am hoping to contribute as a volunteer software engineer.

If you know of a project like this, please get in touch. If you don't, please boost if you'd like!

@hgrsd is a stand out project, which has stuck to a set of democratising values, rejecting easy choices (such as VC funding) and taking the hard road for eighteen years.

It is now approaching launch and will be an opportunity to create a new generation of privacy and user centred apps. It levels the development playing field to give even individuals the chance to scale world-wide and take on the big centralised platforms without VC funding.

Human smuggling from B.C. to U.S. is soaring, border stats show

"... human smuggling groups see people as a "commodity," and seek to profit off people seeking to get into the U.S. because "there's tons of opportunity here."

"Canada and the United States are places that people want to come and there is always going to be smuggling involved,"

“Hong Kong’s mass show trial lays bare Beijing’s utter contempt for fundamental freedoms and democratic political processes,” said Maya Wang, acting China director at HRW
