MACHT. GESELLSCHAFT.
The upcoming "Posthuman Gaming" from Poppy Wilde explores the relationship between avatar and #Gamer in the massively multiplayer online roleplaying game #WorldOfWarcraft.
The Video Game History Foundation and the Software Preservation Network conducted the first ever study on the commercial availability of classic video games, and the results are bleak.
More than half (87%) of classic video games released in the United States are critically endangered -- unfindable and unplayable.
"Just 13% of video game history is being represented in the current marketplace. In fact, no period of video game history defined in this study even cracked 20% representation."
This is pretty messed up. The study just backs up what advocates of physical media have been saying for years.
Are there some Swedish speaking #GameStudies colleagues out there to help me out? Apparently André Wüthrich programmed an Amiga for a ZDF quiz show with Thomas Gottschalk #GAmeStudies@chludens
When studying the history of video games, we often find ourselves needing to imagine and reconstruct the computing landscape of various decades throughout the 20th Century.
We encounter fragments of computing history since games were always present somewhere (at least that's what Steven Levy says in his book Hackers, and in my experience it often turns to be true).
Were there games on these early computing machines, across different countries? We know of a few, but how many are we missing? And will we find them one day?

Happy to share that a book project I've been involved in has just been publicly announced and will be published in spring 2024: "Spiel*Kritik – Kritische Perspektiven auf Videospiele im Kapitalismus" is a volume focusing on a range of fascinating topics around gaming.
I had the immense pleasure of working with Fabienne Freymadl aka Lady Velvet Steel (https://bdsm-studio-lux.de/portfolio-item/lady-velvet-steel/) to write an extensive analysis of the representation of sex work in digital games from the early 80s until today.
As far as I know, the book will only be available in German for the foreseeable future, but perhaps if enough copies are sold, a translated version could be commissioned?
Published today: I created a dataset on the sales and distribution of 19 (German) gaming magazines 1980-2000 and published it together with an accompanying blogpost (including some rough findings) on the @chludens research blog! 🥳 #GameStudies
Here’s my book contribution “Shared Realities, Solitary Actions: Media Languages as Agents of Formation, Reinforcement, and Change.”
It’s part of the anthology Narratives Crossing Boundaries: Storytelling in a Transmedial and Transdisciplinary Context, ed. J. Friedmann. Transcript, SEP 2023.
First off, it’s CC-licensed! You can buy it of course but also download it FOR FREE! I'll drop a few words on what it’s about later.
