Testing out #Fusion360 because i think it might be a better tool than #OnShape
I can not express how ridiculously frustrating it is to have it take MULTIPLE MINUTES (5+?) to export a damn stl file or export an archive file.
Also, I effing hate it's "we're a desktop app, except you're screwed without our servers". Fucking commit. At least OnShape had the cajones to go "it's a web app".
Somehow OnShape manages to export any format instantly or within a few seconds.
#3DPrinting I've been spending a lot of time in #OnShape lately. Overall I prefer the way you interact with it to the way you interact with #Fusion360, but I'm starting to think Fusion360 may actually be a significantly better app.
I've got very little XP with Fusion, & I hate they way they handle free accounts, but... I think I'm going to start my next project in it and see how that goes.
Happy #MakerMonday , heres a #lasercut coffin I designed in #Fusion360 for #DND mini and dice I made for sale. Great gift for that party member who just wont stop jumping into holes they shouldn't.
Yes, the choice of rose dice are inspired by the song Kiss From A Rose by Seal, and yes, the dice are ordered from lowest to highest number of sides, everyone does this its very normal.
I ended up abandoning #OpenSCAD unfortunately. After a few days, I couldn’t recreate a component I had made in about 20 mins in #Fusion360 so decided not to fight it. 🙃 Maybe I'll give it another shot when I'm not trying to get a product out the door.
I've used FreeCAD to do some minor designing for 3D printing. It works fine, but it's a bit too rigid and formal for my use cases. I don't need to constrain every single edge, face, or vertex. Blender isn't really too suited for this task, at least I didn't like it for this task.
Many seem to use Fusion 360 and it's free for personal use. AutoDesk isn't exactly a nice company, but perhaps this is a case where one can be pragmatic.
A friend of mine is looking for a Fusion 360 person to do 2D and 3D design work for an exciting large-scale international puppetry project. It's on-site at a studio in west Hove (UK). If you (or someone you know) is interested, drop me a DM for more info.
I just used Tinkercad entirely with touch on a Pixel Tablet because I was too lazy to go get a real comptuter and… it was actually pretty nice!
Huge props to the Tinkercad folks for having clearly thought out how it should work with touch; it was intuitive for someone who had only ever used it with a mouse and keyboard before. I will probably design more things from the couch, now. :)
#TinkerCAD is not advanced or difficult to use, which it gets a lot of hate for, but it is actually amazing.
My cousin recently got a printer. The hype lasted a month, and now it is only collecting dust. When I got my printer, I printed a single spool in the first year. 3 in the second year, and now, in the third year, I gave up counting. The difference was that I started to design my own stuff, and my cousin has now run out of stuff on Printables.
The biggest hindrance to 3D printing is the desire to design and print your own things. I had a lot of experience with Blender and played with SketchUp when it just came out and still belonged to Google.
TinkerCAD is often the goto tool for beginners. If we didn't have it, newbies would need to go to #Fusion360 or #onShape, which could be intimidating.
TinkerCAD is an underappreciated pilar of the 3D printing community.
