Mastodon has successfully sold 12 million people on the practical use of decentralization because they see it in action. And they love it.

Bluesky’s biggest fans think decentralization is horseshit—and they’re hostile to it being implemented.

This is a bad omen for Bluesky.

scenario,

@atomicpoet Nope, we've had this conversation before. No one outside of techfolk cares about the #fediverse. They only care about having no ads and less Draconian policies.

The fact that Mastodon is decentralized is double-edged sword. It's technically and architecturally more flexible, but at a significant cost to UX. Those costs spring mostly from hindered interoperability, a lack of feature parity, and UI consistency.

And as I predicted months ago, we've already seen bad fiefdoms pop up.

#BlueSky is a step backwards for #Decentralisation. It'll be another walled garden with power concentrated at the admin level instead of the user being in control.

Just as with #Mastodon, the focus will be on scalability of a few really big instances, instead of creating an environment that fosters a network of many small instances.

There's a reason that I have a single user instance since many years. I strongly believe that a better balance of power is possible and achievable for #ActivityPub

nicemicro,
@nicemicro@fosstodon.org avatar

@jwildeboer I believe that while single-user instances are good for technically inclined users who want to enjoy all the freedoms and burdens that come with self-hosting, but I also think that large instances with a stable financial backing (hopefully directly from their users) are also good for non-technical users who want stability.

Small instances where one guy maintains a server for 20 people will leave the users hanging when the admin decides they've had enough.

Some people will never leave Twitter because it's familiar, they're an established journalist addicted to feeling important, or because they're right-wing chuds who want to see Musk and Truth Social Redux succeed.

Some will migrate to Bluesky for Twitter without Musk. Some will stick with Mastodon on principle or because it's good enough. And then there's some also rans. But I don't think Mastodon or Twitter are going anywhere anytime soon.

adamjcook,

@donnodubus All I am saying is that, fundamentally, #Bluesky breaks no new ground and it seems that its design intent was effectively a clone of Twitter - which is immediately frictionless to many just seeking a quick "Musk free" alternative.

Fine with me, but I predict Bluesky users are running straight into the same buzzsaw.

#Mastodon and the #Fediverse, while far from ideal today on multiple levels, are at least putting the work in to change an already proven-to-be disastrous status quo.

Day 1471 since Robert Mueller recommended charging Trump with ten counts of Obstruction.

Day 842 since Trump levied armed warfare against the United States government.

Day 834 since Trump stole classified documents.

Day 779 since Attorney General Merrick Garland took office at DOJ.

Day 161 since Garland punted his job to Jack Smith.

Day 146 since Trump called for the termination of our Constitution.

Day 131 since the J6C made some criminal referrals.

DOJ, FBI and SCOTUS are complicit. ⚖️

scenario,

@darthdzl Trying to figure out why, if the #fediverse and decentralization is as awesome as @atomicpoet claims, I would lose 15% of my followers when I switched servers — and then have to manually follow everyone else again.

@jalcine I have zero interest in another profit-driven (1) platform with questionable terms of service (2) and lenient attitude towards moderation (3), and one that uses the term "decentralized" very generously, considering its single instance is invite-only.

Couldn’t we just make a adapter? Two options come to mind:

  1. Make a PR for BlueSky that implements
  2. Build a service which “impersonates” all mastodon users on bluesky and all bluesky users on mastodon.

@darren@c.im avatar

@anders Absolutely someone could, and very likely will. When it happens, I hope its bi-directionnal. The one way relays from #nostr to #fediverse, and those from twitter, are not very engaging.

    asahi95,

    @MissingThePt Only reason why I'm not joining #BlueSky is because it ain't federated..

    Besides, the #Fediverse and #ActivityPub are miles better than BlueSky will ever be

    youronlyone,

    @DocCarms Yep. I'm seeing more and more Earthquake alert services in the #fediverse. LOL.

    My Philippine keyword watch is getting filled by them. ^_^;; It wasn't like this before Twitter disabled everyone's API access.

    Moral of all the things I'm seeing/boosting this morning: If people leave for a proprietary service, figure out what that proprietary service is doing that interests them, instead of trying to argue them not to. Many people aren't here because it's #federated and #FOSS. They're here because it's better than the state of #twitter, and they'll leave when they feel like something is better than the state of #mastodon

    I'm going to stay because I love #foss, but that's not everyone's priority.

    nix,
    @nix@social.stlouist.com avatar

    This flip side to this is that people leaving isn't automatically a travesty. The #fediverse is built on resilient and adaptable ideas. We can stay and discuss and improve. And maybe #bluesky or The Next Big Thing will take people for a while, before it turns out to have its own problems, or before it faces #enshittification. And if we're still evolving while that happens, then people might come back and see previous concerns have been addressed.

    I know a number of people who looked at joining #Mastodon and were discouraged by just having to choose an #instance (many still don't understand what an instance is). The ones who did join had trouble navigating -- and gave up leaving unused accounts. I'm talking people in my circle: SF authors, some science & environment writers, (writing is their strength not tech), some academics, etc.
    What about a sign-up process that proposes specific instances catered to their preferences? Have a short questionnaire where the info (which shows their areas of interest) is used to generate a proposed list of no more than 4 or 5 instances that are a match to what they'd like (do they want a specialty instance -- what area? A general interest one? One with a focus on human rights/environment/the arts/fiction/journalism? etc. While many instances have similar themes, there could be a random element in the selection of the 4 or 5 instances proposed to newbies.
    Then once they get used to being on Mastodon, they can choose to move another instance if they want.
    It could also help distribute users around the #Fediverse.
    Also, if you're new to Mastodon, it's a bit of a learning curve navigating between instances. And while there are new apps and abilities to make some of these things easier -- they're hard to find and newbies (especially non tech types) don't know to look or ask, or know how to use them.
    There are a lot of interesting people who just don't have the time to learn a bunch of new steps -- so as much automation as possible between the instances could really help.

    Buenos días. Buenas tardes. Buenas noches. Dicen los que saben que tarde o temprano se vuelve al primer amor, en mi caso es Elementary OS 7 Horus. Sin dudas ha mejorado mucho lo que ya era bueno. Es un sistema operativo para aquellos que valoran más la simplicidad, limpieza y sencillez, tanto como la escasa posibilidad de configuraciones y personalizaciones. Corre bien en un equipo de pocos recursos. Tiene una tienda de aplicaciones con muchas propias y la posibilidad de instalar apps de Flatpak. Y en esta versión hay actualizaciones automáticas. Para el nivel de usuario que soy me encuentro más que cómodo con lo que ofrece y se puede obtener de Elementary OS 7 Horus.

    En resumen: funciona bien (al menos para mí) y si no eres de los que necesitan personalizarlo todo, Elementary es una opción más que saludable.
