I'm on the search for a well run #Instance that is #Meta / #Threads free. I have #Mastofriends in #Europe particularly so any instances there that are safe (and that would HAVE me) would be cool. But in any case, I'm after a new safe home where I'm sure the "blocked_domains.csv" will take effect, and that can tolerate an idle fucker who posts a lot of pictures (with Alt Txt, naturally).

FEDI PACT FUN FACT

if you're wondering why i didn't choose a more appropriate domain for https://fedipact.online

it's because i only had like $2 in my bank account when i was setting everything up lmao 😂

i picked what was cheap but relatively appropriate

reasons you should defederate threads

  1. it's meta
  2. it's meta
  3. IT'S META

lucid00, to fediverse

A lot of people in the are saying that Threads joining is a form of "Embrace, extend, extinguish" and IMO I don't think that's the case.

There's no need for Meta to kill this network or absorb it.

ActivityPub by design favors big servers like Meta's, it also not being nomadic (like BlueSky cough) means that users can't easily jump ship from a server they don't like.

I already see the posts discussing leaving notable servers like Mastodon.social and it's silly IMO.

By design this whole network was built on shaky ground and when discussion of any Bluesky style improvements came up most users flipped out.

We'll be here again and again until those improvements come, if they ever come.

Reality is Meta knows they're king already and they don't need the regular users on the Fediverse.

IMO they want the WordPress profiles.
They want the illusion of freedom for celebrities and corporations.

"Host your own Facebook Page" basically.

I also lets them duck any regulatory oversight.

ophiocephalic, to FediPact

The only reason the algorithmic biases of the Zuckerberg entity are not dominating fedi discourse at this very moment is because they began to federate with "sharing" opt-in. If/when they switch that toggle over, 160 million accounts governed by these censorship algorithms will flood in and algorithmic creep could quickly destroy the journalistic prospect of the fediverse. Why would journalists show up here if less than 1% of the network can see their posts?

honestly it warms my heart and makes me really happy to see large swaths of the fediverse coming together to defend our communities against the evil megacorporation known as meta

BAN FUCKING NAZIS

it's such a low godddamn bar to clear

and yet, by and large, the fediverse is the only major social media platform that actually manages to do this (the decent sections of it, at least)

why? well, here's the big secret: BECAUSE WE DON'T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT PROFIT

big companies allow nazis to fester on their services because it makes them money, and here we're not beholden to such a corrupting influence. that's kinda the entire point

Probably a lot of the problem causing people to remain stubbornly on instances like mastodon.social & the other big ones that federate with threads & shit is some kind of inability to understand the concepts of horizontalism and federation themselves. People want the fediverse to be a "replacement" for corporate internet with someone at the "top" who just takes care of shit for them without them having to really be involved in building the experience and even the infrastructure themselves.

And I get it. I am not a tech person. My literal job for over a decade has been very rope-and-hammers, working with "tech" that's essentially over three centuries old. Everything I have taught myself about Linux, for instance, has been at the cost of a LOT of my personal time & frustration. So I do think that part of it is that folks who do know the tech and do build the infrastructure have become accustomed to being a sort of hidden or even ignored minority (numerically) compared to tech users. And that's real. And I do think that this requires a shifting of everyone's understanding of their roles in these projects.

But as a tech user, I am trying to recognize my responsibility towards learning more about how these technologies work, if I want to keep using them. I also want to call on the technologically-minded to recognize their responsibilities to teach and make knowledge accessible. This isn't unique to the high-tech world. Going forward, we all need to recognize our interdependence on a greater level, and change how we view the systems that we rely on. We can decide NOT to rely on some of them, for sure, but no decision we make about that is truly made in a vacuum. If we want things like the fediverse (or the internet in general) to continue, we need to understand that it can only be a cooperative endeavor.

Like I said, this goes for everything. Water. Transportation. Food. Shelter. But in the case of tech, we all have further to go to break out of the user/provider binary. At least to the point of understanding that if we want anything like a "free" and federated internet, we can't just ignore movements like the #fedipact as not being applicable to us. If you want a twitter experience, go to twitter. If you want a facebook experience, stay on facebook. Don't bring that shit into a project where we're all trying to learn how to break out of corporate control. This learning may not be easy for most, but it's necessary and if you're already here on the fediverse I don't think I need to explain why.

my favorite thing about the new updated more accessible version of https://fedipact.online is that, now, no matter which way you slice it, the colors of the page form some version of the trans flag

pink background, light blue highlights, black text, and white links

(also links are animated rainbows if you mouse over them, so, even more pride!!!)

Reminder to anyone who said "Meta wouldn't do anything to Fediverse, we should let them join!"

Meta is now automatically muting all posts that mention PixelFed, so it's users can't read about any alternatives to its services.

https://mastodon.social/@dansup/112126250737482807

Just remember, Every time advocacy groups warn about tech/capitalism, believe them. We don't make shit up, we use history of actions and facts to state our reasons to be against it.

If your instance isn't part of @FediPact please urge your admins to join or move to another instance who is.

And if you want proof, ask the general public what Jabber/XMPP was, and then ask what Google how they killed it.

EDIT: Please send support to the creator of the FediPact, @vantablack as she is homeless. This is possible because of them.

EDIT #2: Some peppe are saying it doesn't happen anymore, but since it only happened to competitors to Facebook and only after people noticed, I don't think it was a "bug" that only impacted FOSS replacements, but a feature for Facebook removed. Don't give these Zuckers gaslight and think they remain innocent.

y'know

if you'd asked me about making a tumblr-specific thing similar to the anti-meta fedi pact BEFORE the car hammer incident

i'd say i personally agree with it but that finding support across the wider fediverse might be a good deal harder than a pact against meta

because even though tumblr allows some of the same horrible shit, the vibes of the site are very different and lotsa peeps have good memories of it

but now... i could totally see myself doing FediPact 2 if tumblr ever announced they were gonna federate. public perception has shifted enough that it'd be doable

i think the most annoying thing about this whole discourse is that people refuse to judge threads by the standard of any other fedi instance

like if a mastodon instance got set up and federated right now and it allowed the shit threads allowed it'd be widely defederated IMMEDIATELY

there are accounts literally CALLING FOR THE DEATHS OF QUEER PEOPLE on there right fucking now

the only reason people are even willing to give them a chance is because it's a big corpo, but that should only be reason to give them less of one lmao. especially considering meta's history in particular

don't let them lower the bar for moderation standards here

MAKING THE FEDIPACT WEBSITE MORE ACCESSIBLE

some accessibility concerns with https://fedipact.online have been brought to my attention and i'm working on addressing them. more specifically, the readability of the color contrast and the animations

i wanna put a button on there that flips the text and background colors, making it hot pink on black, and disables the animated floating hearts (they're already disabled if the user has "reduced motion" on)

i just... don't have the web design skills necessary to do so lol. BUT someone else is working on it!!! so it should be fixed and better soonsies

thanks to everyone who pointed this out :heart_cyber_pink:
