Something created in 1989 that changed how people used , viewed then-nascent #Internet had nearly vanished by 2024. Nearly because dogged researchers, enthusiasts at The Serial Port channel on YouTube have found what is likely the last existing copy of #Archie. Archie, first crafted by Alan Emtage while a student at McGill Univ in Montreal allowed for searching various "anonymous" #FTP servers around what was then very small web of unis, researchers, govt military nodes. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/05/archie-the-internets-first-search-engine-is-rescued-and-running/
Archie, the Internet’s first search engine, is rescued and running:
A journey through busted tapes, the Internet Old Farts Club, and SPARCstations.
It's amazing, and a little sad, to think that something created in 1989 that changed how people used and viewed the then-nascent Internet had nearly vanished by 2024.
🧵 …nun gibt es auch einen Artikel auf Deutsch zum obigen Thema. Vor Google gab es einige Suchmaschienen davor aber die hier erwähnte, war die erste im Internet.
»Das war die erste Suchmaschine des Internets:
Archie konnte FTP-Webseiten auffinden. Das Programm galt als verschollen, wurde nun aber wieder entdeckt und in Gang gesetzt.«
Yesterday Salt Lake City Police held a "Coffee with Cops" event at a Starbucks in downtown SLC. The goal of these events it to 'connect with the community', which would be much harder if they told people their backstory.
Two of the officers there were responsible for the killing of Nykon Brandon in August 2022. Brandon was an unarmed (he was in only shorts) homeless man who Fisher Brewing called the police on even though he had already left.
We're up to 40 cops identified from the University of Utah encampment attack!
Pics like this one are extremely helpful! That "TY146" is a badge number. From this we were able to determine that Cameron Berg with Taylorsville PD was among the assailants. Now that that's documented the community will know FOREVER to look out for this dangerous pig who likes attacking college students!
tweet from NYPD Deputy Commissioner, Operations Kaz Daughtry @NYPDDaughtry: "#HAPPENINGNOW: An incredible scene and proud moment as we have assisted @CityCollegeNY in restoring order on campus, culminating in raising Old Glory once again on their campus flagpole. 🇺🇸" There's also a video showing 3 cops attaching an american flag to the flagpole.
On the #UTAustin campus, activists hold up names of students and educators killed in Gaza, along with facts about the damage war has done to education.
Protesters followed police off campus chanting and confronting them. Students chanting "fuck you fascists!" at the departing cops. #ftp#Palestine#Texas#UTAustin#Austin
Thanks to a new interview with his brother we now know that Cameron Cloward, who Salt Lake City PD killed 14 days ago, was autistic. No amount of 'training' or little puzzle pins on their lapels will fix this.
Cops are killers and are violent enforcers of the status quo. If you dont fit in, they'll kill you too. Whether your autistic, in a discriminated group, or a even a rowdy worker organizing your peers, THE COPS ARE YOUR ENEMY.
What platforms were used in the 80s up to about 1993 or 1994 for Internet servers? It can be #FTP, #Gopher, #telnet, #USENET, the #OldWeb, or anything else that was on the Internet in that era.
My research indicates Solaris was very popular for web servers until Linux took over, and so I suspect it (and SunOS before it) was very popular for the Internet in general, but I'd like to hear from anyone with this sort of experience.
One guilty pleasure i have is scanning for FTP pub's like it's 1999 from time to time.
nmap has a built in script for this ( --script=ftp-anon ) (use polite timing, of course)
There's nothing quite like finding a trove of infinite depth hidden behind a seemingly innocuous set of a handful root folders.
Today I stumbled upon ftp.zimmers.net which has a huge trove of #retrocomputing software, manuals, schematics, firmware, magazines, etc,... (check out /pub/cbm), and a fittingly amazing accompanying website, http://zimmers.net/
Have you been harassed by police and eventually got a police report? If so you have valuable data that we would love to publish!
In many police reports the officers have their names associated with their badge numbers or serial numbers. In the attached example we can see that SLCPD Officer Deven Meyer is badge # Q65
If you have this information we would love to have it as cops regularly operate under their badge numbers to avoid having their name be public.
The fact that feminism is still being treated as unnecessary and intrusive by the majority of the world (including MANY people right here in the 'land of the free') makes me want to punch the patriarchy in the throat. And I'm a pacifist.
The officers then subjected the victims to a “mock #execution,” which ended when #HunterElward mistakenly shot #MichaelCoreyJenkins in the mouth, lacerating his tongue & breaking his jaw, acc/to federal prosecutors. Though Jenkins was bleeding, the officers failed to provide medical aid & instead concocted a #coverup story that included planting a gun on Jenkins & destroying evidence….
Jumping back into #PowerZone training; it’s been a few months since my first #ftp so I’m curious of the current levels. Doing the German #peloton courses this time to ensure love is equally spread. #cycling
