#ESA's legendary Earth Observation satellite ERS-2 will re-enter the Earth's atmosphere during the next few days. 🛰️ 🌍
ERS-2 was launched in April 1995 and operated for 16 years until 2011. At the end of the mission, the remaining fuel was used to bring the satellite to a low orbit that would ensure re-entry within ~15 years.

@levampyre True but things are also getting better these days. #ESA has initiated their zero debris charta and is trying to get other countries to join, too.
And in the US, new #FCC regulations since 2022 require satellites to deorbit 5 years after the end of mission operations. If you can't prove that for your satellite, you are not going to launch with SpaceX or any other US launch provider.
The satellite mission I am working on will also adhere to these regulations.
