Today in Labor History February 25, 1941: The outlawed Communist Party of the Netherlands initiated a General Strike in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam in protest of the persecution of Dutch Jews. It started one day after a pogrom in Amsterdam. 300,000 people participated. It was the first public protest against the Nazis in Europe. The Nazis brutally suppressed the strike, ending it after three days.

Very m specific announcement but if you're moving to the Netherlands don't believe people who say that it's useless to learn Dutch even for a few years. It's not. People in shops are kinder. You get to do small talk and jokes. You will get more invitations. Dutch people I met were really annoyed people didn't even bother with basic greetings. Something I've noticed lately in my #Duolingo lessons in #Dutch -- I'm often totally focused on the grammar and spelling, not the vocabulary. So I'll be able to form and spell the required sentence, but I'll often have no idea what some of the key words mean, even though I've been studying them for several units. It's more like, "okay, subject, auxiliary verb, direct object phrase, main verb, and we're done".
