A very early take on #DollyParton .
This was when I was just beginning to learn to use Illustrator. It looks so primitive! Sadly, I can't find my original files for this. I have so much work that's been lost to flood, fire, corrupted hard drives and disc rot. But Dolly (& my love for her) has always been a constant in my art!
This was inspired by Dolly's take on ELUSIVE BUTTERFLY.
Maybe I will re-draw this; I know I can do so much better now!
Another early take on #DollyParton , when I was still learning Illustrator. Again, the original file seems to be lost to the ages.😔
Inspired by Dolly's song DADDY, COME AND GET ME. Sometimes, I crack myself up!
I gave Dolly a print of this when she was making an appearance at TOWER RECORDS to promote her LITTLE SPARROW album. She thought it was hilarious and was surprised that I knew her old, old songs. She slammed her hand down on the table and insisted, "I'm keepin' this! I AM KEEPIN' THIS!"
I drew this after her show at RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL. By this time, i'd learned (the hard way) to backup my orignal files in multiple places and multiple formats!
This is my favorite of my takes on #DollyParton .
I love all eras of Dolly, but late 70s speaks to me most. I feel I've come closest to communicating her spirit here!
🎧 In the Fall of 2021, #LilNasX covered "Jolene" on #BBCOne. It's a brilliant genderfuck and #DollyParton loved it! She heard he'd recorded the song, found this performance online and tweeted the clip...
"...it's really good. Of course I love him anyway. I was surprised and I'm honored and flattered. I hope he does good for both of us. Thank you @LilNasX"
He learned that news live on a podcast: "Wait. I'm emotional. I get emotional." 💖
Legendary musician and philanthropist Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has provided millions of free books to kids in the United States and abroad, and now all Illinois children ages 5 and under can participate in the program thanks to a new partnership with state officials.
Way back when I was in high school, 40+ years ago, I had an English teacher who liked to say stuff to shock us, challenge our preconceptions.
When I first met him, he liked to talk about his abiding love for #DollyParton. To us kids at the time, she was mainly just a punchline for big boob jokes.
But he loved to talk her up—sexy, smart, great voice, built herself up from nothing, etc. I'm sure he actually meant it, but always a bit melodramatic, to mess with us.
