#Movie: Restore Point (2023). Big-budget slick near-future techno thriller about a backup and resurrect technology with several contrived plot-serving limitations. Grade: OK.
#Czech#farmers are joining an international protest against EU agricultural policies, specifically the #europeangreendeal and the economic impact of cheap Ukrainian imports.
Today in Labor History February 11, 1938: BBC Television produced the world's first ever science fiction television program, an adaptation of a section of the Karel Čapek play R.U.R., that coined the term "robot." He derived the word “robot” from the Czech word for forced labor by Serfs. R.U.R. is an archetype for many of the science fiction stories and films that followed, like Bladerunner, West World and Terminator, and others about robots, replicants and hosts that rebel against humans. However, “R.U.R.,” like Čapek’s 1936 novel “War with the Newts,” is also a satirical critique of totalitarianism, which was already on the rise in Europe at the time he wrote the play.
#EU / Prague, Budapest hold up EU move to sanction violent Israeli settlers
Efforts by the European Union to impose sanctions on Israeli settlers attacking Palestinians in the West Bank have been stalled due to objections from #Hungary and the #Czech Republic. The two allies of #Israel blocked the sanctions proposal in an EU committee meeting, with Hungary saying now is "definitely not the time" for such measures.
@DrALJONES let's not forget that the #czechs contributed to this as well, with some saying that without #czech support, Israel would not exist today. This is where the unwavering Czech support comes from I guess.
The #Czech state administration has set an end-date for supporting IPv4: June 2032. After that state administration services will only be available over #IPv6. I guess this gives ISPs there eight years to get IPv6 deployment from ~18% of end-users to 100%! https://konecipv4.cz/en/
As you probably know, Radagast¹ is a character from #Tolkien's "The Hobbit", but... How many of you ever heard about Radogost²?
In #Russian folk tales, he's son of Koljada, the goddess of the New Year.
In the #Czech Republic, "radlo" means plow, which is often related to other figures, as Kurent³, connected with fertility. The plow, in fact, was needed to make the earth fertile.
Radogost was also called "The Hospitable One" or "The Peacemaker".
In XVI and XVIII centuries there are writings that describe his statues with a bird spreading wings on his crown, or his head.
A head of a black ox was on his chest, supported by his right hand; and his left hand held an axe.
Wikipedia has an accurate drawing of this figure, the only difference is the axe, which is a spear. Neat!
The Czech government just approved a resolution that on June 6, 2032 (20 years after first IPv6 day), it will end the provision of
government services over IPv4. #ipv6#ipv6only#czech#government
Today in Labor History January 16, 1969: Jan Palach committed suicide by self-immolation in Prague, Czechoslovakia to protest the Soviet invasion that ended the Prague Spring. Prior to his political suicide, he sent a letter to several public figures demanding an end to censorship and an end to the Soviet propaganda paper, as well as a call for a General Strike to meet these demands. His funeral turned into a major protest against the occupation. Several others also committed self-immolation in the coming months.
