Without celebrating the climate progress that we've made we send a signal to young people that we've not been trying to address the problem and that's a problem.
Already, the rollout of clean generation, led by solar and wind, has helped to slow the growth in fossil fuels by almost two-thirds in the last 10 years. As a result, half the world’s economies are already at least five years past a peak in electricity generation from fossil fuels.
"Cycling is one of the most sustainable and healthy means of #transport that exists, yet cycling remains under-prioritized in the mobility mix in most places around the world and in the wider #climate agenda.
For almost an hour this morning in the midwest of the U.S. almost 2/3rds of our electricity was being produced from #wind power (which is actually a form of #solar power I'd like to point out but that's besides the point).
This is real, tangible #ClimateProgress and more concrete results of our efforts over the last decades that should give you #ClimateHope
Signs of collapse and signs of an ecological society emerging coexist right now, in my opinion. The news covers the scary parts, and we need to know, and not look away. But lets not miss the little shoots of a saner more connected ecological-social-economic system either. What's a hint of a life-sustaining society emerging you've seen of late?
After experimenting with cheap public transport last year (a monthly ticket for ALL local transport in Germany was only €9 for 3 months, yes, subsidized) we now have the DE-ticket, which covers ALL local traffic for €49 in subscriptions.
Many people are using it to shift from cars to buses or trains.
My town has started using E-buses and has shifted the local small ferries to E-Boats (and the fare is included in the DE-Ticket).
In a short thread on #ClimateProgress I'll start out with this new polling for what it's worth.
A Cox survey found that 51% of American consumers are now considering either a new or used EV, up from 38% in 2021.
Actual adoption rates that reduce GHG pollution are more important than polling results is what I mean by "for what it's worth", but regardless it's a good sign.
I know that the timelines of most people that are concerned about our #ClimateCrisis are filled with stories of doom and gloom, but there are many of us working towards #ClimateSolutions
With a nominal CO₂ capture capacity of up to 36’000 tons per year when fully operational, Mammoth is a key milestone on Climeworks' ambitious scale-up plan of reaching multi-megaton capacity in the 2030s and gigaton capacity by 2050. https://climeworks.com/news/climeworks-mammoth-construction-update-jul23
My friend @BuildSoil is #fundraising for his small but mighty 501c3, Build Soil. In case you aren’t familiar with him, he’s a landscape ecologist who calls for practical, greening #ClimateAction and thinks in big systems! He is a wonderful educator and source of #ClimateHope.
Build Soil’s first big project is a distributed push to plant edible chestnut trees in communities worldwide! I am growing trees to give away and I’m one of the volunteers that helps with the org’s yard nursery :)
#ClimateDiary i am posting this article here now - about #Drought in #Germany, where #Water loss is amongst the world’s largest. But i am finding it all difficult just now. Week on week, day after day hard-hitting #ClimateNews - it’s getting to me and i am not sure how good it is to keep on posting all this. Will try and focus on #ClimateHope for a bit if I can
