Happy Frankenstein Friday! I wanted to draw your attention to the 1957 "The Curse Of Frankenstein" movie (based on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein novel).
Peter Cushing plays Baron Victor Frankenstein and Christopher Lee, who played opposite each other in many oldschool horror/Hammer films, plays Frankenstein's monster.
A film where Christopher Lee performs real ceremonial magic techniques should be a shoo-in for our Classics of Pagan Cinema, right? Not so fast, writes Meg Elison, who reviews the 1968 film “The Devil Rides Out” and finds it not just flawed, but repellent.
I'm getting on. Hundreds of years ago, when i was young, late night tv movies in Straya frequently featured a slew of fabulous old 60s/70s B-grade Pommy horror films, v often featuring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Vincent Price &/or John Carradine.
Today when i saw this [serious] news headline, my mind's eye swapped over the first two words, & thus took me right back to those fun / corny nights of yore.
So glad I caught this brilliant little exhibition at The Horse Hospital! Flesh to Touch, Flesh To Burn! Don't Keep The Wicker Man Waiting! 50 Years of The British cult horror film.
I particularly enjoyed seeing the stop-motion figures from Radiohead’s 2016 video for Burn The Witch, a Trumpton homage to Summerisle’s seasonal activities.
Oh, vale #AlanArkin. He performed so many wonderful roles, but I’ll always remember him best for the weirdness that is The Return of Captain Invincible.
Is it good? Well…probably not. But it’s a camp musical superhero parody from 1983, a fascinating piece of Australian film history, and also stars #ChristopherLee with #GrahamKennedy as the Australian PM!
Plus I was quite excited to discover it was a Pratchett Family Movie when I read the official #TerryPratchett biography.
