They're making announcements at Jack London Amtrak station that there's a system wide delay (I don't think 🤞 my train is affected) that because of a stuck drawbridge, wondering where that would be. also this is the closest I've ever been to missing a train (other than the time we missed our stop and were carry-bys).
Getting ready for my first Amtrak trip in five months, wake up at 4:30, everything's on schedule - 10 minutes later alert that there's a disruption. Call Amtrak and talk to a fantastic agent who is reading the notes in the system to me, powerlines down across tracks north of Chico and PG&E does not have a bucket truck available for a few hours so as of now it's a 3-4 hour delay. This is train travel in the US.
For years I've wanted to go to #Chicago and do a tour of #streetfood / #workingclass food entirely by bike. I also want to explore the inland waterways.
I'd love to take my own bike via #amtrak from NY, find a place to stay, and GoPro the whole thing.
I've started my map. That's always the first step.
Welp, one day out for #AmtrakWestern2023 and Train 1 (Albuquerque-LA) is already delayed getting out of Chicago, while Train 3 (Emeryville-Denver) is delayed three hours more than a week before departure... #amtrak#trains
"#Amtrak’s $ 75 bn plan to dramatically expand #PassengerRail service could transform #US train travel — if states agree to get on board.
If the vision were to be fully realized, it would bring passenger #rail to almost every major city in the #US in 15 years. (Right now, only half are directly served.)
The next-generation equipment will be brighter and more spacious, with amenities like power outlets, USB ports and reliable WiFi service."
Ha, it was better to be on the Southwest Chief this morning than on the I-40, Amtrak sailed on through Flagstaff without any issues, while truckers are stuck on the I-40 still. #AZwx#Arizona#Amtrak
Ruby Canyon 🌄 along the Colorado River in Colorado. This canyon is only accessible by rail or water according to the conductor. This is the first canyon on the eastbound leg of the California Zephyr. #Colorado#Amtrak#CaliforniaZephyr#TrainTravel
Hey people in Washington State, have you written to WSDOT to ask them to revise their Amtrak Cascades long term plans to include faster travel times? Comments close on April 18, so please write now!
I registered for the Five Boro(sp) Bike Tour in NYC this spring. I like trains and I've never done that trip via rail before so I booked that. It was the same price as flying but I figure I get more bang for my buck out of the train. I get a whole extra TWELVE HOURS OF TRAVEL for the SAME PRICE. Listen. MY LOGIC IS SOUND ON THIS OK.
Anywho. I found a Japanese Youtuber who did the route and now I'm even more excited.
The all-electric VanHool motorcoaches used on the Amtrak Cascades connecting bus service between Seattle and Bellingham, which can do the nearly 200-mile round-trip on a single charge, are super quiet and comfy.
Today in the Traveller section of The Sunday Age (Melbourne), I write a guide to catching Amtrak trains across the USA. Pick up a print copy to read it; it's not online yet, will share when it is.
Good morning from Iowa aboard the California Zephyr! This is the last day of the trip. We woke up in Nebraska, crossed the Missouri River and soon we will cross the Mississippi and head to Chicago! Follow along, ask questions, and see my prior posts for more. #amtrak#traintravel
Crazy morning. Had to take a car to amtrak this morning; there was an accident just before we got to the bridge which added ~45 minutes and I almost missed my 🚂 !
I was wearing my SF City FC scarf and my driver was very excited by it. We started chatting ⚽️, luckily he was from Oakland and knew all the shortcuts, so I got to the station about three minutes after the train and boarded it with a couple of minutes to spare!
I am taking a train from #seattle to #eugene right now. A woman just boarded in #salem#orgeon with her grandchildren, and they all have a sense of wonderment about our (pretty average, honestly) #Amtrak car. She does the math in her head and tells the kids that she has not taken a #train OF ANY KIND since 1979. What a day to be alive and here.
