When I think of how large an ActivityPub node should be, I think about each node as a city or town. For instance, Mastodon.social/online is more like the #Dallas#Fortworth#metroplex; they're big and hard to keep safe for the public. In contrast, Urusai.social, Sakurajima.moe, and Miruku.cafe are like small towns (Dumas, Sunray, or Cactus, TX are small towns in my neck of the woods); they are relatively easy to cover ground and keep their citizens safe. I don't know what instance would be like my hometown of #Amarillo, TX, but I doubt it would very safe because Amarillo has a very troubled past few years.
