smlavine, to archlinux

Hi, I'm Sebastian.

Online: I lurk around #tildeverse and #sourcehut folks on #irc. I use #archlinux btw, and maintain a few packages on the #aur. I like programming in shell, C, Go, and #harelang.

I play #chess, NES #tetris, #tf2, and #minecraft. Sometimes.

In real life: I hang out with my school's student theatre club, the RIT Players. I like #improv, #cycling, #racquetball, #transit, and traveling. I love my family.

Sometimes I write on my blog: https://smlavine.com

#introduction :)

ATTENTION ARCH USERS!
The AUR is experiencing malicious packages, please hold off on installing AUR packages unless needed. The things affected are:

  • login data
  • filesystems nuked

update: the user who reported this seems slightly untrustworthy, i will look further
update 2.0: after further investigation thankfully the pkgbuilds look safe (they reported unityhub), probably a false alarm thankfully

Trying to get a fully functional #MozillaVPN on #ArchLinux has been an interesting (read:hair pulling) experience. Maybe someone can point me in the right direction because both the #AUR and “normal” packages are outdated. I’ve tried the Mozilla GitHub repository and well.. I’m not sure how to compile this stuff.

I am learning tonight that the Google Play store is/was a paragon of robust security

kkarhan,

@jerry Are you shure the person claiming that is sober?

Cuz whilst #GooglePlay does delete #malware when it's obvious malware that doesn't make it more or less secure than say if #AUR or #MicrosoftStore had a $25 #paywall on account creation.

I love it when Arch package maintainers move packages from the AUR into the official repositories only to not update them as regularly as the AUR maintainer did. Sigh! :blobono:

Use #firefox based browsers. Please.

MsDropbear425,

@odddev Oh, i should clarify this. If bells & whistles are your desire, pls ensure you install the "Stable" variant, & avoid the "Lightning" one. That latter one is crazy IMO; the Dev ripped out LOTS of the goodies 😱

My real :floorp: in my :archlinux: :kde: :plasma: #ArchLinux #KDEPlasma Host, is that full Stable one, & it's fabbo. I did first explore it in some VMs before i changed my daily browser from :firefox_nightly:, & some of those experiments included using the #Flatpak version [i usually avoid FPs]. If users try to install FP Floorp via their distro's GUI app manager [eg, Discover in KDE Plasma], it only offers the sad sorry stripped-down Lightning variant. So, anyone determined to use FP, needs to install it via the FP website, then opt for the terminal method... coz that then lets you choose which of the two variants you want.

In my Host Arch, i just installed it as a regular #AUR pkg. I love it!

Good luck.

Hey @a I just wanted to say thanks for the quick reaction updating the mastodon #AUR package after the last two security updates. ✌🏻

It helps me a lot. I thought you would want to hear that. Good job.

Man, the longer I have :nixos: #NixOS and :manjaro: #Manjaro running in parallel, the more annoyed I am by the :archlinux: #ArchLinux way, e.g.:

· Python update ⇒ all python-based #AUR packages must be rebuilt. #pipx-installed packages also need reinstallation.
· separation between distro repos and AUR is anoying. 'yay -Syu' (or whatever) never really works in one go (be it some stupid sudo prompt later)
· so many AUR packages don't build reliably or at all.

I seriously don't get how a popular distro as don't have or on its repositories.

This is why I don't use distros without a user repository.

People get pedantic insulting users, but truth is you can find anything on (arch user repository)

Anything that doesn't exist on the oficial repos, users can upload it and maintain it.

@fell@ma.fellr.net avatar

I need some advice with a decision about self hosting.

Situation: I got a handful of websites and mail accounts as well as a Mastodon instance, a Conduit Matrix server and a bunch of other small utilities on my old server. I used Plesk to manage all this before, but now my old provider is charging a Premium for Plesk, so I'm migrating away.

Option A: My first idea was to ditch any sort of management tools and configure everything myself. I would make use of the Arch Linux AUR where possible to help with keeping everything up-to-date.

Option B: I gave YunoHost a go and I've been impressed with the amount of supprted software as well as its performance and reliability. It would be a big help, but I'm worried it would end up making things more complex since it's based on slightly-outdated Debian 11 and installing applications currently unavailable on YunoHost might require dirty hacks.

Note: Some of you might suggest containers. That is an option, but I'm not going to use Docker and make myself dependent on a commercial product again.

@linux Sharing a 'small' inconvenience I had to fix with (I suspect is the same) - I couldn't launch snaps (spotify, bitwarden) after update - error was: cannot determine seccomp compiler version in generateSystemKey fork/exec /usr/lib/snapd/snap-seccomp: no such file or directory

The fix (I first tried re-installing, didn't work) was to:
a. locate snap-seccomp - was in /usr/libexec/snapd
b. symlink: ln -s /usr/libexec/snapd /usr/lib/snapd

thegreybeardofthetree,

@pastermil @linux the attack surface for something that isn't officially maintained by the developers, and that doesn't have more vetting (e.g. distribution packages) opens up room for malicious actors.

e.g. / recommends verifying scripts manually before installing, and malicious scripts have been found and removed.

There are actors like out there. An unofficial needs manual verification before install - that's why I just go with if the flatpak isn't official

A minor update to this #XPPen Star G640 #DrawingTablet review on #Linux:

I mentioned the only minor gripe I had using it was that while it worked out of the box - if you're on a dual/more monitor setup, the tablet surface will interact with the entirety of all of your monitors instead of just your primary monitor. This was a non-issue on my #SteamDeck setup since I only use a single monitor for that. On my main #EndeavourOS/#ArchLinux based PC though I do use a dual monitor setup with it. The good news is, if you do use a dual monitor setup or more, there's an official driver by XP-Pen you could install from the #AUR called xp-pen-tablet.

I installed it, restarted my PC, and now the XP-Pen Driver UI utility starts upon boot and through its nice GUI, I was able to easily configure the tablet to only interact with my primary monitor instead of both my monitors. For a cheap lil tablet to have THIS working THIS well on Linux, I couldn't be happier 😭 There are other configuration options I could tinker with in the app such as setting the pressure sensitivity of the pen, or what the buttons on the pen are binded to, but I just couldn't be bothered and really only needed this. Big W XP-Pen.
