@linux Sharing a 'small' inconvenience I had to fix with #opensuse#slowroll (I suspect #tumbleweed is the same) - I couldn't launch snaps (spotify, bitwarden) after update - error was: cannot determine seccomp compiler version in generateSystemKey fork/exec /usr/lib/snapd/snap-seccomp: no such file or directory
The fix (I first tried re-installing, didn't work) was to:
a. locate snap-seccomp - was in /usr/libexec/snapd
b. symlink: ln -s /usr/libexec/snapd /usr/lib/snapd
@pastermil@linux the attack surface for something that isn't officially maintained by the developers, and that doesn't have more vetting (e.g. distribution packages) opens up room for malicious actors.
e.g. #arch / #aur recommends verifying scripts manually before installing, and malicious scripts have been found and removed.
There are actors like #jiatan out there. An unofficial #flatpak needs manual verification before install - that's why I just go with #snap if the flatpak isn't official
So, like many #GameDev#programming folks, I'm doing a bit of saturday work from home to support the project as it is getting closer to release.
Since my home desktop is primarily a #Linux system, I decided to try and see if I could compile a #Windows game without Windows.
Short answer: No. I could not.
There is actually an #AUR package that gives you a working #MSVC compiler in #Wine, but there is no way to get #MSBuild to work to build .sln and .vcxproj files.
I wonder how much worse the build time would be in a VM 🤔
I recently tried to compile #CDE desktop env on #ArchLinux using #aur. I wanted to play with it out of nostalgia (we had CDE on some machines at university).
No dice, I always run into a compilation error somewhere half way through #makepkg 😩
Man, the longer I have :nixos: #NixOS and :manjaro: #Manjaro running in parallel, the more annoyed I am by the :archlinux: #ArchLinux way, e.g.:
· Python update ⇒ all python-based #AUR packages must be rebuilt. #pipx-installed packages also need reinstallation.
· separation between distro repos and AUR is anoying. 'yay -Syu' (or whatever) never really works in one go (be it some stupid sudo prompt later)
· so many AUR packages don't build reliably or at all.
...
World is an interesting place. I reported a bug in #BioArchLinux regarding a build issue of their #AUR. In that thread, a certain member of the project kept attacking me that this is a #Manjaro bug and it does not happen in #Arch. Their defense was that it builds nicely on our CI.
I showed them that this is an issue on Arch and all Arch-based distros because end user is not a freshly installed Arch with chroot. Ultimately then banned me from their repo.
Trying to get a fully functional #MozillaVPN on #ArchLinux has been an interesting (read:hair pulling) experience. Maybe someone can point me in the right direction because both the #AUR and “normal” packages are outdated. I’ve tried the Mozilla GitHub repository and well.. I’m not sure how to compile this stuff.
I need some advice with a decision about self hosting.
Situation: I got a handful of websites and mail accounts as well as a Mastodon instance, a Conduit Matrix server and a bunch of other small utilities on my old server. I used Plesk to manage all this before, but now my old provider is charging a Premium for Plesk, so I'm migrating away.
Option A: My first idea was to ditch any sort of management tools and configure everything myself. I would make use of the Arch Linux AUR where possible to help with keeping everything up-to-date.
Option B: I gave YunoHost a go and I've been impressed with the amount of supprted software as well as its performance and reliability. It would be a big help, but I'm worried it would end up making things more complex since it's based on slightly-outdated Debian 11 and installing applications currently unavailable on YunoHost might require dirty hacks.
Note: Some of you might suggest containers. That is an option, but I'm not going to use Docker and make myself dependent on a commercial product again.

While updating my #AUR packages I saw a weird diff in the openssl 1.0 package. It has a patch which is changing a ton of certificates! Among them are 20 private keys!! Is this normal? Is this safe? :
Back to #Arch#Linux btw, I tried #NixOS, but I was defeated by one single app that I use regularly. The problem is not the OS, it's this old RSS app fault that is not maintained anymore.
This app is in #AUR and I tried to install/compile it twice, but got problems:
First time my terminal said "interrupted by the user" and I was not even at my desk
Second try my computer froze around 46% in the compilation process, had to force shutdown
I wonder if there's a way to get the #aur working on #fedora. It's possible to install #pacman & #paru using #dnf and #cargo respectively, and after doing
pacman-key --init
pacman-key --populate archlinux
it's possible to get it to start installing.
The problem you run into is dependencies. Pacman can't use dnf pkgs as deps & tries to doubly install things, conflicting with the files of dnf pkgs.
I wonder if there's a way around that. Would be cool to play around with.
With so many corporations that choose distros that use RPM packages, I have always wondered why DEB packages became more widely available. Today, even Arch Linux AUR is more widely available, as are binaries packed in archives.
ChaoticAUR is quite nice. Helps when needing to install binary packages the quick way.
Not everything from the #AUR is prebuilt of course - but the most used stuff is there. 😎
blendOS v4 has been released! #ArchLinux made #Immutable, #Declarative, and Atomic. Define your system with a single YAML file ('/system.yaml') supporting packages/kernels/DEs from the Arch #Linux repos & #AUR.
