Who is your most creative character?
Definitely the minstrel, Shawmelle. She sings, plays a lute and writes her own songs. Her father was a minstrel, as well, and was the one who taught her to play.
She's also very lucky, in that one of the kingdom's squires takes a liking to her. 🙂
Fantasy need not be epic! My first fantasy is out now. The Tyrant of Spite is a light-hearted novella with coming of age and romance themes. Nothing epic or grim, I went for a very light touch with a little magic.
I designed the cover using a licensed image from Tithi Luadthong (@grandfailure on iStock) and Photoshop. This wonderful illustration inspired the story.

Ja serio nie rozumiem polityki cenowej wydawcy i księgarzy. To dość frustrujące, zachęcać ludzi do kupna za prawie cztery dychy, a parę dni potem się dowiadywać, że empik robi promkę. Nie bijcie, nie wiedziałem, że tak będzie.

I am the best at apologizing. I am so incredibly humble, more humble than anyone else. But I am never really wrong on anything, so it doesn't come up too often. But when I do, I express sincerity like no other, and everyone accepts it instantly. I am an expert in managing my own ego. It never gets in the way. My ego is the best ego a person could have. It is very well crafted.
What I like is the unexpected creativity. Various characters are raised to be fighters. The men in the kingdom are solely applauded for their martial skills, so I like it when Lazarus writes poetry while commanding an army, Dionysus draws funny animals as he is competing in a tournament, and Sabre, who was raised to be an assassin, uses his shadow magic to illustrate bedtime stories for his daughter.

Freya loves the glass coral reefs that line the coast of the Enta province. They're full of nearly invisible, shiny ghost fish that are equally fascinated by her.

You'd think sticking to silhouettes would make it simpler, but my stars, it's complex to get the essence of a character into just an outline! It's fun, though.

o wolności? Na drodze jej pragnień stanie wkrótce porucznik Derek, jeden z najemników w cesarskiej armii, dwoje wróżeczków, uzdrowcielka Milezja oraz inne, niejednoznaczne postacie. Każda z nich niesie swój własny sztandar.

A teraz zajrzyjmy za kulisy:
Powiedz lepiej, dlaczego nazywają cię „gospodarzem” — rzuciła niespodziewanie. — Bo pieniądze się ciebie nie trzymają? Bo za co się weźmiesz, to spaprasz? Czy coś innego? Głowę sobie nad tym łamię i nie wiem, naprawdę nie wiem.
— Coś innego. Zwierzyłem się kiedyś chłopakom z marzenia. Niepotrzebnie. Nieważne.
— Ależ mów, chętnie posłucham.
Zawahał się, uciekając spojrzeniem w bok. Czekała cierpliwie. Wreszcie skapitulował.
— Chciałbym… Chciałbym wrócić do Kortazeny, do Werdels, do mojego Kociegomłyna. Kupić kawał ziemi, postawić na niej dom. Zamieszkać tam z piękną żoną, zresztą, niech nawet nie będzie bardzo piękna. Chciałbym uczynić ją szczęśliwą. Chciałbym mieć gromadkę dzieci, wszystkie zdrowe. Założyć rodzinę, którą sąsiedzi by szanowali: mnie, moją żonę, moje dzieci. I żyć spokojnie, dostatnio, nikogo już nie krzywdząc, i żeby moje dzieci, i dzieci ich dzieci, także żyły w spokoju i dostatku, szanowane przez sąsiadów, kochane przez małżonków. Śmiejesz się?
— Nie. To bardzo… Bardzo niezwykłe marzenie. Jak na najemnika. Ach, a ta żona… Rozumiem, że w tej roli chciałeś obsadzić mnie?
— Tak — odrzekł spokojnie.
"Sztandary Imperium" wspólnie z Witoldem Dworakowskim już w czerwcu!
Jejuniu, jakie to proste, płaskie i szablonowe. Książka (a raczej seria) na pewno ma potencjał, ale tutaj brakuje szlifu i dodania jakiejś ciekawej głębi czy choćby wyjaśnienia pewnych elementów świata. Mam wręcz wrażenie, że to takie "tanie" fantasy. Czyta się nieźle, ale do zapomnienia. A wstęp mówiący o połączeniu kryminału i fantastyki to jakieś nieporozumienie.
@Aegewsh@ksiazki Zastanawiałem się tutaj nad 3/10, ale jednak dałem czwórkę - czyta się to dobrze, tylko po prostu nie jest to cos, co chcesz powtarzać + widać problemy literackie. Natomiast nie jest to gniot pokroju kilku książek, które miałem nieprzyjemność już czytać, a które np. starały się szokować, nie oferując nic więcej.
@brandonwrites for real. And I'm not gonna go nuts on stuff I MIGHT find at thrift/Goodwill haha. It happens. But they're often beat to hell with crap all over. Ones like these three are CLEAN, wow.
Zapominając o tym, co wypada, a co nie, Anna złapała za ramię przechodnia i od niego dowiedziała się tego samego. Kapitulacja. Senat złoży hołd temu wypierdkowi demona, Kentemu, zgodzi się na wszystkie warunki, zapłaci trybut. Miasto otworzy bramy, a jutro urządzą ucztę dla wrogich dowódców. Po siedemnastu latach ziemię w Kjumorei znowu będą plugawić stopy magów i bezbożników.
Anna ze zdumieniem stwierdziła, że jest podekscytowana.
Magowie, a więc i wróżeczki. Wróżeczki! Zobaczy je znowu! Będą latały po mieście, bawiąc się wśród gałęzi drzew, przysiadając na oknach, a ludzi będzie brała cholera, będą krzyczeć i tylko bezsilnie płakać ze złości. "I dobrze", pomyślała zachwycona. "Tak! Dobrze! Dobrze im tak!"
"Spokojnie, panno de Lontrain". Absolutnie-nie-czarownica Anna nie może się cieszyć tak straszną klęską jedynej prawdziwej wiary. Co powinna zrobić wierna i lojalna, pobożna Anna?
— To straszne — wyjąkała i przytuliła rozpłakaną Radunię. — To okropne! Musimy natychmiast pójść do świątyni Jos’helia, pomodlić się i złożyć ofiarę!
"A jutro, gdy pojawią się magowie i wróżeczki… Jos’helio pewnie będzie palce gryzł ze złości", pomyślała z radością.
Dawno nie miała tak znakomitego humoru.

Really enjoyed The Bone Harp by Victoria Goddard. It diverges a bit from The Lays of the Hearth-Fire series in that it's more abstract and set in a different world. The language is lyrical and free, with a lot of alliteration, pleasant, like a lullaby -- it's definitely a slow burn, if you like that (I do).
I really enjoyed the sprawling sense of imagination and the thoughtful details woven throughout the story.
"There were weavers who learned to capture the sky into impossible fabrics, so the people went garbed in sunsets and moonrises, in the blue of a mountain morning, the starry field of a winter midnight. There were glassblowers who created bells and bellflowers as delicate as Klara’s hoarfrost, gardens of glittering jewels where there had never been aught before but stone."
"Someone caught the winds in jewelled nets, and created symphonies of storms over the mountains. Someone sang the city into hills and towers, plunging pools and hanging gardens, and then spun bridges at dizzying heights between them."
Victoria Goddard has become one of my favorite fantasy authors. The Hands of the Emperor is one of my favorite books (it is about found family, empathy, kindness, being a foreigner/outsider). Her writing is a balm for troubled times and worth returning to time and again for solace.
