impactology, Why isn't edtech thought from this lens - novel pedagogy invention?
Why always just in terms of LMS, linear video lectures with quizes and tests or in case of india, digital cram school/exam prep
Why is it treated as something secondary to/supplementary to formal edu
John's question is exactly the kind of question you need to ask for edtech
Edtech isn't the problem, edtech that simply is a digital version of pedagogy used for "teaching to the test"/ exam oriented education is the problem.
Ideal #UI design project for me Speculating & conceiving of entirely new pedagogies via material properties unique to the computing medium, web, internet. Exploration of unique social practices of learning via computers that don't have an equivalent IRL Focus on online edu should be on using the medium's affordances to rethink pedagogies and bring one's that were not possible to implement IRL instead of just bringing that same soul sucking mindnumbing test-taking shit online
I want to see what new pedagogies can we conceive of, that aren't possible because of the physical limitations IRL but which aren't present on the computing medium, web & internet. I want to disassociate learning & teaching from big buildings, enclosed spaces, credentialism, exams, tests and the idea that it’s supposed to be done in fixed slabs
Jeremiah, I still think the swipe down from the right third to get to control center and swipe down from the remaining ⅔ to get to notifications is a terrible UX on iOS. There is no/little affordance to their behavior.
Similarly, I cannot tell you what tapping the digital crown, side button, and swiping up and down does on the Apple Watch Ultra. I just cycle thru all of them until I get the screen I’m looking for.
jhogervorst, @Jeremiah Agree about watchOS! 💯
However, on iOS I find it quite clear:
At the top right are your control icons (cellular, WiFi, battery), so swiping from there opens the control center.
At the top left is the time, so swiping from there opens your notification timeline.
Maybe they could reinforce this by disabling the swipe from the middle (or apply it to the Dynamic Island instead)?
Jeremiah, @jhogervorst I agree the control icons are a minimal affordance on iOS. Unlike WatchOS, I remember which place to swipe, but I often unintentionally swipe too far left when I want the control center. Big hand problems, I guess, but I think there should only be one swipe-from-edge gesture for any particular edge.

stshank, In MacOS, I often take a screenshot, right-click on the thumbnail that pops up, then select "Save to Clipboard." I've been doing this for years but still have to parse the words carefully. Why oh why doesn't it just say "Copy"? So much easier at least for my brain to grok. #UI
nyquildotorg, @stshank that should have been Paste with Formatting 🤷
nyquildotorg, @stshank huh, this was threaded weirdly in my mentions. Thought to was in reply to my bitching about pasting
ailyaut, Second blog post on the #moxxy UI! Unfortunately I've had a very busy month and don't have much new to report. Hopefully I'll have more time in May to work on new screens. #xmpp #penpot #ui

aeveltstra, I took some time today to learn how to make a trendline graph for statistics pertaining to 2 similar processes for one of my clients. This is created using #QlikView, a #dataanalytics visualizer by the #Qlik company. The #UI does not switch to dark mode easily: it takes a lot of tinkering to get it to look good. As far as #UX goes, Qlik can improve their application a lot.
aeveltstra, I just realized that this visualization won’t be insightful for most colorblind people. I’ll have to add symbolic markers.
jezlyn, I use the timer on my Apple Watch a lot. I find it frustrating that instead of pressing on the big “done” in the middle of the screen to stop the timer after going off, I have to target the small x button in the lower left corner, which because it is very near the rounded edges of the Watch’s screen, is even harder to target. 😒 (I just now saw the Done label isn’t even centered in the circle :smh:)

syntaxseed, I am plagued lately by websites that do weird #UI things & just lose all my typed comment.
Facebook's mobile website does it if I minimize my phone's keyboard.
#WordPress .com just did it when I typed a long meticulous comment & entered my name & email which it recognized as belonging to an account so it prompted me to log in. After I did so, I was returned to the blog post.... my comment vanished into the ether.
I just. It's so demoralizing.
syntaxseed, @otto42 That's definitely not it. It's on a vanilla Chrome on a mobile phone, no extensions. This is a UI development problem.
syntaxseed, @otto42 Facebook has also, egregiously made their mobile website buggy, awkward & limited on purpose to push users to the mobile app. 👎
This is a well-documented dark-pattern in web development.

"Surf the web like it’s 1999 with these old-school cursors"
TaxonWorks, We've long admired the Open Tree of Life (https://tree.opentreeoflife.org). Curatorial #UI, #UX ideas there are spiritual precursor to new work we're doing.
The concept is: filter a set of records, choose attributes of that set and display those columns.
Then the first step is to edit any value in place. But it gets more fun, with a regular expression in the middle of two attributes we can match and transform values between two columns, one at a time, or in batch. #dataquality here we come!
kagan, I can't believe the Mastodon web interface still doesn't have a theme that auto-adjusts to the system's light/dark mode preferences. It just has "Light", "Dark", and "High Contrast", none of which GAF about the system settings.
So when, to take an example that I'm currently experiencing, I go from being outside in a park to a dark bar and flip my system theme from light to dark, I then also have to adjust Masto independently. Unlike everything else. It's #BadUX, TBH.
bragefuglseth, @kagan support for this was merged very recently! Should arrive in a future update :)

Really? The delete happens before the user clicks save for the rewrite!? Some programmer needs to be forced to dogfood their own product. I think there is a special hell set aside for these people...

iamdtms, What is #heavy #UI? #microsoft #start it is!
hywan, Most designs I see for home automation apps are pretty but absolutely not convenient to use. It should be super quick to do an action, otherwise it’s better to just do it physically.
hywan, @ljouanneau @swallez It’s not just lights. It’s how you expose the data you need in a UI. If you need 3-5 taps to reach your data, it’s too long. 1 tap + 1 scroll, that should be that fast.

josh, Now, I'm not a SMART man, so if I'm wrong here, please tell me.
Look at the screenshot attached. This is the toggle for audio notifications in the SiriusXM chat widget.
If something says "Mute: On" I expect to not hear anything. The icon even indicates that the speaker is muted. I guess that what's before the colon is the state of Mute if clicked while after the colon is the current state of notifications, but that is not intuitive. Right?
technodad, @josh Using the mute should lower sound.
Mute: verb
- to muffle, reduce, or eliminate the sound of
- to tone down : SOFTEN, SUBDUE
janeadams, (edited ) My dad is having his first job interview in more than 30 years and hooh boy is there so much knowledge about video calling technology and etiquette that I just took for granted 😳 Like, I can't explain why, but calling into an interview in portrait mode feels so casual / unprofessional... but his computer is so old that the only usable webcam he has is an iPad, and landscape mode on the iPad means it's hard to look into the camera on the side while talking 🙃 Wish him luck! #HCI #UI #UX
jonathanmatthews, @janeadams Random idea: if he has access to a USB webcam and a USB-to-lightning adapter, he might well find that they Just Work together acceptably ...
janeadams, @jonathanmatthews Ohh interesting, I thought webcams were off the table, we might look into this, thanks!
