Catching up on the new Apple announcements, what do you think @yon

yon,

@chikorita157 Sounds awful to me. A bunch of idiotic suggestions that will be wrong and in the way AI junk. Yuck. This isn’t meant for me.

@yon does this mean your iMac made the cut for one more year?

@chikorita157 Mine is a 2019 so no I assume. That said I’m not on the latest anyways, there’s just nothing interesting added to new versions. MacOS just makes me sad:(

A studio would be great, but damn, MacOS needs so much to become good again.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 Windows is long dead to me, I can’t come up with a single reason for me to run that only anything I own.

But that said, I think an OS should be measured against its potential not its competitors. And MacOS could be so so so much better in so many ways.

Clear out the bugs, modernize, fix issues, finish the half finished stuff, fix performance issues, fix the things devs find are missing, make Xcode the best ever, etc.

Now that more people are talking about Itsuzumi, I guess it's time to discuss cat girl ears. I have cats and I clean their ears.

Cat ear holes are actually at a similar place as humans, their outer ear parts go upwards with large flaps and have muscles that allow the ears to point in different directions.

Drawing source and more details:

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 @anianimalsmoe I had to look at the dogs after reading this. My ears “holes” roughly line up with my eyes (give and take) while the dog’s ear holes are much higher up.

Looks like horse’s ears are even higher up.

And I need to watch that horse girls who race anime at some point :)

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@anianimalsmoe @chikorita157 The dogs are now refusing to cooperate, but they look quite different from the side compared to a retriever. Look up French Bulldogs/Boston Terriers (radar dish ears for days, so perfect for anime animal ears).

Going by your image there though I suspect that looks are deceiving and the inner ear is basically a lot further down than I thought about. The canal is steeply downwards compared to a human.

The more I learn, the less I know :)

I admit, I saw a Cybertruck when I was about to get onto the NJ Turnpike.

It really looks ugly. :neocat_facepalm:

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 It looks brutal, in the worse possible way. Like a suppressive police state in a shitty sci fi movie.

As a side note, read that the DeLorean was meant to be painted, but they chose not to. Something that they sent it from the factory like they are known to look and were meant to be painted as part of the sale or something similar. Could be malarkey who knows.

I just know I’d rather own a DeLorean, and I actually don’t want one (they aren’t good).

@chikorita157 Didn’t hydrogen cars end up being a tough sell? I know Toyota are hellbent on them, but I haven’t heard anything positive about them.

I’m not fond of big vehicles in general. But this is the worst of so many things. It’s dangerous, poorly built, and just all around dumb.

Extensive and good public transport would be a very good idea. I especially think we need far far more (electrical) trains and the Biden administration seems to agree with that.

It’s better for transport and imho better than airplanes for many cases.

Small EVs would also be a boon I think.

(Irony is that my wife’s SUV (Kia) actually has a better MPG than my Corolla while also having more HP. So the general rule is always, measure and monitor. Whatever proves better is what I support in the end, not a personal dogma.)

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@anianimalsmoe @chikorita157 That and one practical problem is that charging stations are being built out and there is a network in many places. If I got a hydrogen car I would have 0 places to charge it.

Fuel cells are cool (says everyone except the people on the Apollo 13 mission) and all. But there doesn’t seem to be any appetite for it.

I’m all for public transport, but I have got to say that it’s a much more difficult nut to crack over here. So little is built around it (with the exceptions of a few cities).

For example the light rail in the twin cities. Close to useless unless you live in very specific places, and created a big mess as it was really just an excuse to rewrite laws so development companies could build on parking lots.

Less parking lots less cars right? Just that the light rail just sucks too much to be a replacement:/

Which is why I think, in the case of the U.S., trains between cities would be a better start. Especially transports.

(Also boats! Outlaw cruise ships and tax transportation in big ships. Automate manufacturing and manufacture closer to the consumer. Those ships are dirty.)

(Caveat Emptor: These are just opinions, anyone who properly runs the numbers should be in charge.)

Oof, the SSD speeds are slower on the PowerCenter compared to my G4 MDD or even the G3 B&W. Might be because I'm running a Rage 128 on the same PCI Bus or maybe it's because of the slower processor and bus speeds.

Faster than any SCSI emulator though.

yon,

@chikorita157 I like how SSDs are quiet, that makes it worth it for me :)

If the accelerator card has memory on it, it probably can ran the memory at a higher speed which equals speed etc. No idea if that’s the case :)

Yep, it seems the studio that got caught of having scenes made from animators in North Korea was actually a thing done by a subcontractor. I wonder, how did this happen :bunhdthink:

@chikorita157 If there’s one universal thing is business it’s that driven sociopaths want all the money and any mean is justified for that end.

If I’ve understood it the connection to North Korea, for every single country in that region, is quite strange. China would much rather NK go away and nobody quite wants anything to do with them. I’d be very surprised if the majority of SK would not want to avoid a unification at almost any cost.

So I assume any work being done in NK is highly regulated. And I bet this wasn’t.

I feel sorry for most people in the entertainment industry. They are so passionate and want to entertain the rest of us. But so many of them work in such shitty conditions:(

Darn, it looks like the reduced ROM Radeon 7000 I flashed in 2015 doesn't work on an old world Mac. Time to find a Sun version of the Radeon 7000 to flash the full ROM, as it has a big ROM chip since it also support open firmware like the Power Mac..

I'm happy that Cara appears to be growing well, but their recent $13,500/mth for database bills just proves that they might be waaay over their heads.

The site is image heavy, and it looks like they're using... Cloudflare CDN, which is fine, but I worry that they'll hit the 'professional limits' and be forced to pay 'enterprise' rates, maybe that's why they got such a huge bill.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@anianimalsmoe @chikorita157 Even decentralized media grows quickly (video even worse).

Agreed, the buy/sell commission (etc?) part is the only one making sense. If they had launched that part and used pixelfed for the rest (including connecting to fedi and thus the rest of everything) I think they could be profitable.

AI scanning I think will become awfully difficult in the end.

I like the model of “little” extra services where a profit model makes sense while linking that to a distributed non-profit one.

Humane AI is apparently a fire risk.

No, I didn’t make this up, but not too surprising since it’s a garbage product that is looking for a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist.

Yesterday was crazy, there was a tornado warning that scared me, but apparenty there were reports of tornados, but nothing too serious besides some tree falling down. Thankfully, nothing happened where I live.

Yes, it’s a sign that people should take climate change seriously.

@chikorita157 I hear you. I’m in the middle away from coasts, but it’s super flat and we’re pretty close to a little river (aka the Mississippi…) so it’s not all roses.

Finally got the PowerCenter running, but sadly the Interware Booster G3 card might not be compatible. I got a new PSU installed

I have other G3 accelerator that is coming that might work, but I need one since there is no cache card, which impacts performance

Need to install ATI drivers for the Rage 128, but contemplating getting that Sun version of the Radeon 7000 if I can find one for a decent price as those can flash the full Mac rom.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 One can recap and fix old PSUs, BUT that isn’t easy (nor safe for noobs). So new ones are safer.

One could use those smaller (physical size) PSUs as well. Can’t remember the name but it’s same ATX variation for smaller cases.

Since one usually doesn’t need that many watts for older machines. My frankemiga does not need 450watts exactly:) Was worried it wouldn’t start because it didn’t load it enough.
