Nooooooooooo I got jury duty summons for 3 days after I get back from Japan :spyfam_anya_panic:

Can I just, like, share my social media with them ahead of time so they know I'm horribly opinionated and a terrible juror?

dean,
@dean@urusai.social avatar

@neatchee "I watched that CGPGrey video about jury nullification and thought it had some really good points"

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@dean you ever see the episode of family guy where Lois runs for office and discovers that saying "9/11" is the magic keyword that unlocks winning? That's what I'm gonna do but with "jury nullification".

@neatchee
Flying to Japan soon? :meowaww2:

Have fun over there!

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@anianimalsmoe yup! First time going ehehe. Super excited. Will be there from June 12th through 21st

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@neatchee Just wear a T shirt with Bernie and AoC on it and you won’t be chosen :)

I know the usual reaction is, no I don’t want to. Be it’s kinda scary that so much rides on juries.

Either way, good luck!

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@yon oh no, don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to be on a jury. I just know that the odds of being needed is low, and the odds of being chosen is even lower given my personality lol

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@neatchee Thing is, they have to choose someone or there would be no trials. I’m quite intrigued by the selection and what kind of people it is.

Jury trials are kinda scary.

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@yon yeah but something like 99% of cases never even go to jury trial. So many make it so the way through selection before being plead out just before trial.

I know what you're trying to say. I just know I'm very low on the list of the type of people lawyers want on a jury, for a process that almost never comes to pass anyway

ami_angelwings,
@ami_angelwings@urusai.social avatar

@neatchee @yon be like "I am going to be 100% impartial and fair, i'm perfect for this jury" and then they'll immediately be like "out" because you're too eager to be on the jury and it's sus

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@ami_angelwings @neatchee “My internal compass is all that matters”:)

It’s funny how there are so many stories on how to get out of jury duty in the US, and back home it was about how to get out of military service :)

(I was placed, so I didn’t pull anything. But I requested to push it into the future as I was in college, and then they just didn’t want me anymore :))

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@yon @ami_angelwings yeah there are a ton of ways if you really want to piss them off but I've heard that, if you make it obvious, in some cases they will keep you in the jury pool, rather than dismissing you entirely, until the last possible moment out of spite lol

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@neatchee @ami_angelwings Probably best to not do anything stupid, jokes aside. I’m sure one could get into trouble.

ami_angelwings,
@ami_angelwings@urusai.social avatar

@yon @neatchee yeah i'm just kidding

ami_angelwings,
@ami_angelwings@urusai.social avatar

@yon @neatchee use pokeballs

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@yon @ami_angelwings for sure, it's never a good Idea to screw around with the legal system over here. We're probably already on a list somewhere after this conversation lmao

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@ami_angelwings @neatchee Same here:)

It’s like the “get out of military service” stories. Some involved chocolate (I’ll stop there), others declaring your love for communism (I.e. the Soviets), and all sorts of stuff. Pretty sure it was mostly tales :)

That said one of my favorite punk bands disbanded because the bassist refused military service and got jail time. Worked out ok because they reformed into another band without him, and I honestly think he was just waaaaay too left for it to be a good thing.

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@yon @ami_angelwings oh to live in a country where being "left" actually meant being left, rather than here where it just means "not a fascist"

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@neatchee @ami_angelwings Hehe. When I say too left I mean writing songs like “we will arm ourselves” (not a metaphor, it’s clearly weapons) or “shoot a cop” (much more direct than Cop Killer, which made people upset here).

Dude was a full blown revolution communist.

And they wrote (and covered) a bunch of songs that criticized the social democratic government. Yes a whole party that got something like 60-80% of the votes filled with Bernie Sanders and AoCs.

I miss when the left cared about worker rights and moving towards post scarcity. They have completely lost their ways and yeah. I’m sad.

But we could use some left here. It’s a dream but I’m hoping that R falls apart and D grows to the point it splits into progressives and conservatives and we can get some basic sanity.

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@yon @ami_angelwings yeah that's what I mean though: I'd love an actual leftist party in the US so I could point at them and go "see? THOSE are the crazy left-wing people! I just want healthcare ffs!" XD

ami_angelwings,
@ami_angelwings@urusai.social avatar

@neatchee @yon that's what the smoke bombs are for

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@neatchee It’s kind of funny, I know more about the U.S. system than the Swedish one. But I was taught how the Swedish one works at school (no juries for instance), but virtually all my knowledge about how it works here comes from TV and movies.

I have a feeling that I don’t have a clear picture of the mundane reality. But as you say, at lot is low level stuff like tickets and such.

I must assume they want people that can sway. So I would probably be one of those people they chose, and one side heavily regrets it:)

I know that if I was a lawyer I’d ask “do you work with software, engineering, or science?” and chuck anyone that did :)

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@yon well, they don't do juries for tickets, but yeah, a lot of it's very mundane and incredibly procedural. Very few cases eligible for a jury go to jury selection. Even fewer go to trial. And even fewer than that go to a verdict. The overwhelming majority wind up with a plea bargain once it becomes clear how the case is shaping up.

I find the whole process fascinating. And I'm in the same position of being someone that is difficult to sway without data. You can't just put a reasonable idea in front of me and say "isn't it possible?" But more than that I have strong opinions and am honestly not sure I could uphold the law over my conscience

GgDionne,
@GgDionne@esper.lol avatar

@neatchee

I think it's pretty easy to get out of even if you give them a semi reasonable excuse. Not that I've ever been in that position or that I know how to go about it.

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@GgDionne mostly depends on the people handling it I hear. Some of them will rubber strap any reasonable excuse, others will want something they consider "important enough"

ami_angelwings,
@ami_angelwings@urusai.social avatar

@neatchee tell them you run a Fedi server and when they ask what's Fedi throw a smoke bomb and run away

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@ami_angelwings this is obviously the correct answer because it involves explosives in a government building
