I get that elves live in magical places, but I don't think Flamingos are the correct amazing animal for a lake in an elven forest. Unless someone can correct me on this.

"The flamingo's most characteristic habitats are large alkaline or saline lakes or estuarine lagoons that usually lack vegetation. Lakes may be far inland or near the sea.

A variety of habitats are used by flamingos: mangrove swamps, tidal flats, and sandy islands in the intertidal zone."

@anianimalsmoe Elves have been changed and modified over the years quite a bit. From old Norse (and probably Celtic and a few others) to what Tolkien wrote to all the other fantasy works.

So what the hell, flamingos it is:)

Still, it shows how important that infinite growth is not sustainable especially in a high interest rate environment. This is compared to what I am doing running our Mastodon and Firefish (Misskey) servers at Sakurajima.

I am using dividends and anything I collect from interest plus any donations I recieve to keep these servers running as a public service. There is no profit motive in running a Mastodon and Firefish server, I’m here to bring people here and build a community for Japanese media fans and creators to talk about Japanese media, culture, share creations, and socialize.

This is what pales in comparison to large social networks. They require a lot of infrastructure, SysAdmins, and developers to keep it alive. Also, ad revenue doesn’t bring in as much it does and VC aren’t giving money out like candy anymore in a high interest rate environment.

How much it cost to run Sakurajima used by a few hundred users monthly. Just around $65 a month, most of it covered through donations in addition to money I earn from interest and dividends.

Obviously, the Fediverse will outlive these big social platforms and even Bluesky, simply by existing. It’s pretty much the future, especially with more apps like WordPress supporting it. While there are challenges such as moderation and different servers having different rules, I think it’s more substainable.

@chikorita157 Http and the web was a pretty neat idea, wasn’t it?:)

There’s no money in social media. It’s why all the big social media companies are doing shady stuff.

@chikorita157 I still would love to see communities pop up, and ways to distribute communities.

Like Sakurajima, but with not just mastodon, but forums, wiki, chat, pixelfed, etc.

Then have those connected to let’s say Urusai so everything is shared (like forums).

Then focus should be on people, topics, and community.

Not on scaling, user bases, ads, selling personal information, monetization, etc. That’s madness afaik.

Basically we took a wrong turn, let’s wind back and create the future that could have been, should have been. Not just wind back.

(I still have forums the way they work now. I have ideas :))

Damn I’m still incoherent from the vaccines. It gave me a fever and cotton between the ears.

Anyways, small and distributed is better :)

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 I actually don’t know, I’d rather I can’t remember which one it was. I think it said when I booked it and then plum forgot.

But yes, both COVID and flu at the same time, same arm. Boom.

I’ve had different experiences each time.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@pkemner @chikorita157 Agreed. I see microblogging as fleeting. Part of why I don’t see the point of search. I’m not writing anything that’s worth anything later per se. Which a fine for the medium.

My issues with forums (or rather web forums) is something else. I like the forum (maybe subforum), post, comments in threads format.

I don’t like having different logins everywhere, a web interface (I’m one of those grump people that don’t like web apps), the fragility of it being a single server, etc. I think we can do better in many ways. Things like distributed.

But I haven’t seen anything I like (kbin etc was a massive flop for me).

I also think a single type of social media can’t rule them all. I think we need many different kinds in a nice living side by side mix.

But now I’m rambling again :)

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 @pkemner Well I have three grand ideas of a single identity one could use across many things. But not one tied to a corporation. But that’s a big thing for another day:)

I haven’t popped in to the forum in an awful long while. Hmm.

Back to Jujutsu Kaisen. Catching up.

For those who are considering utilizing the Wordpress ActivityPub Plugin or this functionality in Wordpress.com, it may not be possible to follow ActivityPub enabled WordPress blogs on Mastodon or any server that has Authorized Fetch enabled. WordPress's Activity Pub plugin does not have support for it, yet. Hopefully support will be added to it soon.

If you want to share your blog posts to your audience, consider setting up autoshare in addition.
https://blog.sakurajima.moe/about/setting-up-wordpress-autoshare-to-mastodon/

Don't know what Authorized Fetch does, you can learn how it works here:

Apple: 8 GB is the same as 16 GB on PCs.

That is bullcrap. Memory is memory no matter it’s unified memory or just regular old memory. Sure, unified memory is more efficient since the computer has to do less work for things that use the GPU, but if you have ton of Chrome tabs open, of course it won't survive on an M3 Mac with only 8 GB of memory and have the out of memory message, compared to if it had 16 GB in the first place.

This is Apple trying to justify selling their computers with only a stingy amount of RAM in 2023, when computers come with at least 16 GB at that price point Macbooks start at. I like Apple products, but this is just ridiculous.

https://www.macrumors.com/2023/11/08/8gb-ram-m3-macbook-pro-like-16-gb-pc/

#greed #apple

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 Unified memory means less overall memory…

8GB is a joke, I wouldn’t touch a 16GB machine. They are awful. 32GB is minimum for me.

Apple has been on this BS forever, and it’s less true today than it has ever been. Put more memory in there, lower the memory prices.

More and more of us has gotten tired of this. This is why I own a Linux PC now. Because I’m tired of Apple.

(How much memory it has? 128GB. And it was dirt cheap. Much cheaper than what Apple charges for a fraction of that.)

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 I do like Krita, even use it in MacOS. I don’t have more needs than that. I’m adobe and MS free:) (well sans the XBox, but it’s confined)

I find that KDE is better than nome (no, not saying it the other way), but its biggest massive flaw is using Windows as an inspiration. It really suffers from that.

Not that I’m trying to convert anyone per se. People have different needs etc.

Apple is selling luxury items. I.e. overpriced. I want premium products. More expensive because they are better, not so I can lord over others that I have the item.

I am not the target audience for the Framework laptop. Only drawbacks for me.

I’m back to being a desktop person. Like everything about it bigger to be honest. Fits me:)

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 Creating a desktop environment is really difficult, and open source is very much design by committee (and splinter groups).

No shade on open source, I very much get it.

I think what made MacOS and then OSX great was that singular gatekeeper that made sure things had a cohesive feel. It’s just so damn difficult to build something as big as a modern OS and not have it feel patched up.

(Nome I never felt like it was for nerdy power users, I just never thought it was good.)

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 Irony is that I think Apple is changing things around far far too much as is. :(

The start menu was, and always will be, dumb. I don’t like much at all about windows. I just avoid it.

Such a shame not more OSes survived. Was a lot of nifty ones in the past.

@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 And AmigaOS, and GS/OS, and IRIX, and NeXTStep (as opposed to being folded into Apple), and Solaris, and RISC OS, and OS/2, and some I’ve forgotten.

Not to mention regional OSes I wasn’t much aware of because the computers weren’t around. Like the OS for the X68000 for instance.

To be honest, Apple and Microsoft should really stop with the yearly releases. The OS releases keep getting buggier as companies are willing to ship OS updates out without proper testing because consumers want shiny new things. :leafeonmoney:

I doubt a week is going to make a difference.I think they really need to do a two year update cycle given the major OS updates only add a handful of new features every year and not as substantial as they used to.

https://www.macrumors.com/2023/11/07/apple-engineers-ios-18-bug-fix-focus/

#apple

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 3-5 at least. No need to push new stuff so much. In fact MacOS could do with five years of just modernizing and fixing stuff.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 IOS should have the same release schedule imho. And the reason for the quick releases was that their various OSes lacked really basic features.

Now we are getting change for the sake of change and gimmicks. To parade at WWDC. :(

Remember that I’m not saying any releases, but rather major releases. We are seeing point releases all the time after all. But those tends to be much more needed. Fixes, security fixes, etc.

APIs that’s needed for time sensitive reasons can easily be part of a point release. No new overall requirements, no weird UI change for the sake of it, etc.

Also apps can release any time. And so do hardware.

I just want things to be good, instead of what they are:(

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 I think Apple can sell just fine without messing with the dang core OS. Just put the silliness on an app level so I can ignore it. I can’t name a feature from the made 4 years or so I actually looked forward to:( A few I probably use, but I miss far more of what they have removed/ruined.

This usually makes a certain group mad as all can be, but I genuinely feel Jobs did these things far better. At the very least far more to my liking.

(Normal users don’t know the difference. New shiny is new shiny.)
(Am on 17, but it’s because new device:))

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 Jobs understood why they had a specific amount of time between releases. You do quick releases if you are behind, few release if you are ahead.

Apple is lacking leadership that leads. Now they are more your normal hot air company with a better pedigree. :(

Nadeshiko and Rin spends time with Aya, Nadeshiko's childhood friend. I find it funny how the JDrama depicts Nadeshiko when she was in middle school being a bit overweight from eating a lot of food, until her older sister, Sakura forced her to lose all that weight from biking. I wondered, how the JDrama will depict this scene from the anime/manga. While it looks kind of exaggerated, it doesn't disappoint.

What is surprising is that tents for dogs are pricy for what it is, at 9334 yen, or $62. But if it allows one to bring their pet. Still, it's funny to see Ena use a cute voice acting like Chikuwa to convince Rin into seeing it. Of course she can't resist, despite denying it.

@chikorita157 I’m very 100% touch, 100% mouse/keyboard, no mix. So stuff like the surface wasn’t targeted for me at all:) Never used one. Haven’t really used windows for a decade either.

I have a pretty decent iPad, but that has got to be one of my worst buys. I hardly ever use it and I don’t really enjoy it when I do. Not even for watching stuff. :(

Did get the hardware to use it as an HDMI monitor though. Thought it be useful to have a battery monitor I could use for random quick checks and such :)

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 My biggest issue in the end (apart from the multi tasking in iPadOS which I find the be directly and actively hostile as I’ve lost a bunch of data from it already. It’s beyond crappy and poorly made to its very very core.) is that the form factor doesn’t really suit me. I only use hand held devices by holding them, and tablets are just kinda unwieldy:(

It’s mobile or desktop for me:)

@chikorita157 I still think the software will make or break the Vision Pro.

Right now it’s a cool tech demo.

Will there be a few apps that takes it from that, to something you can’t get without a Vision Pro?
