Extreme G5 geomagnetic storm conditions tonight—if you have clear skies and you're not too close to the equator, look north! You might see the aurora. I'll be heading outside in a few hours 🤞

Let me ask a question.

If a PCIe nvme expansion card registers one nvme drive, but not the other three, which is more likely: the card is shit or the three drives are shit.

Note that the three drives do show up in lsblk, but show up s 0b.

I think I know the answer. But would like someone to say it to me

whydoesnothingwork,
@whydoesnothingwork@mastodon.social avatar

@thelinuxcast the most likely issue is your mother board either isn't set to or doesnt support pcie bifurcation

whydoesnothingwork,
@whydoesnothingwork@mastodon.social avatar

@thelinuxcast then swap slots in the card if no change, its drive if changes which you see then card

whydoesnothingwork,
@whydoesnothingwork@mastodon.social avatar

@thelinuxcast usually auto is fine but if your using 4x nvme I'd try 4x4 or 2x4 just to see if it helps

whydoesnothingwork,
@whydoesnothingwork@mastodon.social avatar

@thelinuxcast worste case your GPU would still work just with lower be but you should be able to see that in dmesg or something,

whydoesnothingwork,
@whydoesnothingwork@mastodon.social avatar

@thelinuxcast when you swap the disks does it show the same drive or the other one? If its same drive showing then most likely your other is kaput if it switched which drive shows then probably the card

Tonight's video is going to be pushed back to tomorrow.

Mobian is probably not going to happen. The PinePhone is just a POS, tbh.

Planned on a neofetch video, but no need to do that as it has been well covered today already.

Going through a period lately where it's just hard to come up with topics.

whydoesnothingwork,
@whydoesnothingwork@mastodon.social avatar

@thelinuxcast then do one on the state of linux on mobile devices and turn the PinePhone issue into an opportunity.

It's been covered before but i havent seen anything in a while, i found the librem 5 to be a better platform for tinkering with mobile linux personally btw

IBM to buy HashiCorp for 6.4b — should I post a hot take on the state of corporate tomorrow?

whydoesnothingwork,
@whydoesnothingwork@mastodon.social avatar

@geerlingguy i wonder if they changed their licenses because they knew this was coming, or if them changing the licenses is what made them IBM material

My first VM on my proxmox server. Found out though that my CPU doesn't support GPU pass through, which was a bit disappointing.

whydoesnothingwork,
@whydoesnothingwork@mastodon.social avatar

@thelinuxcast use containers for when you want GPU support its way better you can even have multiple CTS using the same GPU

it also let's you migrate between hosts if they all have similar GPUs

@nixCraft 'the fuck'

A few years ago, I would've said CentOS or Debian. Now, the answer is much easier

whydoesnothingwork,
@whydoesnothingwork@mastodon.social avatar

@geerlingguy NixOS a great choice, and for that use case specifically I have step by step tutorials its easier to manage and for a home lab the ability to roll back after messing around goes poorly is priceless
