Apparently even the European Data Protection Supervisor #EDPS , can't find the funds for it's mastodon servers. Which is bizar if you think about all the "talk" about not relying on #bigtech , a more independent EU, open standards, security, importance of reliable information etc.
#EU #EDPS #Bigtech #digitalEurope #fediverse #mastodon #privacy

tyil,

@ErikJonker Have they considered using more resource friendly #Fediverse alternatives than #Mastodon? There's plenty of choices available, and it seems pretty much all of them do a better job of staying relatively cheap.

The article also includes talk about #PeerTube, and hosting video is known to be rather expensive compared to hosting, well, just text and some images. It would be interesting to see more details on the costs and how it is attributed to each service.

Don't get me wrong... Microsoft's ability to block legitimate mail, allow spam through, AND still be a giant source of spam for decades is fucking epic. But Oracle is trying their best to compete. Lookout Microsoft, there's a new jackass in town!

tyil,

@jmhorner When it comes to spam sources, I don't think anyone can beat #Gmail

tyil,

@jmhorner I can't come close to over 2 decades of self-hosting my own email services, that's a long time.

I see Google as the go-to service provider for burner emails on pretty much any platform I have hosted, ever. Spam accounts are nearly always using some @gmail.com address. Microsoft simply loves not delivering your mail in most circumstances from what I can tell, even though their servers accept the mail itself just fine.

In actual spam messages reaching my servers, I can also see Google providing the majority. But I don't come near your experience with hosting email, and I likely have much fewer people using my self-hosted email service to begin with.

Might be interesting to get some proper statistical insight in how incredibly obnoxious the big email providers are in general, especially since they make email harder for small providers in the name of combating spam.

tyil,

@jmhorner

rDNS, SPF, DNSWL, DKIM, DMARC, and SNDS

I had to go through all these hoops too, but only for the big providers. Regular email servers are generally happy without most or sometimes any of that extra work.> SMTP has NOT gotten better over the years!

I don't think SMTP itself will ever change, but I wonder how in your experience we could/should improve SMTP, or any other ideas on how to improve the protocols or ecosystems used in email.> services like Mailgun and Sendgrid

They're horrible, but they're too prevalent to apply any sweeping measures against. Lots of companies I order from use it for their verification emails too, for instance, which is a little sad.> IP reputation

I don't like the IP reputation system in general, IPs are too volatile to be a reasonable means of identifying who's sending something. I think the worst part is that most people seem to never "forget" the reputation assigned to a particular IP, even though the addresses aren't nearly as static as they were back in the day. If I want to get a new IP on my server I can do that in a minute or 2.

aylamz, to foss

The "apolitical", "we should just focus on the code!", "FOSS is not political", "inclusivity is discrimination!" people need to get kicked out of FOSS projects. Fuck off with your "apolitical" nonsense.

#FOSS #FreeSoftware #OpenSource

tyil,

@aylamz Just imagine, instead of ranting about politics here you could've written a patch to actually improve a FOSS project. Keep your shitty ass dumb political agenda shenanigans away from people trying to have fun working on their little projects. Go start a political party if you think you have such big political aspirations.

tyil,

@amszmidt I think they can work on FOSS just fine, I even tell them they could've been working on FOSS right now. If you want to just do political stuff, then it makes sense to do that on the political theater to me, rather than just ruin FOSS for everybody who doesn't ascribe to their particular agenda.

We've seen plenty of times on all sorts of platforms how it hurts communities when politics are introduced, most often through codes of conduct. And so far it has never made a community better, or improve the code it writes.

I am very much in agreement that people with diverging, conflicting opinions can work together on FOSS. What the OP is doing here is not working together on FOSS, he's actively trying to stir up drama which will eventually help nobody. That is something I do strongly oppose, and I do think he should take that elsewhere.

Boy do I love .org having issues again. It just doesn't feel like a truly modern replacement for things like if it were stable and usable.

tyil,

To add insult to injury, the few messages that came through inbetween the near permanent "connectivity to server has been lost" are not able to be decrypted.

tyil,

@dwarf I can, its Matrix. So long as it sounds negative, I can definitely believe it is something Matrix does!

tyil,

@fabio The USA has spent almost all of its vetoes supporting Israel's violent oppression of Palestine, I'd be more surprised if they suddenly stopped. They have to support their allies after all, they can't be the only ones using excessive violence against unarmed minorities in the world.

FUCK TAXES DUDE

tyil,

@dwarf Taxes are even more fun when you're a millionaire, the better you do the more money the government will actually pay you to become even more rich!

tyil,

@Hyolobrika Well since I own a house I just get (part) of my interest of the loan back every year. Now that the peasantry is starting to get into the housing market they're obviously reducing that amount of money you can get back, but I still get over 1k per year for this.

Imagine if you own several homes which you rent out (which is taxed a whopping 0%), you get people to pay you money every month to do your entire loan + interest + a "little" extra, and then the government drops by every year to reimburse you costs you never even paid by yourself to begin with.

All you need to be able to do this is be rich and an asshole. I heard the latter part of that comes naturally if you've acquired the first.

tyil,

@Hyolobrika

The loan you took out the buy the house?

Correct. The system is called "Hypotheekrenteaftrek" in Dutch. Beautiful word, really.> Why does the government do that?

I'm told to incentivize people to buy a house, but in order to get a loan that's high enough to buy a house you need to be quite high on the income ladder. Its near impossible if you don't have a partner to co-sign on the loan currently, and then you'll still both need well paying jobs.

Micro-posting (a la Mastodon) apps offer an interface optimalised for short text and image posts, which seem to work better for chatty exchanges than for fruitful long form argumentation. Yet most of us have fallen for the temptation to let casual chats become friendship-ending arguments.

What if we could tag a reply as "debate" - or the author could - and it greyed out the reply button on that post. Obviously this would be a setting that can be toggled on and off.

#FediverseIdeas

tyil,

@strypey Being unable to say anything in response to one's argument doesn't sound like a "debate" to me, that's just going to be abused thoroughly to ruin people's days.

If your friendship ends with someone over a silly post on a social media network, I'd argue it is better to simply find better people to be friends with.
