Been tracking down a mysterious behaviour of a couple of Ikea Trådfri bulbs in our setup: at seemingly random times, unprompted by any automation or other obvious trigger, they turn on at very dim brightness. Logbook simply shows “turned on” without any additional context as to what did it.

Now I’m at the point where I’m trying to create an automation that captures this event and turns the light off, which I’m fine with if it works, but would still love to know why it happens.

Getting to geek out about old & delicious Mac OS X UI styling with @marioguzman and watching him just magically incorporate them into modern apps is such a treat. Give this one a go, it’s quite special. Brushed metal everything!

@daringfireball Wacom tablets have had this for decades so shouldn’t be too hard for Apple to do it too.

Before the Picards settled on their chateau in France (and famously took to the stars as we know), they ran a small but successful family business in Vienna, Austria, selling security doors and locks. #startrek

One of the aspects I’ve enjoyed the most about moving homes so far has been to design bespoke 3D-printable things for the new place, such as fittings for cable management and a light fixture with hanging lamp cords for the dining table.

I don’t often get to do honest-to-goodness industrial design at work, so it feels good to flex that muscle a bit for personal projects.

tuomas_h,
@tuomas_h@mastodon.social avatar

Today I finished my custom light fixture for the dining table. The “base” is 3D-printed and it can move freely within about 30 cm circle to better match the position of the table. Inside is a Zigbee dimmer so that I can use simple dimmable bulbs (where there’s a lot more variety) instead of smart ones.

And why five bulbs? It’s simple, really. Anyone can buy a fixture similar to this with three bulbs, but I wanted to have a “cloud” of them. Four looks weird as an even number, so five it is.

@jonhendry @joshua @marioguzman They’re your typical iPhone lens flares for light sources, so thankfully nothing to worry about 👻

I don’t want to read your blog posts or emails you didn’t actually write. I don’t want to talk to hallucinating customer service chatbots. I don’t want a TV to “enhance” the picture based on what it thinks I’m watching.

ML/AI has legitimate and cool use cases, but the stupid “AI all the things” gold rush needs to calm down. Those computer resources are better spent elsewhere, or not at all.

The temperature widget for Apple Weather is not able to show double-digit low and high negative temperatures at the same time.

Designed by Apple in California where there’s no winter.

tuomas_h,
@tuomas_h@mastodon.social avatar

Apparently it isn’t always the low temperature that gets truncated out of existence on iOS Lock Screen. Today it only shows the highest temperature.

tuomas_h,
@tuomas_h@mastodon.social avatar

Finally got around to sending FB13529804 to Apple about double-digit negative temperatures causing layout issues in iOS Lock Screen temperature widget, instead just bitching about it here.

New hobby: reporting scam ads on YouTube. The more I report the more I get.

Usually footage of Elon Musk or a TV clip paired with a “how to get rich fast” voice over. Usually made by “companies” in Hong Kong or Eastern Europe.

This is so disturbing and disgusting. I’d be fine skipping real ads but I only get this shit. Is this a tactic to get me to buy YouTube Premium?

tuomas_h,
@tuomas_h@mastodon.social avatar

@getflourish If it’s a platform where you can do adblocking, do it. You shouldn’t need to pay to not be presented with scam ads.

Apple Music Replay is pretty embarrassing and FOMO-inducing when you put Spotify Wrapped next to it. Yet again.

I’ve seen many share their Wrapped on Instagram. Apparently one of the slides has a burger of the genres you listened to. It’s crazy and I love it.

Upgraded my work Mac to Sonoma. I haven’t yet noticed many improvements but I have noticed things that seem to either get worse or at least not any better:

System Settings is still a flaming dumpster fire where options are just randomly sprinkled into long lists.

And because we apparently didn’t complain enough about the yellow privacy dot in the menu bar for microphone access, there’s now also a giant orange box with a microphone icon in the menu bar whenever any app uses an audio input.

With this “pay or see ads” choice that Meta is giving their users (including myself), they keep drumming up how ads are valuable and helpful for users to discover new brands and products, almost as if people will miss out and have a worse experience if they choose not to see ads.

I don’t know about you, but during the time I’ve been seeing ads on Instagram, I haven’t seen a single one that I was actually interested in. None of them have made me go “I’m glad I saw this random brand in my feed”.

tuomas_h,
@tuomas_h@mastodon.social avatar

Am I just out of touch because the primary and pretty much only function of Instagram for me is to see pictures from people I follow, not to discover new brands and products or do shopping? Do people actually go there with the intention to do these things?

Idk why I bought AirPods Max. They just sit in a drawer and I’ve used them probably collectively all of 5 listening hours.

I hate that they don’t have an on/off button. So much friction putting them in their case.

My Sony WH-1000XM5 I can just press the off button and leave them on my desk. Easy. Simple.

Waste of $550 on the Max.

tuomas_h,
@tuomas_h@mastodon.social avatar

@gn @marioguzman They have a few different power saving modes, one kicks in after 5 minutes and another after 72 hours when not in the case, but they will never go into the ultra-low power mode outside of the case, and even in the case they only do that after 18 hours.

Irregular update on my 93 y.o. grandmother's situation with regard to being able to use any modern device:

It's still impossible.

Try to listen to audio books in a hospital if you can't see well and screens don't work for you.

Try to use devices that require "normal" button presses, but your finger tips are too numb to register the button's bumps or tactile feedback.

~89.7% of the devices are touch-first or touch-only. The rest is also unusable.

You know what still works?

Tape decks.

tuomas_h,
@tuomas_h@mastodon.social avatar

@ctietze We had one with an iPod 30-pin dock connector that actually sent control signals to the iPod based on the movement of the spindles. It worked pretty well.

tuomas_h,
@tuomas_h@mastodon.social avatar

@ctietze Pretty sure we bought it from Apple’s online store. It was a long time ago, in 2006 or so. If that’s the case I might be able to find it in the GDPR data dump, their online order history only goes back 18 months.

Microsoft Word is 2,36 GB on disk on my M1 work Mac. That’s twice the size of the entire hard drive of my first laptop.

You can’t tell me a word processor has any justification of consuming so much storage space. It just bums me out how careless big companies are with their apps. They think disk space is free.
