thesystemisdown,

Pizza Hut prompted me for a (minimum) 18% tip on a take out order. I could see tipping for takeout if it’s a large, complicated order, but this was not. 18% is for standard table service.

Can I refuse MS Authenticator?

So my company decided to migrate office suite and email etc to Microsoft365. Whatever. But for 2FA login they decided to disable the option to choose “any authenticator” and force Microsoft Authenticator on the (private) phones of both employees and volunteers. Is there any valid reason why they would do this, like it’s...

thesystemisdown,

I think if that’s the case, I’d get an inexpensive phone with a prepaid plan… and make it clear that it gets turned off if not on call or otherwise pre-arranged.

thesystemisdown,

I’m a developer that has done a lot of work in the higher education and finance sectors. Sadly, the ‘G’ in WCAG is ‘guidelines.’ It doesn’t have teeth; there is no legislation around WCAG. I say ‘sadly’ because there really should be a solid legal framework for ensuring equal access to resources, not just loose guidelines.

The largest movement around the ADA and WCAG was about seven years ago. There were a fair amount of lawsuits brought forward against banks and credit unions since they are federally insured and regulated. Higher education was also targeted as they accept federal money. The gist of it was that the owners of the sites in question did nothing to make the sites compatible with assistive technology like screen readers or even basic navigability needs. I don’t think most of the suits were successful. They did succeed in focusing attention on the topic.

If you want a good idea how compatible a site is, this tool is excellent; but not perfect: wave.webaim.org

Organizations are increasingly farming out ADA compliance to companies like AudioEye (www.audioeye.com). AudioEye might be considered a bit pricey, but worth it when viewed through lens of it being a lot less expensive than addressing a law suit. It’s also less expensive than finding a developer that has accessibility skills on top of all the other inflated technologies that recruiters cram into a job listing.

thesystemisdown,

That’s good news, thanks. Hopefully it will gain even more momentum.

thesystemisdown,

Half assed audiophile here. I only have two ears. I just want clean and balanced. Two channels is just fine.

thesystemisdown,

The article cerement linked indicates it was likely a live broadcast.

thesystemisdown,

It was fucking delicious, but I think I started to hallucinate.

Kindred spirit, my friend.

After announcing increased prices, Spotify to Pay Songwriters About $150 Million Less Next Year (www.billboard.com)

When Bloomberg reported that Spotify would be upping the cost of its premium subscription from $9.99 to $10.99, and including 15 hours of audiobooks per month in the U.S., the change sounded like a win for songwriters and publishers. Higher subscription prices typically equate to a bump in U.S. mechanical royalties — but not...

thesystemisdown,

Oh and Deezer pays even less to artists than Spotify.

I don’t think that’s accurate. Care to provide your source?

thesystemisdown,

I’m trying to wrap my head around the CTO writing code unless it was from long ago when they were a developer. If that is the case, the CTO should understand that a better or more performant solution is likely over time. I’d say that was a bullet dodged. That’s very poor executive behavior.

thesystemisdown,

I was just thinking today that this will never go away. I then realized that this ideologic poison has existed far longer than I have, and will sadly exist much longer than I will. I’m not sure what to do with that other than always stand up when I can, do what I can, and hope for the best. We have great potential.

thesystemisdown,

The headline gives far too much attention to Trump and buries the lede. If there is another Republican president, they will be expected to toe the line. This is the initiative of Project 2025. This is the Republican playbook.

thesystemisdown,

That’s exciting news. I wonder if there is a gain in energy efficiency given the shorter duration.

Why PHP Usage Has Declined by 40% in Just Over 2 Years (thenewstack.io)

In conclusion, it is easy to see PHP in 2024 as the forgotten child of web development, while JavaScript is the most popular kid in class. Sadly for PHP, its decline in usage is unlikely to stop any time soon — why would it, when WordPress developers are busy adapting to a new JavaScript paradigm? But at least there is active...

That article makes little sense. There is not a non-php version of WordPress at this time. I know Gutenberg uses Node and NPM, but the heavy lifting is still PHP. There has always been client side scripting and server side scripting with WP. I’ll buy that devs are lobbying clients to use something else, but to say this is because WordPress is driving the change can’t be right.

thesystemisdown,

DuckDuckGo primarily uses Bing results, mixed with a few other smaller sources. Kagi (paid) uses AI, but in a way that benefits the user, not the advertiser. They were an early adopter of AI.

thesystemisdown,

I can’t believe I’m saying something positive about them, but they keep about 6,500 guns off planes a year. Irrespective of thoughts on gun control measures, I think most would consider a gun on a plane a credible threat.

thesystemisdown,

They will do whatever they think they can get away with or afford in the interest of maximizing profits. Many believe that it is their primary responsibility to the shareholder.

TIL about the 'River' effect in typography (en.m.wikipedia.org)

In typography, rivers (or rivers of white) are gaps in typesetting which appear to run through a paragraph of text due to a coincidental alignment of spaces. Rivers can occur regardless of the spacing settings, but are most noticeable with wide inter-word spaces caused by full text justification or monospaced fonts. Rivers are...

thesystemisdown,

Rivers caused by justified text are bad for those with dyslexia and present a website accessibility issue. Good developers avoid allowing users the option.

If I stood up a website with the logo of the company I work for and published a bunch of politically charged lies, I’m pretty sure they’d fire me. They would also quite possibly sue me as to discharge any liability on their side.

thesystemisdown,

But there was good news, too. Pesticides presented little to worry about in nearly two-thirds of the foods, including nearly all of the organic ones. Also encouraging: the largest risks are caused by just a few pesticides, concentrated in a handful of foods, grown on a small fraction of US farmland. “That makes it easier to identify the problems and develop targeted solutions,” Rogers says

Among a long list of other things, he took action on day one of his presidency to pause student loan payments. There’s of course reason to be critical of him or any other president, but this isn’t it.

whitehouse.gov/…/fact-sheet-president-elect-biden…

thesystemisdown,

Fair enough on the poorly phrased part, but Biden followed up with a $400 billion debt relief program in 2022. The Trump appointed Supreme Court blocked it. 2022 was not a presidential election year.

thesystemisdown,

By that logic, initiatives are always affected by an election year. An election of some variety is always around the corner.

The SCOTUS ruling didn’t happen until June, 2023. The president does not set the Supreme Court’s agenda.
