Also I didn’t see the post, but it sounds like it would be against the community rules.

“Do you compress files, if so why?” would be a discussion question

“Help me fix my file compression problem” would not be

You could try and run both

Keep whatsapp, and slowly switch contacts to Signal (it might just be close friends and family). That’s what people around me are doing

otter,
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

It’s definitely not for everyone. For me it’s

  • some use signal with me / others exclusively, sending the occasional message elsewhere when on a certain device or sharing within a platform
  • some use signal for sensitive conversations, and use other platforms most of the time
  • some just don’t. If I need to have a sensitive conversation with them, I do it in person

It’s on my list of things to explore soon 😄

Nope it’s not, but that would have been my recommendation as well

I agree… no wait a minute

This would probably work great most of the time. One worry I had when exploring NFC tags was if the tag gets lost, or you are out of home and forget to skip the alarm

With barcodes/QR you can generate one on the spot if you know what the original one was. Some people just have a thing for the word “barcode”

Example

I guess you could always uninstall the app or force shut down the phone

Protecting user content and data on Lemmy

I see talk here and there about how any company or individual can easily use anything we post on Lemmy however they want. This could include AI training, behavior analysis, or user profiling. With the recent news of Reddit data being sold and licensed for AI training, I thought this would be a great time to preemptively discuss...

otter,
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

I think there are two big things:

  • No one can sell the data when it’s already freely available for everyone
  • Only the data that needs to be collected, is collected. Only the data that needs to be public, is public.

Pushing for these points to remain true should help a lot.

On the first point (pretty sure I also posted about possible licenses at one point), the problem is that it doesn’t really help anyone that doesn’t care about the license. Until we can collectively organize to defend our licenses legally, the next best thing might be to remove the profit incentive entirely.

On the second point, this does away with a LOT of other metadata (ex. Location, device orientation, contacts, etc.) that won’t be available for abuse. Reddit killed off third party apps because they want people to use the official app. Part of that was for ads, but part of that was ALSO to collect more data. If we build the platforms and the clients in a way that the data isn’t collected, then we’ll be better off

Amazing

Although I read it as “befriend the houseplant mobster”

Some communities on here are pretty close

The mander.xyz communities for example

OC Any EU based users of reddit should immediately file a complaint under GDPR with their supervisory authority for the sale of their data to Google to train their LLMs

reddit is telling it's future investors with recent news and more info on their IPO, that they're currently selling and looking to sell their user's data to companies wanting to train their LLMs, including Google....

This would be worth crossposting back to the other site, where a lot of the users would be

If it goes down, that’s more the reason for people to look into alternatives.

There’s also the streisand effect

otter,
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

There was a post earlier today with an explainer on who is doing it: lemmy.ca/post/15935073

I’m not sure why this particular instance was chosen, but from what I can tell the spammers are doing it for the memes anyways.

The best you can do for now is to keep reporting them. What you can also do is see if there’s a pattern, such as one instance popping up more often than others. Chances are that instance has open signups or something, and lemmy.world (and everyone else) should defederate

Opportunity to educate potential users about the fediverse

With the advent of Reddit going public and selling user data an opportunity has arisen. I still consume Reddit from time to time and noticed in the threads about these things that a lot of displeased users were there. But when they ask what alternatives there are, lemmy is barely mentioned at all. So if you’re still on there,...

If we do, we should probably do it well. Otherwise the ads would just be annoying

Investors will say “OK Boomer” to aging Reddit | Reuters | Ghostarchive (ghostarchive.org)

NEW YORK, Feb 7 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Social media platform Reddit, which helps its users “dive into anything,” may finally plunge into the public markets. The 19-year-old company made over $800 million in sales last year, at least 20% more than in 2022, according to Bloomberg. But a dearth of profit this late into its...

I don’t like it when the archive link is the main link because I can’t tell what the source is without clicking it. In this case, it broke the site entirely

Here’s the original:

reuters.com/…/investors-will-say-ok-boomer-aging-…

Archive links are cool, but they have the potential for spam and trickery. Just put them in the body of the post

otter,
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

Yea no problem, and thanks for caring a lot about it :) appreciate it

It’s a pretty minor thing in the case of your post since, as you said, people can access the link easily after. That’s how I got the link I commented.

The format I prefer seeing is

  • Link: Original article link
  • Body: whatever content you want to include + archive link

The main advantage is that a lot of apps will use the link to generate a preview image, and sometimes put the base domain. When the archive link is used, there is no preview image and the base domain is the archive site, offering much less information.

So if someone wanted to spread articles from a bad site, people wouldn’t see that it’s from the bad site until they clicked and opened the post (which not everyone does). You could also put a title saying it’s from a news site (ex. Reuters), but actually put something awful in the actual link. Without a preview, people won’t be able to skip it. Also if you know you don’t like a particular site, it’s harder to block it if it’s hidden behind an archive link.

It’s basically all the same issues with the URL shorteners, which is why shortener domains are blocked in a lot of places.

As for the broken site, it is on my end but it’s likely affecting other people with a similar setup. I get this message whereas the actual article loads fine.

Sorry, ReplayWeb.page won’t work in this browser as Service Workers are not supported. Please try a different browser. (Service Workers are disabled in Firefox in Private Mode. If Using Private Mode in Firefox, try regular mode)

This is less important though because I know sometimes the opposite happens, where the archive link works but the actual site doesn’t. The bigger benefit is the point above

otter,
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

Well yes, but you can do that with the link in the body as well.

Original link in the main spot means you can see the preview. Archive link in the main spot means no previews or other details

You can get the benefits of both by putting the original link in the main spot and the archive link at the very top of the body. I also think that people are more likely to engage with a post when there’s a preview image, over a little link icon

otter,
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

Now I’m curious as well. I use it often, but not for that long each time. I know it gets hot after a while and it drains the battery.

How long is it supposed to last?

otter,
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

Might be better to put the original link in the post and the archive in the body

Another benefit is that you get a nicer thumbnail
