#ShowerThoughts: Imagine political parties that were global, instead of per-country, and never had to face elections in which they're accountable to the public. Social media platforms are pretty much that.
"83% of UK citizens believe personal conversations on messaging apps such as Element, WhatsApp or Signal should have the highest level of security and privacy possible.
It’s also notable that private conversations are more important to women than men, and that the appetite for privacy increases with age."
When National says "we'll ease congestion by building more roads" they're talking about highways.
This will have ZERO EFFECT on the daily traffic congestion most people face - gridlock in towns & cities. And that's never going away UNTIL FEWER PEOPLE DRIVE.
Mind you, the Nats HAVE helpfully promised to urban kneecap public transport too. And reduce Aotearoa's already puny spend on cycling infrastructure grrrr.
@JeffHowell I am not an Aoterean resident. But I don't think reducing the human environmental footprint needs much spending, and government is all about spending.
#Pharo#smalltalk geeks. I've seen a few things lately which refer to "pharo language"
Have the Pharo people actually changed / added to the Smalltalk language, or are people just conflating the pharo environment with the language that powers it?
@masukomi I think it is the official line that Pharo is its own language, initially forked from Squeak #Smalltalk. I don't know how much it has "outgrown" Squeak, couldn't install it.
Couldn't install #CuisSmalltalk either, to see how much Squeak flab it has shed. But it sounds like the one with which to build software for/by oneself. #DrGeo is being rebuilt with it.
"We've set up a Mastodon server for the BBC to publish content in the Fediverse... Unlike most Mastodon servers where you can sign up for a personal account, we're only using this instance to host BBC accounts; it’s a place for us to publish in the Fediverse. If you have a Mastodon (or other ActivityPub) account from another server, then you can easily follow our accounts."
Note to anyone who references the #ParadoxOfTolerance. What Karl Popper said was;
"If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant..."
With the exception of a few naive teenage libertarians, nobody is advocating unlimited tolerance. We're just arguing against abandoning tolerance to the point of dehumanizing people who hold intolerant views.
So the vast majority of handwaves at the PoT are slaughtering strawmen. The obvious response being to quote Nietzsche...
@strypey out of curiosity, does your native language have a term (or terms) for tolerance?
English is an ... inadequate language (free/libre/open source software #FLOSS people know it!). Tolerance might mean different things to different people.
Personally, a native term close to tolerate I know basically means "withstand". I wouldn't make a virtue of people having to withstand too many things. With that background, tolerance (if different from withstanding) seems wholly artificial.
"Chanda Prescod-Weinstein talked about her experience on Mastodon, of being called the n-word multiple times and how vulnerable she feels because Mastodon doesn’t have a block button. She must rely on the moderators of the instance to do the right thing, giving moderators on the platform outsized power to ignore the racism she received."
@strypey I go for "intentional smear" since it is written as though they made an honest attempt to use a server but maligned the whole network in the headline.
Maybe this whole "Mastodon server" branding is the problem, setting it up for failure. With "fediverse instance" instead, a review would be clearly about specific servers.
@lispi314@natty also #Prolog, where the program state can effectively be dealt with as "just" a cache of computations that gets refreshed on every program start.
That is ignoring the gnarly bits like external state that no environment has a chance of getting right.
Also #Erlang, the other extreme where you can design for not letting the system go down at all.
"... people who cannot meet their most basic needs; that is where you want to see the growth of their incomes, and the growth of public services that serve them, right? ... That's where - if anywhere in the world - we want to see 'economic growth' ... and it's got to be distributive, so it's actually shared, and it's got to be regenerative, so it doesn't destroy the planet as it happens."
@scottmatter@strypey
I like the realism of the doughnut model. As a layperson, my apprehension is about the size of the doughnut, especially in high-demand economies.
To understand Musk's renewed obsession with X and focus on financial services, you REALLY need to understand the X/Confinity merger that became PayPal.
And, particularly, the Peter Thiel-led coup that kicked Musk out as CEO/Chief Strategist.

Unless you are from Turkey, India or China ... you know, countries that have more culture individually than the rest of the world combined ... this is just colonial blather. Twitter doesn't matter to non-colonials.
This is the sort of vandalism in the systemd style: denigrating alternatives to kill them by all means necessary. Xorg foundation is victim of a takeover here in the fediverse.
Does anyone on here know how to make a #backtracking#algorithm faster? I'm writing a #logicprogramming language ala #Prolog in Rust and it's already pretty slow (takes 1.11 seconds to find 20 answers) at even four rules deep and a database with 84 facts. Might it be string comparisons for variable names and such? If so, how would I accelerate that?
@strypey would be interested in your summary of it. Many of these solutions sound divorced from what happens on the ground, only some adjunct approaches like loomio look useful.
"If you're only prepared to make popular decisions as a leader though, then what is the point of leadership? It's not really leadership is it. It's just focus-grouping. It's just polling. Instead of laying out a platform, debating its merits, and pursuing a really distinct vision, you might as well just have a smartphone app or a website, on which everyone votes for every little policy."

There is an algorithmic alternative based on pairwise choice, which interested me. https://allourideas.org/
Threw up interesting patterns (just a few people voted)
The biggest problem of #selfhosted services and #homelab is a bus factor. What if my existence will be interrupted unexpectedly? When my #Nextcloud will crash someday after that, my family will not be able to get their files and photos anymore...
I'm thinking about an external drive with all Nextcloud data periodically copied there. To be able to disconnect it by hand from the dead server and connect to any PC. But which file system should it have? FAT32 can be read on any system but has a single file size limit. NTFS is not supported on Macs, EXT4 is not supported on both, Macs and Windows... I mean, not supported out of the box...
Bad situation. I wonder why #NTFS isn't the answer, the #Samba folks and the courts did so much.
The ingenous idea I picked up somewhere was that the #DVD filesystem, #UDF, had cross-platform support! A UDF-formatted USB stick works fine across atleast Linux and Windows. Startlingly, there is no filesystem-checker for UDF, which might be a deal-breaker. Or maybe only put checksummed archives on it or something?
Anyone out there willing to get on a voice/ video call and talk me through installing a fresh OS on a PinePhone? Sometimes over the next couple of weeks would be great.
I'm an old hand at replacing Windows with GNU/Linux on desktops and laptops, but I've never tried to install an OS on a mobile device.
@wekeys
It was a suggestion, to record and have the option of putting it up somewhere. I don't have the hardware to use it, I just wish pmOS reaches people whose usecases it fits. @strypey
Does anybody have any suggestions for an #opensource#selfhosted#kanban platform that is not based on #postgresql with a preference for #sqlite or something like that. Ideally, I want to be able to just launch one container and have it up and going. I am starting to reconsider if #Podman was really the right choice over #Docker for my #production instances, because otherwise I'd happily just be loading up #compose files. #programming#taskmanagement#trello
@CommanderViral nowadays, I just see if whatever use-case can be accomplished somehow in #TiddlyWiki. An actual multi-column layout may be non-trivial, though.
@birnim as an Emacs guy, I know what you are saying (org-mode at my day-job). Just that the ubiquitous webview is a tempting target, and projects like Tiddlywiki and Delta Chat (and #Tauri) are delivering so much out of that + WebDAV/e-mail.
