I always thought that sign meant "No stopping". But apparently in Luxembourg it means "I'm having a drink at Panama and don't want to walk so I will totally park here and annoy anyone who wants a Veloh". 4 cars...

Eating is a multi-sensory experience, and the design surrounding food – from restaurant interiors to menu typefaces – can have a tangible impact on that. But with gentrification tearing out eateries with an ounce of individuality, is this distinctive visual experience now being forfeited?

I love patterns, they can bring some consistency and fun to designs.
Here are 3 resources to can generate, copy paste and use SVG patterns and shapes:

  • Vector Pattern Generator, a tool that lets you customize patterns that you can then copy paste as SVG or CSS code https://www.visiwig.com/patterns/
  • Pattern generator by Super designer: a fun tool to create geometric patterns based on 4 different tiles selection https://superdesigner.co/tools/patterns
  • SVG Shape Generator, another cool and fun SVG blob and shape genera

Another episode in the life of having a é in my name, when people don't accept "non English letters" whatever that means?. Would you tell Beyoncé she can't use her name on your site?

I got a whole talk on the topic, by the way: https://stephaniewalter.design/blog/hello-my-name-is-stephanie-talk-encoding-special-characters-issues-poor-user-experience/

It's 2024, this is a new social media, so no "old data base legacy" kind of issue. At some point, people building sites, you need to understand that English isn't the only language in the world, the world, and people's names go beyond what you so nicely call "English letters".

AI headphones let wearer listen to a single person in a crowd, by looking at them just once.
This is amazing, the impact for people with earring challenges who want to amplify the voice of the person they want to hear, for example, would be huge. I can also imagine this getting used by also neurodivergent folks who have issues concentrating when there’s background noise, and want to be able to focus on the conversation with one person.

Visual design rules you can safely follow every time.
What I love about them: I tend to do all of this naturally, because, years of experience, and a trained designer eye and often my explanation to people is something around “it feels better like that”. So, it’s nice to have explanations from Anthony Hobday for a couple of those.

Accessibility in Design Systems: A Comprehensive Approach Through Documentation and Assets.
Pinterest worked a lot to build an accessible design system: accessible components, but also guidance and training, a component accessibility scorecard, inclusive language, some design checklists and accessibility annotations from designers. Yeah, it takes a village, but it’s worth it!

I agree with Dan Mall here: if you want something from me, if you make me guess what it is, there’s a higher chance I will say no, just, because we all have tones of things to think about. Make it easier for people to say yes to you, by asking direct questions, and being very specific.

I am all set for the 1/4 session of my Accessibility for Designers workshop tonight with Smashing Magazine:

  • Slides: checked
  • Figma exercises: warm
  • Checklists & Resources: up to date
  • Self Assessment map: ready

I really like this workshop because I get some theory but also a lot of practical exercises for checking and fixing accessibility issues in mockups earlier in the process. And documenting accessibility for developers.
And people always have such interesting questions!

@isotopp "I'm sending my AI digital clone" is the new "tentative answer", a polite way to say "I can't tell you your meeting is useless directly, so here's my passive way of doing so"?

One of the new things coming to the webplatform I'm super happy about is :user-valid and :user-invalid. We have :valid and :invalid but those were triggered while user was typing. Rather useless if you as me. The new ones will only get triggered after a user has significantly interacted with the input. This is going to be nice for form validation.
