“Renewables will be world’s top electricity source within three years, IEA data reveals”, from https://www.carbonbrief.org/renewables-will-be-worlds-top-electricity-source-within-three-years-iea-data-reveals/

Is anybody with #energy / #renewables / #energytransition knowledge able to explain the details here? How do we get to majority renewables in three years when our electricity production mix currently looks like this: https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/electricity-prod-source-stacked

Very happy if that happens, just seems like a stretch.

steadystatemcr,

@Brendanjones @bartvdpoel
So there are 2 problems.

  1. As the article makes clear, renewables growth will cover demand growth. But that means renewables are still additional generation only, not fossil fuel replacement, and that's in the 'easy' electricity sector.
  2. Just what these 'renewables' are isn't clear (maybe in the IEA report) but they will include problematic types including logging for biomassand possibly large scale hydro.
    Yes, the only way is down.

Two things together.
∆ Realisation that 2 degrees, even 1.5 degrees, is far from safe.
∆ Realisation that #climate impacts are happening faster than anticipated.
What a juxtaposition.
An emergency requires an emergency brake.
It's called #degrowth.
