Knitting up the ends of balls of sock yarn and I’ve had to change mid-sock. Thing is, I think I’ve mixed Regia sock yarn with possibly a cotton of unknown origin. I don’t have the bands any more to check, but will it ruin the sock durability or washing wise?

The plan to de-connect my digital life is going well so far.

Baby steps - but I replaced the smart speaker with a solar/wind-up radio, and a mechanical timer back at the end of May, and it’s been totally workable for the past two months.

I’ve set up a non google email and am slowly migrating. I’ve downloaded and deleted everything from my Drive.

I’ve also sandboxed my uni stuff as Microsoft want to be everywhere… so annoying but I have to use it so hey.

What next? (Yes I am inviting advice)

I don’t know about you but I love paint archaeology - there’s probably a proper term for it - these are bollards outside some shops, and you can see the corporate colours of all those that passed through.

I mentioned to my PhD chat group buddies that it’d be lovely to see them on Mastodon, and some have agreed to give it a go.

So I’m asking for help. In advance of them arriving, I’d love to be able to point them at this post and replies to find their connections. Are you doing a #phd too? What’s it about? Have you just finished one and have some advice?

Help! I need an archaeologist to explain briefly to kiddos how you make sure not to harm the stuff you’re digging up. (Prerecorded snippet vid anytime, or an interactive call at 12.15-13.00 GMT on 8th July). It’s for a kids track of an adult’s conference where we try to educate them about cool stuff.

I saw a newspaper headline with the word “wazzock” being used to describe a certain lying ex prime minister. Didn’t know people still used that word but it made me feel a bit nostalgic. It’s such a great insult.

I passed my laser exams with 93% and this makes me happy. I still don’t actually own my own lasers but at least I theoretically know what I’m doing and have a certificate to prove it.

Recently I have set up #birdnetpi. With a microphone on a #raspberrypi, it permanently tracks the bird calls outside. This is such a great project!

Had to integrate this into my #grafana dashboard right away, of course.

I bought a simple solar powered / hand cranked radio (yes I could build one, no I have no time) and a clockwork egg timer to replace my mains-powered “smart” speaker. The radio has enough power stored up for a decent evening mooching about making dinner/cleaning the kitchen. The egg timer replaces me telling the speaker to set a timer.

Weird that we thought technology would make stuff easier, but actually going back to the simple devices is less of a privacy nightmare and more eco friendly.
