Quote from article: In today’s world, Sullivan said, trade policy is not just about the tariff deals that business leaders have criticized the administration for neglecting. It is about a larger economic strategy both at home and abroad to build economies that offer rising standards of living for working people.

The administration is now focusing on labor rights, climate change, and banking security in this larger picture. Through organizations like the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment the administration hopes to mobilize hundreds of billions of dollars in financing in the next seven years to build infrastructure in low- and middle-income countries and to relieve debt there.

Quote from article: In the wake of the multiple electoral failures Trump has led the GOP into, including the 2018 and 2022 midterms, as well as Trump’s own unsuccessful reelection campaign, the proposition that a majority of American voters desire a president whose goal is to destroy the nation’s democratic institutions simply does not hold water. Furthermore, as Greg Sargent has observed, there are numerous indications that the power of the GOP’s insurrectionist wing, while it remains a grave threat to the nation, is actually waning.

Yet the press seemed taken by DeSantis’s carefully staged events touting authoritarian initiatives, from which critical reporters were often excluded — and during which DeSantis’s supporters were filed in to cheer — apparently believing the hyped claims that these photo ops reflected a groundswell for his nascent candidacy.

Quote from article: What does his notion of freedom mean? “To fight for our democracy…To protect our rights. To make sure that everyone in this country is treated equally—and that everyone is given a fair shot at making it.” And the opposition? “Around the country, MAGA extremists are lining up to take on those bedrock freedoms.”

The contrast in values was made visible in part on Wednesday when House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and House Republicans squeaked through a debt limit bill 217-215, even though Biden already insisted he would not negotiate over spending cuts to extend the debt ceiling. That didn’t stop passage of a bill that would cut energy tax credits and spending programs that seek to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support electric vehicles, clean electricity and fuel, while expanding mining and fossil fuel production.

A friend asked this on her #author page, and I thought I’d steal the idea. Do you collect anything besides books?

For me, it’s Loungefly bags, Disney cats, Disney pins, and model horses.

How about you?

Quote from article: Republicans started using the so-called “debt ceiling” — based on a law passed back in 1917 — as a cudgel to beat up Democratic presidents in 1995 during the Clinton administration. It was one of Newt’s “bright ideas.”

Clinton and Obama went along with the GOP, but now their demands have become so extreme that President Biden is threatening a veto (if the bill even gets through the Senate, which it probably won’t).

My thoughts: I was still a Federal employee during the 1995 government shutdown that resulted from this brinksmanship. I was "mission-critical," so I had to show up every day. The people who paid me? They were furloughed. I was at work not knowing whether I'd ever see my paycheck for those days. This political posturing has real-world consequences that the uber-rich GOTeabircher reps couldn't care less about.

Yeah, the Mouse's lawyers don't play.

In the dark recesses of time, I was deputy public affairs officer for a military medical center. One of the nurses was an artist, and he painted some Disney characters on the wall in the Pediatric unit.

This was long before social media, and to this day I don't know how Disney found out -- but the hospital received a C&D and we had to paint over the mural or face legal action.

I finished another book for the #DisabilityReadathon

"Otherbound" by Corinne Duyvis - I'll write a review at some point. Fits the prompt to read something from my library - I used the Libby Library app.

I need some ideas for the last book which is for the prompt to read a translation. So something that wasn't originally in English.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I'm not being flippant, I promise: Victor Hugo's "Hunchback of Notre Dame." It's about disability, and prejudice ... and it's an incredibly rich and satisfying read.

I used to be an avid Royal watcher, staying up late for weddings, etc. The whole shebang.

I honestly find Charles and Camilla so imminently unlikable together that I can't muster up any enthusiasm for the coronation.

I admit that, in no small part, it's because of how Diana was treated. I'm greatly disturbed that Camilla is going to be queen. 😞

It seems like the new default price for newly released #ebooks is $16.99 (CAD), although sometimes it's higher, of course. Just a year ago it was usually more like $14.99, which I already found expensive, and I remember noping out on $17.99 offerings.

Publishers do know this just pushes more people to libraries, right? I guess this is why they try so hard to limit library lending.

Grr.

Indie authors tend to price lower ... but we also lack the promotion juggernaut that mainstream publishers have at their disposal.

I use the library quite often for just the reason you describe. Not being made of money, I borrow many new releases.

A quick history lesson. From 1940-1980:
•Wealthiest paid 70-94% marginal tax
•0 of them went broke from taxation
•0 of them left USA
•All remained exceedingly wealthy
•Manufacturing boomed
•The middle class was 62% of US economy (It's now 40% post 'trickle down scamenomics)
•We had the strongest middle class growth in US History

Let's do that again. Stop protecting billionaires. Start taxing them.

sharonecathcart,
@sharonecathcart@sfba.social avatar

@QasimRashid

In Peter Guralnick's extensive biography of Elvis Presley, he recounted the story of a reporter who asked Elvis how he felt about having to pay 90% taxes on his income above whatever the threshold was at the time.

Elvis said, "I just write the check and send it off. Those taxes help people in need."

Too bad more people don't understand the concept of noblesse oblige the same way a rock star who grew up poor in Tupelo did.

I just wish things were better. And I wish that "the left" gave enough of a crap to try to help trans people. But as The American Prospects's pro-Tucker Carlson piece demonstrates, there are a whole lot of "leftists" and "progressives" who don't give a single shit about trans people's rights.

sharonecathcart,
@sharonecathcart@sfba.social avatar

@parkermolloy

It pisses me off (and I'm a middle-aged cishet woman).

People tend to disregard things that are, for them personally, "minor inconveniences."

For example: "Well, it doesn't affect me that these right-wingers are trying to prevent trans kids from socially transitioning. Why don't we just let them wait until they're adults."

Then, they're conditioned to accept the bigger inconveniences ... which eventually lead to atrocities.

Then, they're shocked -- shocked, do you hear me -- when it's suddenly their rights in the crosshairs.

It's why I never give up fighting for the rights of people who aren't me. And I don't think I'm special for it; I just think I'm doing what any decent person should do. 😕

Quote from article: I’m proposing Congress change the rules of how the Court operates around decisions in which they invoke the Constitution to change or strike down laws. Instead of operating along partisan majority lines, I’m suggesting they must have an absolute consensus — a unanimous decision — on any decisions involving the US Constitution.

The Supreme Courts of Belgium, France, and Italy work this way by law and those of Germany and Spain do so by tradition. It has served those nations well, stripping politics and partisanship out of their judicial systems.

@JKLund

Only nominally. IANAL ... but what that really was, was the SCOTUS making it legal to bribe politicians by framing money as speech. It's the same bullshit that led to corporate personhood.

sharonecathcart,
@sharonecathcart@sfba.social avatar

@JKLund

First, it wasn't my suggestion. If you go back, you'll see that I quoted the article to which I linked.

Second, you'll see that the author was very specific that this had to do with changing laws or striking them down.

The idea would be that striking down a law should require unanimous support if the reasoning is based on the Constitution.

Thank you for the opportunity to clarify.
