I wonder if there are any #guix maintainers willing to take a look at https://debbugs.gnu.org/cgi/bugreport.cgi?bug=70112 . I tried asking in #guix room few times, not much luck. There are already new versions available, and I would prefer not to rebase it (again), testing it is quite annoying due to differences between podman 4 and 5...

@graywolf I'll check

This is an year of rejects :D I got an official reject for turkey residence permit today.

P.S. I already have tickets to Georgia, and we plan a guix meetup in Tbilisi's hackerspace soon.

@abcdw now way to appeal?

Bug tracker for RDE.

RDE is already quite big project with a few subprojects and it's hard to track feature requests, reports, milestones, their dependencies and to collocate and organize them properly and share publicly.

That's why for last few weeks I was looking at different project management/bug tracking solutions.

From what I found so far it seems that Bugzilla is the best option at the moment.

Thoughts?

Who uses #guix in any type of research related to #astronomy #astrophysics, please share your wishlist of missing software.

I am working on scheduled update 2024-03 for (gnu guix astronomy), most of it is #python #astropy #jwst related packages.

It would be nice to have https://yt-project.org/

> ... supports structured, variable-resolution meshes, unstructured meshes, and discrete or sampled data such as particles. ...

The package is ready and I might include it in the upcoming update.

@astro_jcm I wonder how much digital astronomy is reproducible nowadays? Bioinformatics benefits by implementing pipelines on with .
and are available as reproducible Guix packages.

OK, https://github.com/astral-sh/uv is very cool: a fast replacement for Python's pip written in Rust by the same folks who built ruff.

@sharlatan@mastodon.social avatar

@gvwilson @rain Even with #rust in core #python applications nowadays I found #guix may bring some positive reproducible environment and deployment experience in software distribution, especially in science.

I keep seeing articles and comments about #GUIX as an alternative to #NixOS but there is no way you'll ever catch me using a #Lisp language for system configuration

Give me #Nix or give me death!

sharlatan,

@LGUG2Z I'm scared of the nix configuration language :-)

Generated 69 guix package definitions from mix.lock. Spend the whole day (more than 10 hours) to make them successfully build.

I just listened to

Developer Voices: How Lisp is designing Nanotechnology (with Prof. Christian Schafmeister)

Episode webpage: http://www.developervoices.com

I love the concept of choosing common lisp as a "forever language" because things like Python change too fast and code rots.

sharlatan,
@sharlatan@mastodon.social avatar

@alanz It would be great to port all the #quicklisp packages collection to #guix! I lost myself in the packaging Trial (#Kandria 's game engine and #pgloader a few years ago.

I started to collect a "Guix in Production" list:

Do you know any other occurences?

Anyone here with experience hosting services to the public Internet from inside of guix system container?

It occurred to me that this might be an easier way to deploy services with Guix on cloud providers where it's easier to install Guix on a distro like Debian or Alpine.

@daviwil I might need this for recently accepted #NSQ package, but it missed service.

@DemocracySpot @AT1ST @valen1 Hyperspeed trains (400-500km/h) like in China, Japan, Singapore, Korea - solved that case better than motorways with average speed of 100km/h

I'm not enjoying the latest Peter Frankopan book as much as I enjoyed his book The Silk Roads.

I've been listening to the audiobook, but it's not clicking with me. The content is very dry and has lots of listy info in the early chapters. I have the hardback as well. I think I'll ditch the audiobook and read the paper copy in the future.

sharlatan,
@sharlatan@mastodon.social avatar

@ianRobinson I started slow reading #theearthtransformed. It feels like a very deep reference book with more than 300+ bibliographical sources. I doubt that the author brings anything new on that subject which he is not specialized in.

Let's see how many notes I'll collect to my #orgroam #zettelkasten knowledge base.
