robey,
@robey@messydesk.social avatar

@dpp wait... they just... stole the name? it's not related at all?

they just liked dark matter's name, and took it???

i'm going to be sitting for a few days with this info, that cops are so ineffective at property crime that they don't even recognize a common bike lock when they see one

I'm sort of interested in "Civil War", but I'm a lot more interested in the idea of nonviolent revolution in the USA; that is, a discontinuous change in the rules of government based on popular demonstrations.

@evan as you probably know, this actually happened in the 1910s! i've been fascinated with that idea lately

robey,

@rit i thought that project was canceled......

robey,
@robey@messydesk.social avatar

@rit google fiber... is ... is it back? ... i dare not dream.

we gave up a long long time ago and went with sonic-via-at&t. i heard google got bored & distracted before even 1 shovel hit the ground

robey,
@robey@messydesk.social avatar

@rit niiiice!

robey,
@robey@messydesk.social avatar

@rit we're on sonic's equivalent (in SJ) which is $95 so yeah that's a good deal...

hilariously, they declare $10 of it to be a "voice line" because the deal requires pretending to want voice too. i assume that's at&t's doing.

@robey@messydesk.social avatar

what do we call this? the "atari fallacy"?

once the board installs a bean-counter CEO, firing creative workers (R&D) makes number go up! short-term savings traded for long-term viability.

then it's a vicious cycle, on the inevitable slide to death: each round of layoffs/flight keeps the company in the black by shedding potential future growth.

eventually you're left with the "neutron star": no workers, just a core group of lawyers & execs who manage a dwindling business as patent trolls.

a lot of my interactions with the rust compiler go like this:

rustc: "i'm mad about A!"

me: [changes A to B]

rustc: "now I'm mad about this whole expression! you need to add a dereference or maybe remove one!"

me: [adds dereference]

rustc: "now I'm mad about B!"

me: [changes B back to the original A]

rustc: "all good 🥰 "

i'm sure mastodon needs more money and coding to meet some of their goals, but i'd rather see people fund and support some of the other social-web servers and clients so we don't end up with a monoculture just as bad as the one we escaped.

nothing against mastodon and i wish them well. let's just make sure there are several viable options in 2024!

evan, (edited ) to random
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

So, here's a problem I have with Mastodon: let's say I make a post and someone replies with a racist, sexist, homophobic or transphobic comment. I can block the commenter, but that only hides it for me. Other people who come to my page will see the comment, and believe that I tacitly condone that behaviour. I'd like to be able to delete the reply from my replies list entirely. Or at least hide replies from blocked accounts. And, yes, I know that wouldn't delete it from the originating server.

robey,
@robey@messydesk.social avatar

@evan yeah, imho jwz had the right idea: replies to a post should be a timeline/collection, curated by the author, hosted with the the post...

"inReplyTo" already allows thread-chaining for clients that want to assemble a thread view, AP already has excellent timeline/collection support, all it needs is a field on the post (like "replyCollection"?) to indicate the id of this collection.

this could be a short FEP. i'd just want to try implementing it in my server first to make sure it'd work.

i'm afraid i still can't get over blowhards saying "supply chain security" when they really mean "we built a capitalist enterprise on top of a pile of donated work from idealistic hackers, and now we're mad that they didn't have the same goals and process as our paid employees."

literally fuck off with that. people writing code for their friends is not your "supply chain", it's just an extremely bad business model for lazy people.

“i/o - Bright-Side Mix” by Peter Gabriel is my favorite new song of December 2023.

> So we think we really live apart
> Because we got two legs, a brain, and a heart
> We all belong to everything
> To the octopus’s suckers and the buzzard’s wing
> To the elephant’s trunk and buzzing bee’s sting
> Stuff coming out, stuff going in
> I’m just a part of everything

Narrator: ...and as you can see power is shown as kW/h.

Me (focus intensifies): kilowatts.... per hour.... as in.... kiloJoules per second per hour.

Nope. Woulda spent money here, but THAT SHIT WILL NOT STAND.

robey,
@robey@messydesk.social avatar

@saramg hahaha like ... the acceleration of the energy? the velocity of the power??

(i still have a pet peeve about "mA-hour" but at least that's still directly translatable to real life...)

robey, to random
@robey@messydesk.social avatar

i really disagree with the terminology that in a register dependency graph (like SSA), register definitions "dominate" each other. i don't think of registers as barbaric or sexual.

if register r1 depends on r2, then r2's definition supports r1. it's a support network. no registers need to be dominated today.

robey,
@robey@messydesk.social avatar

@dpp how does that terminology work? A depends on B, so B predicates A? i'm not sure that's as clear tbh... but i've only "predicate" used as a jargon term for "yes/no question in lisp"

robey,
@robey@messydesk.social avatar

@dpp yeah i think it may just be too jargony to remember which direction it means... i want something you understand the first time you read it, without going either "ew!" or "i wonder what that word means here"
