I was teaching all day but my husband has been having some crazy adventure. Our friend had his motorcycle stolen, tracked it with an airtag to a sidewalk on one of the bridges in the Bronx where it was not moving. He called my husband to meet him on the bridge and rode on his other bike there. They recovered the cycle and motorcycled away!

Crime averted! (We think it was a joyride or the thieves got spooked about being tracked and ditched the bike. )

Crazy stuff!

@futurebird It's better they found it than the police. I had a motor scooter stolen from outside a club about {mumbles] years ago that the police recovered. They wanted more to get it out of impound than it was worth. They said I could sue in small claims to recover the impound fee. I told them to keep it and signed the pink slip over to the PD.

It's really weird, the Bsky > Mastodon bridge posts only show up in BlueSky in the app. That might be why I never noticed it working, I'm usually on my laptop.

One of the best things about
#Ingress is finding local places that you never even knew existed. Thankfully the worst part, players from the other team harassing you via messages, doesn't seem to be a problem around here anymore.

@Da_Gut @peteramthor The thing that sucks for Ingress is there are only two modes to play it: totally casual whenever you think about pulling your phone out, and GO HARD by driving around the county aimlessly for like 10 hours a day. There is no inbetween.

Welp, I knew Microsoft's CoPilot+ Recall was going to be a privacy disaster but I didn't expect it to turn into an enterprise computing catastrophe for Microsoft quite this fast!

But this can't be a one-off. Any large enterprise that has to comply with a regulated privacy environment—HIPAA in the USA, GDPR in the EU, banking/insurance/finance globally—must be considering a ban on Microsoft installations on laptop/desktop computers right now or be breaking the law.

@cstross The silver lining is that Recall is only on Surfaces with "NPUs". It's not all Windows 11 or all Microsoft laptops (yet). But still as much backlash as possible is needed, the concept of Recall needs to be burned out before it spreads. Myself I bounced from considering buying a Surface to looking at ThinkPad Yoga.

@cstross @b4ux1t3 At least from people just using Win11 out of the box with no additional protections or precautions. Yes, that's the vast majority of users which is depressing. When I was working in computer hardware we would connect an unpatched, unprotected fresh install of WinXP to the Internet just to see how fast it attracted nastiness. It didn't take long.

@Tim_Eagon @darjr And to whit, the skills they are looking for for this position are for digital platforms (specifically video games) and would not be useful for like generating print art or text for a tabletop game. There's not a lot of crossover there. And if I were an AIML engineer and hired to work on video games and they came along and said, "Hey, we need you to work AI text generation", I'd quit or start looking for a new job.
