As is tradition I've finished a tv show and now I'm going to dig for all the trivia. Tonight's show is Ahsoka season 1. The rest of this will be unlisted because who wants random trivia in their feed.

Finished a port of a complex side project from to and I’m honestly quite happy.

  • Layouts are great, I had two failed ports to nextjs app directory. I’m not in love with remix’s route api but it works! I don’t have strange edge cases and there’s a js api escape hatch
  • loaders and actions are wonderful, I got rid of a whole ass api server. Having an actual request and response to work with is a breath of fresh air

I'm having issues with NextJS 13 on my blog so I decided to have a real look at Remix. So far so good, it's got a real interesting approach to data fetching which seems interesting. I have a strong aversion to anything owned by Shopify but this is a low risk area to play around in.

I have a lot invested in react already but more and more of my applications become "just javascript" so It's fun to port them around.

I’m proud to tell you that I’ve joined the GitHub Actions Mac Cloud Infrastructure team. (That’s a mouthful!)

GitHub actions is one of my favorite products and it’s been majorly influential in how I (and probably you) build software. I’m quite excited to be a part of it.

My infrastructure team builds the data centers that build your apps. Which is no easy task!

Everyone’s really nice so far and I get to help us grow which is always a lot of fun. 🤩

Are there any maker/electronics instances?

Pushpin decomposes real time web technologies (like into a request/response backend which works really well for and honestly most application stacks. Long lived connections are hard to manage near your app logic.

The GRIP protocol is straightforward and lower level than you'd expect.

Good read so far.

@thisismissem I started watching blacklist from the beginning because it's been years and the "CALL A MEDIC AND MAKE SURE THEY"RE HERE NOW" is like every episode, they just like to beat up the blond guy and then have him yell a lot. To be fair he's good at that.

I wonder how much I've given up by not using a tiling window manager 🤔

What’s a right of passage for a new owner?

In 2023 the state of the api in browsers is silly af, you can't set headers on the initial connection but you can kind of set one so of course it's abused.

K8s is basically using the subprotocol header to smuggle auth tokens and I love it.

https://github.com/whatwg/websockets/issues/16#issuecomment-1705316320

Of course people say "just send auth in a web socket frame" ignoring the prior art of everything else being request/response including preexisting auth solutions.

Most people seem to embed auth tokens in a path param.

Are there any other kid appropriate movies that are high quality along the lines of My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki’s delivery service?

My kid chose Madagascar which is fine but definitely not cosy, kind or tellable as a bedtime story.

So I have a programming question that I think I just don’t know enough patterns to answer.

In any app of any size, I find I need to eventually introduce dependency injection, so all my business logic functions take their normal arguments and the “orm” and configuration they might have gotten from env vars. I often have an app context object that’s created and passed around (in full or part) this lets me set it up with ENV vars in prod/dev and do whatever crazy shit I need for development

@jerry do you talk publicly about how much the servers and infra cost for infosec.exchange? it's a great example of mastodon at scale.

Am I right I’m assuming that these constant tech #layoffs are;

  • new; I don’t remember two happening in a year and now it’s every week
  • cash grabs; as a way to bump the stock
  • anti union; this summer it seemed like organized tech labor was an inevitable thing and now everyone seems really conservative and fearful

It feels like oligarchs throwing their weight around reminding us who’s boss.

I had a long conversation with @requiem and he helped me be OK with admitting this to myself and others.

I think #POSIX sucks and we could do better if we moved on from it.

Big thanks to @jcorbin for walking me through a ton of finer points of I've made my first model!

It's a little late for indie bookstore day but these are bookmarks for my local bookstore.

I'm testing a print in the only color PETG I've got, and will try a 2 color PLA in the morning. I think the inset one would look really good with the letters (and bottom of the bookmark) in black with a white top. 🤔

And if you're every nearby https://www.womrathbooks.com/ !

A sliced GCODE version of both bookmarks. I'm printing them in PETG at 1mm depth. We'll see how it goes :fingers crossed:
A photo of my printer starting it's print. Just some blue outlines for now.

I’m listening to an interview with the creator of https://roadmap.sh He’s pitching education as a way to get a job, less fundamentals and more practical knowledge. My gut says this is a path to mediocrity. However, I think it’s actually a direct response to crushing economic pressures.

Oh, I want to say this way of thinking is incredibly harmful. However, he’s responding to people who need to be lifted out of poverty now.

What We Do in the Shadows is just fantastic television. It's so dumb and absurd but the actors just sell it so well. Natasia Demetriou is probably my favorite, they give her a ton of episodes in s3 and s4 and she does wonderful with them.

I read a #scifi #book about an ice hauler that gets suddenly sent out of the solar system at relativistic speeds on the back of something that apparently isn't a comet, it starts as a survival story and then turns really interesting and weird.

Do any of you know what I might be talking about?
