Huh. I discuss electric vehicles with people quite a bit, and a lot of them would like to avoid Tesla for many reasons (build quality, El*n) but it's so hard to get away from the goodness of the amazing charging network.

And now that's gone. Seems like a poor decision. Oh well.

@TomF I hope it pushes the major providers in my area to start building out again, they'd put expansion on pause because tesla was planning on building a bunch out here and we ended up in a situation where there's not nearly enough chargers for all the EVs on the road driving long distances, and pretty much outside of the chargepoint and zef stations everything is level 2. (then on top of that shell bought one of the major providers here than shut down ALL their stations...)

@lumi @CStamp it's pretty hit and miss, some are pretty good, some are clearly made by someone who hasn't tasted cheese in 40 years. The texture is the harder part though (from the description sounds like these guys nailed it for the few they make so far) , there's some really good swiss/cheddar alternatives now that are great on a cold sandwich but don't melt well (tend to separate). I've had a few that melt decently but yet to have a good mozzarella alternative

Been in and out of data centers all day. Primary and auxiliary cooling both failed in one and clocked in at 116F this morning 😩.

@vwbusguy @Mirppc my current system doesn't even start to derate until 99C, though honestly if it ever got that high I would probably be terrified. I did solid wire management and have a great cooling system though so it's sitting at a brisk 23C right now :D

@pxlplz afaik everything under the sun opens all but the most recent Ps versions PSD files pretty much perfectly, adobe is pretty known to break things in point releases though so likely people saving from the newest version on the sub model are the issue.

I've been playing the planet crafter game and it's a lot of fun, but...

  1. I think I am nearing the end and I'm sad. I wish there were more planets (like, campaigns) but I'm glad it isn't procedural.

  2. the lighting calculations are a bit fubar. That could be a lot better and it'd make the game prettier, but I don't know that it would make it much funner 😂

@demofox I enjoyed it but honesetly found the endgame kinda a drag compared to the rest, especially the insects stage where it's hard to speed it up until almost the end due to the rocket for it not unlocking until extremely late.

I also REALLY wish the logistics and genetic recombination to make your own creatures wasn't locked like...15+ hours into the game, they were the best parts and they were only RIGHT at the end :/

@demofox I hope if they do they make a much larger area with more of the exploration and have the logistics start early game, you'd need a crowbar to pry me away from a satisfactory/factorio like game with a more solid goal and exploration.

@nixCraft I'm not so sure I'd call it bad behavior, as far as I can tell their bot respects robots.txt and looking at the one for the LM forums they don't have any crawl delay set or any restrictions on indexing so any new large crawler that finds the site for the first time would likely have the same effect, as anything indexing the site that hasn't before will just continue branching without any delay, google will nuke you like this too if you put a big dataset up and they index it w/o delay

@lashman if you're on pc and haven't patched yet, don't, it's extremely broken right now, even worse than it used to be (I mean, it is a bethesda game). It's trying to "cap" fps at 60 for the consoles (even though we're not on console) and it's having some weird interactions and most people are stuck at 20 or 48fps now with no fix, it's also causing load times spiking over 20-30 seconds when transitioning areas, and much lower LOD..basically they pushed an untested console version to PC...

@musicvsartstuff I honestly really want a master system, mostly for phantasy star (I absolutely love the original 4 games) but there's a CRAZY number of games I never even knew about (mostly because they're all PAL/euro only). I'd imagine to play all the PAL games properly though I'd have to set it up on some isolated power to run at 50hz.

@Carnivius @musicvsartstuff there's no emulator on the market that gets the graphics right! especially when you get into the 8 bit era square pixel representations look VASTLY different than the original artwork as it would have been traced on a CRT, for instance blended colors show as individual solid pixels on emulation/LCD. I've tried every hardware/software upscaler I could find and all the ones that LOOK correct add tons of input lag..making the games feel bad :/

@musicvsartstuff I played the gamegear sonic games growing up (which were just ports of the master system versions, so I do love those!). I grew up on the NES (sms was basically never a thing in the US) then the Genesis myself so definitely a sega fanboy for most of my childhood.

The first 4 phantasy star games are amazing though, the first is master system only and has some SMT vibes with the dungeons, the other 3 (which I have) are all gen (4s on my list of best games off all time).

@Carnivius @musicvsartstuff it looks like that shader is mostly just emulating the scanlines & dot pitch but not actually the blending (it still looks chunky/pixelated) especially in SOTN, on an actual CRT you wouldn't be able to see those white lines on the bricks or the highlight pixels on alucard, they would cause blending with nearby phospors creating the illusion of a corner + smooth surface. It's hard to describe just how much worse emulation looks if you know what it COULD look like :/

@Carnivius @musicvsartstuff there ARE shaders that get it right, but i've yet to see one actually implemented in an emulator and the hardware implementations look pretty good, but add like 2-3 frames delay :/

When people argue about the best 2D Mario it's usually a close call between Super Mario 3 (SM3) and Super Mario World (SMW), with SMW typically winning. At least to my experience.

And, look, I get it. SMW is amazing and there's no point to argue about why something should NOT be your favorite thing.

But for me it'll always be SM3. The amount of variety in the levels, with each world having a distinct theme is something that SMW doesn't come close. Same goes for powerups.

@afreytes @memoriesin8bit honestly NA mario 2 is a pretty damned good game, no shame in loving it.

Zelda 2 is awesome too, it's my second favorite (and that's only because links awakening is so goddamaned good), I own both the fds and NES versions and play the shit out of the randomizer :D I know it's divisive because it's "different" but there WAS no "zelda formula" at the time it came out, it also has some of the best sidescroller combat mechanics on the NES.

Today is one of these "ok, damn, AI totally isn't there yet" days.

I found an output that 4 cannot write, it will always trip it up and cause it to repeat itself.

It is also unable to follow instructions telling it to avoid this problem.

@jupiter your example works fine in all the models I've tried it on, might be something specific to the API tool you're using for the prompts? (I know some, like the stable diffusion ones, have special handling for JSON style parameters)

@jupiter I generally use the CodeLlama model as it's been specially trained for source code in different languages.

Anyone know an easy way to show a full screen image in windows 95?
I thought I could use mspaint but it turns out it adds a 1px border in full-screen mode.

I could write a simple win32 app but that seems like a lot of work for something this simple

@kosta @atomicpoet it's actually way, WAY more common if a steam game doesn't work without steam for it to not actually be a DRM issue but the way the dev integrated steamworks not having any sort of backup codepath for if steam isn't running. Thankfully it's pretty easy and well supported to work around that, valve documents exactly how, and there's existing drop-ins.

I've been playing lately, and they just announced a new update that mentions you can buy a new ship to play in the game, soon, rather than wait for it to be generally available later. That hints that they'll shift to charging money directly for ships to play.

That bothers me a little. What bothers me more is fans announcing how happy they are to pay more money to continue playing the game.

Why be a cheerleader for enshittification?

@foolishowl man, I already have issues with how they turned the grind up intensely to basically force you to buy the new expansion if you didn't want it to be a second day job to just upgrade enough to fight basic pirates (It completely killed combat in the game for me :/), but going full star citizen on it is unacceptable (I know it was probably tempting them the whole time watching star citizen rake in 100x their profits with 1% of the work..but i hoped they were better than that...)

@Moosader even ultima 7 is kinda a pain to go back to, it's interface and graphics aged nowhere near as well as ultima 8's
